Question for everyone on this thread:

Is the work being done on the aircraft only cosmetics (paint/interior/wifi) or are they also doing major work on the airframe and engines? I am just amazed at the fact that they can have planes out of service for such a long period of time, it is very expensive to have a $200 MMM 777 idle for such a long time. It would make more sense to me if the planes also gets a major overhaul so as to come back on line better than new from an airworthiness perspective.

*************************************************************************************************************************************************
the WiFI is an STC that requires a supplimental type Certificate, once installed it requires a test flight and removal from our D85 ops specs during the testing. where the aircraft is removed from airworthiness , it is NOT a cosmetic change. The system interfaces with a LOT of equipment including Adirus to gain position sensing for interface with the sattelites also testing and some other non WiFi compatible equipment has to be modified or replaced.
The avionics suite is nearly all recertified to operate with wi-fi, FYI

Is there any news on the installation of Inseat Power in Economy of the 744's?
Is UA still going to do that, or is it likely to get pushed a year again to 2015?

Seems a bit discouraging that they originally stated 2013, then pushed it back to 2014.

The United web site states 744s have in seat power in all seats.

I was looking at this page initially; http://www.united.com/web/en-US/cont...inflight/connectivity/default.aspx

That said, this site (which I think I've seen linked around these forums a couple times);
http://sites.google.com/site/unitedfleetsite/mainline-fleet-tracking
shows that currently just one has all Power Outlets. Though I'm pretty sure I found that site through these forums, I just want to be sure, is that a good resource, or is there a different one I should look toward?

Are the HI config 772s getting a new second digit for the ship #s to identify the new config? Or are they keeping whatever they had?

If someone can confirm the electric outlets on all 744s I will change the Fleet Website. However, something is not correct on United.com as I checked many 744s flights and they do not show in (flight status amenities) power in Y except in N197UA (as posted on the Fleet Websitre). Either the individual aircraft are not updated or they released the updated seating chart prior to conversion completion.

Acft # 478 has completed her Scimitar testing. First -900ER that was equipped with them. Looks like the -900ERs will start getting them installed in September 2014, with the -700s getting Scimitars in October 2014.

Thought the 747s were getting ISP as they cycled through their heavy checks and other MODs . Thought they were all done by now.

# 822 should have entered the fleet today.
3 more -900ERs in May, # 823-825.
4 more -900ERs in Jun , # 826-829.
1 more -900ER in Jul, # 830.
2 more -900ERs in Aug, # 831-832.
2 more -900ERs in Sep, # 833-834.
2 more -900ERs in Oct, # 835-836.

United should be taking delivery of # 911 in May 2014, and # 912 in Oct 2014.

# 950 is still scheduled for Jul 2014, with # 951 scheduled for Sep.

They'll eventually need to replace the 2-class 763, so maybe a small top off of 788s isn't completely unrealistic. Will probably depend on how close the costs of the -9 end up being.

Yeah, but 950 is easier than 930 to tell the difference between the types. 980 for the 787-10s ? I wish they would have gone with new fleet numbers that are now available.

Wait till the Airbuses show,.....

Hey guys, I'm on UA284 PHX-EWR. A319 N4023 with grey leather slimline seats, last row window. I'm 6'1", -even with the seat in front of me reclined, my knees aren't touching the seat back. After all of the complaints I read about the new seats, I must say I'm pleasantly surprised. The seat is fairly comfortable as well

I've done that same position with those same seats on 320s doing both IAH-BWI aand SFO-SNA. On one flight I had a jolly 300-pounder in the E seat (I was F) and on the other I had two giant Korean basketball players in E and F while I had D.

In the words of my friend -- Cajun writer / story-teller Justin Wilson, "I GAH-ROHN-TEE you that it was cramped" on the 320 model.

Guess that's how 'they' wanted it. Think that Boeing might have offered to paint 8,000th 737 in bigger characters on the fuselage, somewhere. Maybe they are just waiting for the 10,000th milestone.

Well I'm not happy with whoever "they" are! I think they could have at least done the the UA 787 scheme or something to make it a little more special rather than just a weak little "8000" sticker that, unless it appears on both sides of the aircraft, will apparently only be seen in detail by catering crews!

I believe they will have power ports, streaming IFE, and WiFi. I think they are currently equipped with the latter two, and the power ports will be installed soon. It will require you to bring your own device for inflight entertainment -- there are no overhead LCDs.

I do think that UA would be wise to start renting tablets on aircraft equipped with streaming IFE and WiFi, because the one device could provide access to movies, music, games, email, internet, etc., and generate some pretty solid revenue, particularly on longer flights like transcons and redeyes. However, UA's current management seems somewhat incapable of making wise decisions at the moment, so it may take them a while to realize the revenue potential that WiFi and IFE stream with device rental can provide.

Let's hope they address this soon. There are 3 units in SFO/HKG at this moment, hopefully getting at least power. Surprising thing is that the old business seats now in the Hawaiian 772s had power previously - couldn't just hook up the power to those reused seats?

What the hell are you doing UA....:-(

My thoughts exactly... It's worse on the 744's. At least they took them off of Australia service, or what that's worth... Though SFO-Asia, FRA, and some LHR is sadly still stuck with them.

I really do hope that they manage to get Economy power on all of the 744 fleet before too long, a much needed addition, especially if they are banking on the Wifi and streaming IFE (Both of which I'd think would drain a device's batteries before a longhaul flight is likely to be even halfway or a quarter through.) If they don't bother getting power on them... well... It seems like the A350 can't push the 744's out of service quickly nor soon enough.

I wish I could coin the term 'Ghetto Queen' for the 744's without power.

For those that have dealt with the streaming entertainment though... Is it on demand, or just looping?

Thank You...The fact that they have no overhead monitors or power ports right now just removed UA off my consideration list for this couples trip from Houston to Hawaii. The nonstop 777 is no longer an attractive option...even in F.

Removing the overhead monitors entirely seems like a mistake to me. I understand it for the A319/320 fleet, but the Hawaii config 772s are operating pretty long sectors. I realize that WiFi Stream is the next step in IFE offerings, but not everyone will have a PED to utilize the service. If they rented them out, it would be a different story, but going "dark" for potentially half the passengers on the aircraft feels like a significant step backwards.

They will have power ports relatively soon from what I understand. I recall reading something on FlyerTalk from UA's company rep that they plan to equip them with power ports around six months after they enter service. I'm not really sure why they couldn't just install them while they were in mods -- maybe they needed a new certification?

I think this statement generally applies to every decision UA makes these days.

Surprising thing is that the old business seats now in the Hawaiian 772s had power previously - couldn't just hook up the power to those reused seats?

I only remember the old barcaloungers having em-power. Maybe they needed to reconfigure them somehow for 9v?

Quoting CALTECH (Reply 138):
There is one on the other side by the entry door.

Well that makes a little more sense at least. I still would have liked more, but then again, those of us aviation folks would have been the only ones to give a crap.

Agreed. I'll pretty much only fly a 744 if I'm up front. I've managed to successfully avoid Economy by booking another aircraft, airline, or upgrading for at least 10 years now!

They are definitely getting power soon -- I believe one has already had power ports installed in Y. I'm guessing it just needs its certification and then it'll be installed across the fleet. Since they installed WiFi and WiFi Stream pretty quickly and because the 744s are in such desperate need, I'm guessing it'll happen fairly quickly. They may be making some poor decisions as a company, but they have at least publicly acknowledged that the Y product on the 744 needed some updating if it's staying in the fleet for another 3-5 years, potentially a little longer. I think they should have installed the 772 Y seats and AVOD a couple of years ago, but what do I know...

I haven't used the WiFi Stream yet, but my understanding is that it's an on-demand service with movies and TV shows (maybe music too?). It sounds like it basically functions like the installed AVOD in the rest of the fleet, with play/pause/rewind/fast forward. If it works the way it's supposed to work, it should be a pretty good system. Since it's on your own device, it may even function better than some personal AVOD systems...those freeze and crash sometimes and the touch screens are generally pretty poor.

It doesn't seem to be live on many aircraft yet so we don't have a lot to go on in terms of how it is supposed to function and how it actually functions

I'm stuck on another "dark" 739 on PHL-SFO tomorrow....I can't wait.

I doubt it. It looks like 2515 is having an issue getting back to revenue service. When it does, look for 2514 to come into mod.

320:
N432UA exited LCQ 2158/2May with slimline seats/bins (already had WiFi)

739:
N37471 exited INT 2160/2May with WiFi

752:
N534UA entered SFO 522/21Apr - appears to be fleet exit - Sold to FedEx

763:
N658UA exited CWF 2155/1May in Globe paint - only 2 remaining w/o globe are in GSO maint now

772:
N220UA sked to exit HKG 896/4May
N793UA sked to exit HKG 2134/4May

As I understand it? the Seat power and the Wi Fi integration are not compatible at this time, Seat power was previously installed on some airplanes but was deactivated because it was unreliable.
Engineering is working on it because it's needed but I haven't heard whether it's operational as of yet,
When I go back to work in a couple of days I'll look into it and update you.
I thought since they wee putting the Charging posts in at the terminals that it wasn't considered such a big deal.,
I could be wrong..

Does anyone know what the E175 seats look like ? Are they similar to the new signature seats introduced for the CRJ700 and 737 or are they just the basic grey seats ?

It still seems a bit nutty (but somehow not too surprising) to me that United seemed to jump ahead and show the 744's as having power in economy for the seatmap on their site, while at this moment, as far as I know, they only have one done at the time of this posting...

This page shows "Yes" across the board for it; http://www.united.com/web/en-US/cont...inflight/aircraft/747/default.aspx Even though we know, that not all or even most have power yet, from the fleet site.

Makes me feel bad for someone who sees that page and gets their hopes up, then when their device goes dead on the plane, they can't find the power port that was shown on the 744 flight they booked. Really hope they get busy with the power integration... Kind of a shame they couldn't do at the same time as their wifi installation, but no doubt there is a technical reason for that, I'm simply curious what it is... Wi-fi's easier to get certified?

May I ask which type of planes had these issues?

Yeah, funny how that works.. I'm not even sure if the power ports are active on the one aircraft they've been installed on, which makes me think it's being certified. So technically none of the fleet has power. Even if only a handful of people check the website, see there's power, then find no power, that's still a handful of people every flight who will be pissed off enough to potentially abandon UA as an airline of choice in the future. People don't like being misled, even if it is a fairly minor issue like this.

I think they just came along on different timelines. WiFi began installation on the 744 what -- a year ago? That came along well before the announcement for WiFi stream and the decision to finally install power ports. Although I feel they could have and should have moved faster on this. I think they should have gotten power prior to the 772s.
