China Southern Takes Delivery Of First 77W

Wed Feb 26, 2014 3:58 am

CZ took delivery of it's first 777-300ER, Tuesday at Boeing's facility in Everett.

The 77W will be deployed on CAN-JFK beginning on August 6, 2014

The first class cabin consists of 4 open suites. Each features 82 inches of pitch in a 1-2-1 configuration. Business class, also in a 1-2-1 configuration, features 34 seats. Economy features 227 standard slimline seats in a 3-3-3 set-up. Premium economy features 44 seats .

Congrats to China Southern on a beautiful aircraft!

I'm not sure if I am the only one thinking this but it looks dated already.

Certainly plain in many ways, and the First class looks anything but premium in its design.

haha.. so true

With the way that economy class is going, it is amazing that they haven't gone 10 abreast, especially as they have a Y+ cabin.

Love the dark Purple of first class suite and the carpet. But feeling a bit TG.
Dated? From these photos perhaps.

3-3-3 love it, 3-4-3 is just painful.

Chinese carriers are so rich, new 777-300ER, 787s, 330s every two weeks, not to mention numerous A320s and B737s.
Congratulation!!!
Let's just blame it on yields.

The First Class seat (or suite) is similar to Lufthansa and the J class is similar to SWISS. How can that be dated ?

I think he is talking about the colors chosen...and in a way I must agree. I know that its the same colors as in there livery but I personally find the colors very dull and they make me just want to sleep.

I am no expert in long-haul premium cabins, but I don't think it looks like an old or bad product. It actually looks nice. I think the choice of colors is perhaps what makes the F suites look un-premium and a TG-copycat, and what makes the J seats look somewhat sterile.
Upcoming flights:
May: AM MEX-CUN 73H (Y), AM CUN-MEX 73W (Y).
August: KL MEX-AMS 74M (J), KQ AMS-NBO 788 (J).

What do you want the colors to make you feel then, alive and awake for a 12+ hour flight? I would rather get some nice sleep!

I would enjoy some more natural colors like the ones you see on LH or LX.

The color scheme is somewhat reminiscent of FlyDubai's, although CI's has greater emphasis on the blue.

The contrast in the colour scheme of their interior is a bit too harsh for my eyes; it screams 'plastic fantastic'. I have to give it to them that they truly incorporated the colours of their brand, but it looks very sterile to me. I agree with CGMAI; if they also added a more natural colour, it would make a much more dramatic difference. And a bit of differentiation between the travel classes would be nice as well.

I like the look of the Premium Economy seat, fixed shell so no annoying the passenger behind when reclining, good move, wish BA would revamp their WTP to feature this.

I know they'll be flying these great birds on CAN-JFK.
How is CZ doing with the A380 on CAN-LAX? Would the 77W be a much more feasible a/c for this route?

Very surprised about 3-3-3 in Y. Well done to them.

While the seat looks good in J aside from being a little sterile as has been said. The F cabin definitely looks on the dull side at least from the angle in the post.

I think I prefer the CZ livery on the 77W more than any of their other aircraft. It fits well.

Amazing to see CZ get more top of the range aircraft....why aren't these planes going to MU? I spoke to a CZ A380 captain recently who said that the A380 was killing them - far too large for CZ, but that they had little choice over their fleet (centrally planned).

Their F suite is quite comfy, although I agree that the colours are a bit artifical.

Quoting AF185 (Reply 2):

Dated? Those seats are top of the range, and very comfy, and already installed on the A380. Nice to see them on the 77W, esp as they went for the nasty old A330 seats on the 787 (ok, maybe not nasty or old, but definately inferior to these seats).

Well, I think they are aiming for Skytrax 5*, which can only be achieved by 9 abreast or less on the 777.

How many other full-service Asian 777 operators are 10-abreast on their long-range international routes? The only one I can think of is Philippine Airlines, and CZ isn't competing with them. Even Garuda is 9-abreast on their new 77Ws.

Being the only 10-abreast carrier when almost all their Asian and many other competitors using 777s (including their major rival Air China and all U.S. 777 operators except AA) are 9-abreast wouldn't be good for business.

Huge losses related to A380. Originally they planeed to base A380 in Beijing for long-haul flights.
However, the plan never came true.

I'm not sure if dated is the word I would use. They are after all offering a 1-2-1 configuration in J and 9-abreast in Y. I'd consider this optimal for a 77W. I would have expected them to have done 2-2-2 in J and 10-abreast in Y so I'm impressed.

That's the thing. I like natural colour schemes best. None of EK's plasticky 'wood' paneling or bright gawdy colours. I like softer natural tones, leather (or high grade PVC, being the animal lover I am). SQ's colour schemes appeal to me best.

Perhaps CZ should have used a lighter shade of purple in F, light grey instead of white for the walls of the suite and something with more of a matte finish so that it looks less plastic. For J, a textured rather than plain lilac would have given it some character. Y looks alright to me.

But of course I'll first have to see the cabin firsthand to comment with conviction

Would also be nice to deploy these to CAN-SYD and CAN-MEL during peak season so that the gap between the A330 and the A380 can be filled.

First and business both look very similar to ANA, and I don't think anybody would call their seats "dated". A bit utilitarian maybe, but that's common for Asian carriers. They're still very comfortable and offer a *lot* of space. Not many western carriers offer 4 abreast in business.

CZ on the 777-200. These birds were used to Sydney. I'm not sure where else they flew having not followed the airline that closely.
Going from one 777 with 3-4-3 seating to the next 777 with 3-3-3 seating wasn't what I expected.

I do agree however with your points about it being a bad idea to compete against the (arguably) superior offerings from the other Asian airlines with a sup par product

Why are the Chinese characters for "China Southern" (Zhōngguó Nánfāng, 中国南方) written backwards on the side of the plane? It is a beautiful aircraft!

Because us westerners have it backwards!!

I should have clarified that I wasn't referring to the Gulf carriers. In the airline industry when the term "Asia" is used it normally doesn't include the Middle East. Of course the Middle East is part of Asia geographically.

Same reason 747s were initially 9 across and later became 10. Just wait long enough and you will see many though not all 9 across operators go to 10. In another thread someone pointed out the majority of deliveries and orders in the last few years of 77ws seem to be going to 10.
