AC's First 788 Painted

Thu Feb 27, 2014 11:10 pm

AC's first 787-8 Dreamliner rolled of the paint shop at Paine Field today.
Looks good, and if you will notice, the engine cowling's are painted in the toothpaste color instead of the grey or white many people thought they would be painted.
Looking forward to seeing it fly and join the fleet.

It looks great but am I the only one that think it looks undersized for the AC livery? I think it will look better on the 789

My thoughts exactly. While I am excited to see the 787 finally join the AC fleet, I'm really looking forward to seeing the -9 in AC colors.

Looks great. Man the 787 is a good looker!   The 787 could be painted in any livery and it would look good, but AC toothpaste green really suits the 787's sleek profile. Boeing got it right with the 787...well ahem, kind of

Personally I think it's ugly from broadside. Like the 767-200. Looks like a fishing weight. Terrible nose on it. Fat embraer.

The stretch will look much better . Anything darker than white will enhance it's portly lines from broadside.

Boeing finally made a twin aisle 737-600!!!

But it's still exciting seeing fresh painted, shiny, carbon

I'm not really a fan of the 78 but I must say this colour scheme does look good on the bird, suits it very well

If I'm not mistaken the Comet & Caravelle had very similar designed noses

They were similar in general shape, however the nose of the Dreamliner is shorter in length and less pointy compared to the Comet/Caravelle. The upper part is more curved downward than the lower is upward. And of course I'm not taking in account the completely different windshields.

Yes, there are of course subtle differences from modern design techniques.

Anyway, I like the shade of blue AC use, especially on this aircraft. It makes a nice change from the usual white we see nowadays.

Very beautiful aircraft. I will be looking to be able to book and fly on it. The 789 will look better because it was obviously designed to look better just like the 763 looks better than the 762.

Maybe the PQ stands for "Province de Quebec". The next deliveries could be MB for Manitoba, AB for Alberta, etc. Would be nice if they dedicated the first bunch of 787's like CP Air did with their "Empress of XX" fleet, we could have one for each of the provinces & territories. Any AC people here able to pass on the suggestion ?

More than similar, they were identical assemblies.

From Wikipedia:

"Sud's design licensed several fuselage features from de Havilland, a company Sud had had dealings with for several earlier designs. The nose area and cockpit layout were both taken directly from the de Havilland Comet, while the rest of the plane was locally designed."

That would be nice. But it's not the case. The next two AC 787s have assigned registrations HPT and HPU, as per the posted delivery schedule on this fine site: http://nyc787.blogspot.ca/

I have no idea if AC plans to use the available HPS, HPV (ummm), HPX, -Y or -Z registrations. HPR and HPW are already assigned (to a Cessna 188 and Hercules L-100 respectively).

Naming aircraft after destinations (LH, KL) or influential aviation pioneers (QF) is desirable, interesting and perhaps best of all, essentially free of charge.

From what I can remember, something like 30,000 gallons per year or about 0.25 to 0.35% fuel burn penalty.

Why does the color have anything to do with fuel burn? I'm guessing it's the weight of the paint or the drag caused by the surface, but isn't it possible to make the same white/gray paint in another color and keeping it's "functionality?"

Thank you!

As far as I understand these articles, the point is not the color, but rather a single thin layer of paint to keep the laminar air flow. The AC 787 engines do have a single color (nothing fancy) so they might have kept that laminar air flow intact.

I don't work for AC, but I know that the C-GHP* series is already used for some 767 aircraft (C-GHPD, C-GHPE, C-GHPN). For some reason, unlike a lot of other countries, I don't think there are blocks of registrations reserved for airlines (for example, C-GHPO is registered by a Bell 206B helicopter). C-GHPQ is simply the next available number in the C-GHP* series that's available. AC's subsequent 787s will be C-GHPT and C-GHPU.

I can agree that the VN livery will look stunning on the Fryliner, but I can't say that the RJ livery will, it just looks old and I fail to see how its going to look better on a Fryliner.

Canada terms to think in terms of fleet numbers, they are at least sequential. Are we still going to see the B77L at LHR this summer or was that a placeholder for the B788?

Does AC not use MICA metallic paint? I am sure that adds a few pounds over "regular" grey or white paint. Glad they chose to paint the engine colours, though!

I posted this in the production thread, but it should be posted here too. On aircanada.com it's showing that the 787 routes that were supposed to start April 1st (LHR, ZRH), have been pushed back to May 1st - equipment remains 333 on YYZ-ZRH and a miz of 77W, 77L and 763 on YYZ-LHR.

787 service still ending on the same date as posted earlier though.

HPR and HPW are already assigned (to a Cessna 188 and Hercules L-100 respectively).

As a sidenote, C-GHPW was originally delivered to Pacific Western Airlines in 1978. Still hard at work with First Air in Canada's north after 36 years, and the same registration since new. PWA sold it to NWT Air in 1983 which merged with First Air in 1998.

but AC toothpaste green really suits the 787's sleek profile.

Officially it's considered blue, not green. It looks quite different according to the lighting conditions.

I don't work for AC, but I know that the C-GHP* series is already used for some 767 aircraft (C-GHPD, C-GHPE, C-GHPN). Fo

C-GHPD registration appears to have been cancelled as it doesn't appear in the Transport Canada aircraft register. One site shows that 763 as "stored". I think it was a leased aircraft. GHPE and GHPN are both AC Rouge 763s, ex-Hawaiian Airlines aircraft acquired by AC in 2011.

Quoting briguychau (Reply 33):
For some reason, unlike a lot of other countries, I don't think there are blocks of registrations reserved for airlines

Years ago AC normally used consecutive registration series with minor exceptions, but hasn't done that for quite a while. The FIN (fleet identification number) is more important anyway for the airline's internal purposes. Interestingly, the first 787's FIN is 801, which was also AC's first DC-8 (and first jet) in 1960.
