the WiFI is an STC that requires a supplimental type Certificate, once installed it requires a test flight and removal from our D85 ops specs during the testing. where the aircraft is removed from airworthiness , it is NOT a cosmetic change. The system interfaces with a LOT of equipment including Adirus to gain position sensing for interface with the sattelites also testing and some other non WiFi compatible equipment has to be modified or replaced.
The avionics suite is nearly all recertified to operate with wi-fi, FYI

If someone can confirm the electric outlets on all 744s I will change the Fleet Website. However, something is not correct on United.com as I checked many 744s flights and they do not show in (flight status amenities) power in Y except in N197UA (as posted on the Fleet Websitre). Either the individual aircraft are not updated or they released the updated seating chart prior to conversion completion.

I've done that same position with those same seats on 320s doing both IAH-BWI aand SFO-SNA. On one flight I had a jolly 300-pounder in the E seat (I was F) and on the other I had two giant Korean basketball players in E and F while I had D.

In the words of my friend -- Cajun writer / story-teller Justin Wilson, "I GAH-ROHN-TEE you that it was cramped" on the 320 model.

Guess that's how 'they' wanted it. Think that Boeing might have offered to paint 8,000th 737 in bigger characters on the fuselage, somewhere. Maybe they are just waiting for the 10,000th milestone.

I believe they will have power ports, streaming IFE, and WiFi. I think they are currently equipped with the latter two, and the power ports will be installed soon. It will require you to bring your own device for inflight entertainment -- there are no overhead LCDs.

I do think that UA would be wise to start renting tablets on aircraft equipped with streaming IFE and WiFi, because the one device could provide access to movies, music, games, email, internet, etc., and generate some pretty solid revenue, particularly on longer flights like transcons and redeyes. However, UA's current management seems somewhat incapable of making wise decisions at the moment, so it may take them a while to realize the revenue potential that WiFi and IFE stream with device rental can provide.

Removing the overhead monitors entirely seems like a mistake to me. I understand it for the A319/320 fleet, but the Hawaii config 772s are operating pretty long sectors. I realize that WiFi Stream is the next step in IFE offerings, but not everyone will have a PED to utilize the service. If they rented them out, it would be a different story, but going "dark" for potentially half the passengers on the aircraft feels like a significant step backwards.

They will have power ports relatively soon from what I understand. I recall reading something on FlyerTalk from UA's company rep that they plan to equip them with power ports around six months after they enter service. I'm not really sure why they couldn't just install them while they were in mods -- maybe they needed a new certification?

They are definitely getting power soon -- I believe one has already had power ports installed in Y. I'm guessing it just needs its certification and then it'll be installed across the fleet. Since they installed WiFi and WiFi Stream pretty quickly and because the 744s are in such desperate need, I'm guessing it'll happen fairly quickly. They may be making some poor decisions as a company, but they have at least publicly acknowledged that the Y product on the 744 needed some updating if it's staying in the fleet for another 3-5 years, potentially a little longer. I think they should have installed the 772 Y seats and AVOD a couple of years ago, but what do I know...

It doesn't seem to be live on many aircraft yet so we don't have a lot to go on in terms of how it is supposed to function and how it actually functions

I doubt it. It looks like 2515 is having an issue getting back to revenue service. When it does, look for 2514 to come into mod.

As I understand it? the Seat power and the Wi Fi integration are not compatible at this time, Seat power was previously installed on some airplanes but was deactivated because it was unreliable.
Engineering is working on it because it's needed but I haven't heard whether it's operational as of yet,

I thought since they wee putting the Charging posts in at the terminals that it wasn't considered such a big deal.,

Makes me feel bad for someone who sees that page and gets their hopes up, then when their device goes dead on the plane, they can't find the power port that was shown on the 744 flight they booked. Really hope they get busy with the power integration... Kind of a shame they couldn't do at the same time as their wifi installation, but no doubt there is a technical reason for that, I'm simply curious what it is... Wi-fi's easier to get certified?

Yeah, funny how that works.. I'm not even sure if the power ports are active on the one aircraft they've been installed on, which makes me think it's being certified. So technically none of the fleet has power. Even if only a handful of people check the website, see there's power, then find no power, that's still a handful of people every flight who will be pissed off enough to potentially abandon UA as an airline of choice in the future. People don't like being misled, even if it is a fairly minor issue like this.

I think they just came along on different timelines. WiFi began installation on the 744 what -- a year ago? That came along well before the announcement for WiFi stream and the decision to finally install power ports. Although I feel they could have and should have moved faster on this. I think they should have gotten power prior to the 772s.
