Skymark Takes Delivery Of First A330

Fri Feb 28, 2014 2:05 pm

Skymark Airlines has taken delivery of its first A330-300 aircraft (MSN 1483, registered JA330A) today in Toulouse. Equipment with 271 Economy Plus seats in a 2-3-2 layout, the jet will fly on domestic/regional routes.

The aircraft will start flights in April 18, 2014 from Haneda to Fukuoka. Future A330 services may include Sapporo and Naha. The second aircraft (MSN 1491, to be JA330B) finished assembly and painting and should join the fleet shortly.

Beautiful bird, I'll be in Japan around that time so hope to catch her at HND.

Must be very spacious inside with 271 seats, seeing that Philippine Airlines put 440 in theirs !

It is incredible. I really want to fly this or, better yet, the Skymark A380 between NRT and JFK.
Upcoming flights:
April/May: AM MEX-SCL 788 (J), AM EZE-MEX 789 (J).

Thanks for this. That's a friday, and given my schedule isn't too bad, I'll try to stop by HND for some photos.

if you guys get any info on test flights/crew training, please send me an email or FB message. I'd appreciate it, so I can go grab some photos. I'll be returning to Japan on March 25.

The best part is Skymark has not raised fares on the A330 flights to Fukuoka, same as on 738s.

I am looking forward to their A380 taking on international destinations.
Hope it comes to FRankfurt one day. Twice a week would be enough.

Definitely I like Skymark's approach to have Premium economy as a base.
I will try it when I will be in Japan next.

2-3-2 on a regional A330 at a time when just about everyone is moving to 17+" seats on long haul aircraft? How can they do this?

How the they do it I don't know.

But SQ had the same layout on the A345 when they still had Y. They sold it initially with around a US$100 surcharge and quickly it went to the same fare as Y without discounts. You also could get it on SIN-CGK on any discounted Y fare available to that location. The difference with normal Y was enormous and especially long distance it was fantastic.

But of course even SQ wasn't able to make it work... (for entirely different reasons though, as the reasons for the spacious Y were different to begin with).

Am I mistaken or are they really attempting to go for 40 min turnarounds (as per the published schedule) ?

It's between 40 minutes to 50 minutes, depending on which flight it is.

Anyway, these are the Japanese we are talking about. So that is hardly a surprise. JAL and ANA used to have a turnaround time of just 50 minutes for the B747SR with more than 500 seats.

Completely different reasons. SQ was forced into that cabin or they wouldn't be able to fly non-stop between SIN and LAX/EWR. They lost money on it but they kept the route for prestige. Skymark does not need 2-3-2 for the routes they intend to fly.

For a brief conversion to US$, those fares listed there are between $110-$300. Depending on flight, time of day, etc.

Purchase 45 days advance and you can fly for less than $100 oneway. The walk up fare is around $200 O/W, which is about 40% lower than fares charged by ANA and JAL.

They'll be flying a plane with a price tag twice of the 738 but with only 100 seat difference. Fixed and variable costs will be higher on the A330 vs 738. The A330 will generate more revenue but will the additional revenue be big enough to offset the higher costs of flying A330s in an all Y+ configuration without raising fares? The more I look at it, I just don't see how they can make this plan work keeping fare levels constant with flights operated by 738s.

BTW, the flight/fare search was for the A330 inaugural flight on April 18. I was surprised to find that you could still book on the second cheapest "Sky Bargain 28" fare.

Is this compared to ANA and JAL Y class?

Yes, compared to ANA and JAL Y class. ANA's HND-FUK Y full fare is about $363 and for Y+, it is about $421.

Thank you.

Then there's room for Skymark to increase fares and still have the better product.

Too bad to hear this, was looking forward to the service start.

What is the going lease rate on A333s? $800K per month? Sitting idle for a little more than a month will cost them at least $1.6 million in lease payment for two ships, plus other expenses. This will definitely hurt their bottomline.

We should not forget that these A330s fly very short routes and carry not that much fuel, engines and MTOW have probably been de-rated too. All together, the trip cost and other fees of such an A330 are probably much lower than a "normal" A330 (but still more than a B737 of course).

It doesn't change the fact they'll lose money as long as the aircraft are staying on the ground, I agree.
