Eastern Air Lines L1011 Routes/timetable

Fri Mar 07, 2014 3:28 pm

I've been looking through Eastern timetables from '72, '82, and '87 over at departedflights.com and was wondering if anyone knows where I could find Eastern timetables in relation to each aircraft. I'd like to see what routes EA had their L-1011s working.

I remember when EA started KSFO they operated the L1011 from KMIA. The flight arrived around 9:00PM in SFO and went back to MIA as a redeye. Plus when they atempted to compete from JFK to SFO and LAX they operated L1011'S on their 3 daily flights to each city. Plus for years the morning nonstops from KBOS to KMCO and SJU was the L1011. Plus they had a daily KATL-KSTL-KSEA( memory is failing if plane continued on to PDX)

They were used extensively to SJU, JFK,MIA, BOS, LAX and once in a while on some other routes but they pretty much were used on the most heavily traveled routes.

From EWR they went to ATL, MCO, FLL, MIA, SJU, BDA.

I believe at one point they also had one of the Florida-EWR flights continue to BDL.

Did you check out the OAG section in departedflights.com? It lists a/c types.

From MIami Eastern flew many to Latin America. MIA to BOG was flown daily by L-1011. Miami to Panama and Lima were also nonstop, some of those flights went EZE.

Some Eastern L-1011 routes I have flown:

MCO-JFK Feb 1976
LAX-ATL Feb 1980
JFK-MCO Jan 1983
MCO-MIA Apr 1983
JFK-SJU-JFK May 1987

Always a nice ride on the L-1011 Whisperliner.

In the 1972 timetable L-1011's flights are designated as "Whisperliners"

http://www.departedflights.com/EA090672intro.html

The 1982 timetable shows both "L-1011 Whisperliners" and "A-300 Whisperliners"

TPA had it's share of EA L-1011 ops especially in the Winter peak season. It operated to ATL and on different schedules different NYC airports. It even briefly operated 1 one stop service TPA-MCO-EWR. The 1972 timetable for departed flights is for September off season in TPA so no 1011's. By the 1982 timetable widebody service at TPA was significantly reduced from the hay day of the early mid 70's and only 1 1011 to EWR is shown.

I just looked in my Jan 1974 OAG and there was 1 EWR and 1 JFK L-1011 round trip.

Cheers

The days when even moderate sized markets saw widebodies. Surprised that EA never had L1011 service to IAH or DFW.

I was on an EA L-1011 SEA-ATL-MIA on January 13, 1982. Same aircraft all the way with a stop at ATL. I remember the date because when I got to my hotel after arrival and turned on the TV, it was covering the Air Florida 737-200 crash in a snowstorm just after takeoff from DCA which had just occurred.

Eastern used L-1011s on the MIA-BGI-POS run before switching to A300s in the early 80s. I flew one in 1981 - remember it being almost empty!

There was a BDL-BWI-SJU service in the mid-70s. Back in those days it seems there was a wide array of add-on segments (BOS-BDL, BWI-BDL, MIA-MCO, DTW-CLE and other examples given) where one actually continued on board the large airframe, rather than a 'change of gauge' to an RJ which is so common now.

EA even used the L-1011 about twice a day on the 59 nm sector YYZ-BUF. Flights continued to ATL and Florida. They didn't do that because anyone wanted to go from YYZ to BUF but because they had no nonstop traffic rights to points beyond in those days before transborder deregulation.

EA L-1011 at YYZ in those days.

Why was EAL fleet paint inconsistent? There was not a standard look, always some kind of slight variations. Cheatline on windows, some below, 727 engines painted others just silver. It seems they never got a uniform look in place perhaps a symptom of their financial state.

Pan Am was the same, also TWA and Braniff at the end. When you're close to bankruptcy, aircraft painting is rarely a high priority.

The silver fuselage was introduced in 1977, and it was later (late 80s IIRC) revised to silver w/cheatline below windows. The airline stopped operating in January 1991. I suspect that the apparent hodgepodge of decoration had to do with these changes and the length of time needed to repaint their whole fleet after a design change (which was considerable back in the days of being the "largest airline in the free world"). The L10 at YYZ appears to have a nosecone for the first silver scheme tacked on to the old white paint job which looks like it was on its last legs (or should I say wings).

At least till the A 300 came on board Eastern flew L1011 flights from BWI to MIS and Bermuda. In the 80's, I remember Eastern running A 300's to MIA during the busy Winter and Spring tourist seasons.

A side note, Eastern flew at least one chartered flight from BWI to MIA for Superbowl 5 when the Baltimore Colts beat the Dallas Cowboys 16-13.

This is an urban legend.

Even on a quick go-around or touch and go (for training) and circuit, you would still retract the gear. If brake cooling was ever required, it normally takes no longer than a few minutes to cool them down by leaving them extended, far far shorter than even a YYZ-BUF leg.
Just because I stopped arguing, doesn't mean I think you are right. It just means I gave up!

I remember in the summer of 1990, toward the very end, EA still had one L10 flying BOS-ATL. Seeing that magnificent plane at the beautiful EA terminal at Logan was fun.

I was working for Bar Harbor airlines that summer, so had many chances to see the plane from the ground!

I remember back in June of 1980 waiting for our EA 727 flight home from MIA to BWI, we got to MIA nice and early so, I hiked from C pier to H and was able to check out DL DC-8's There was an 8 ready to push back from H 1 or H 2 going from MIA, CDG and ending up at BWI. Boy back then I would have loved to hop that bird for the ride. Back to Eastern and their L100 routes. That same trip I then hiked to B concourse which then was the newest at MIA and watched a white L1011 headed for SYR! I felt gipped. If Syracuse could get an Eastern L1011 why couldn't flight 172 which was MIA-BWI and then Hull Ontario worthy of the Tristar? Little did I know that would be my last Eastern flight and for that matter my last commercial flying till June of 1995!

The ATL-PacNW service was initially a milk run, ATL-STL-OMA-SEA-PDX, and I know that for a while an L-1011 did an all-stop, along with 727s. As time went on, the various intermediary stops went away, and with the 757s, it was just ATL-SEA.

Surprised that EA never had L1011 service to IAH or DFW.

Here's a picture of an EA L-1011 at IAH, with a DC-9 of their future corporate parent in the background:

Another EA L-1011 at IAH:

I don't know what routes EA used L-1011s on from IAH; I'd guess LGA/JFK and ATL.

EA was always much weaker at DAL/DFW than IAH; given that they were one of the smallest airlines in the market, it isn't surprising that L-1011s were not flown there.

Delta had L1011s on YUL-BOS, Eastern had them on YUL-LGA. now everything is served by multiple CRJs. Oh Joy....

In both November 1979 and April 1981 schedules (before and after the date of that photo), one of Eastern's 2 or 3 daily FPO-MIA fliights was an L-1011. Block time was 36 minutes on the 97 nm sector.

The ATL-PacNW service was initially a milk run, ATL-STL-OMA-SEA-PDX, and I know that for a while an L-1011 did an all-stop, along with 727s. As time went on, the various intermediary stops went away, and with the 757s, it was just ATL-SEA.
http://www.departedflights.com/EA090672.html - In 1972 this was the case, according to the timetable no flights were operated by whisperliners, so I'm guessing 727s.

http://www.departedflights.com/SEA74p1.html - In 1974 all EA operations in SEA are either 727 or 72S OMA/STL/PDX.

http://www.departedflights.com/EA050181.html - By 1981 OMA was no longer part of the NW flights, but STL remained. This was also during EA's short foray in the SEA-SLC market.
