This aircraft was only 11 years old.

If it has crashed after a sudden failure at altitude, (no record of a mayday) then the options are quite limited.

1. Structural failure, (reply 26).

2. Weather.

3. Bomb, (but who has a grudge against Malaysia).

If there was a belly landing, how long would it float?.

Another avenue for investigation is the military tensions between China and the ASEAN states

There is the possibility of a miscalculation or a mistake.

Most of the heightened military activity is naval though

I just hope it doesn't affect the search and rescue efforts

Thoughts and prayers are with everyone on board and their families. Hopefully this all turns out well and everyone is safe and sound.

Worst case scenario is that it crashed into the ocean. Let's all hope not.

A chopper is currently in search for 9M-MRO.

Could something from North Korea reached that far?

It would have to be a ballistic missile, and those aren't remotely accurate enough to hit a moving target, particularly one moving as fast as, and as relatively small as, an airliner. Plus, if anything was launched, we'd know.

I believe we can safely rule that out.

I don't know why people get upset about all the speculation. This is a site of aviation enthusiasts. We are not CNN. We are not accountable to fact check everything we say.i think it is perfectly normal for a group like this to bounce around all sorts of theories, (as enthusiasts on any topic would do)

I noticed this tidbit in the Sydney Morning Herald. If true, it's an interesting coincidence. Not sure what crash they're referring to...

"The missing plane is believed to have been involved in a crash in August, 2012, when it damaged the tail of a China Eastern Airlines plane at Shanghai Pudong Airport, according to unconfirmed reports.

In the incident, the tip of the wing of the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 broke off."

Firstly, I hope that a miracle may happen.

Secondly, there is a significant political context at both ends of this flight. We all know about the separatist movement in western China and the Kunming railway massacre this week. But yesterday a court convicted Malaysia's main opposition leader of sodomy charges which have been widely criticised inside and outside Malaysia.

So if there has been a disaster there are political as well as mechanical hypotheses which need to be evaluated.

Sounds pretty conclusive on your part to me. Care to share what your cause is when we don't even know what happened yet?

Safety record as in having no fatilities (i am not saying that the aircraft is unsafe per se). All i am saying is that there has been a hull loss with a fatality in the case of OZ and POTENTIALLY (potentially being the keyword) in the MH case. That is all there is to it in my post when i said that the safety record of having NO fatalities on the 777 has ended with the OZ crash. Cause is a different ballgame as the OZ crash final report is not yet out.

AF447 loss does not make the aircraft unsafe perse but when folks (including pilots) talk of it in loose terms say that yes, there has been an A330 hull loss with fatalities so it does not have a 100% safety record.

[Edited 2014-03-07 18:04:47]

And finally, since you mentioned i seemed to know the cause, looks like you did not read what i posted earlier

Quoting 747megatop (Reply 49):
But folks...too early to speculate (but my inner gut feeling says "lost contact" is not good since the Aircraft sould have surfaced somewhere now).

This is likely a terrible tragedy from what we know at this time. Has there been any signs of debris yet?

On MSNBC at about 9:01 PM, they used a photo of a MH 777 from Airliners.net taken by Jonathan Mayer.

Just FYI for anyone interested: according to Wikipedia the Gulf Of Thailand has a mean depth of 45M and a max depth of 80M

This might be kind of good. At least, for chances of survival, considering they water-landed and even for the rescue of the CVR and FDR.

Sat Mar 08, 2014 2:10 am

Via CNN:

"[retired AA pilot] said the plane is 'about as sophisticated as any commercial airplane could possibly be,' with an excellent safety record.

There is one recent blemish: An Asiana Airlines Boeing 777 carrying 291 passengers struck a seawall at San Francisco International Airport in July 2013, killing three people and wounding dozens more."

Even news is trying to get people to jump to conclusions. Nothing about OZ214 had anything to do with the safety of the 777. Not to mention this is an entirely different situation.

The idiot Pierce Morgan just said the Boeing 777-200ER can fly for 18 hours non-stop. Of course it can, empty! At least Richard Quest is more knowledgeable.

Let's hope for a good outcome to this as unlikely as that sounds- Thoughts and prayers with family of those on-board and those on-board.

When an aircraft is 'lost' at cruise altitude - the safest phase of flight - it's natural to speculate at this early time.
Time will find a cause for this missing aircraft but now speculation is natural.

Part of the problem with wild speculation is that it tends to drown out actual facts. It makes discussions like this difficult to follow, especially since nowadays, any major incident is going to grow to a 250+ post thread (in 2, 3 or 4 parts) within a day or so.

He is an idiot, I agree. However, I think Richard Quest has really done a good job on his research over the years. He got flamed a while back for mis-reporting an accident (I forgot which one).

Also, I wish CNN would correct their map or at least footnote it. It gives the impression of the flight path, which I don't believe is correct (based on what I read here).

It's around 9am in Vietnam, the area others have speculated. If it was over water, off the coast, I certainly hope for the best. But being at night, situational awareness would be tough with a dark sky and dark water.

I hope for the best.

Why is everyone so down on the news media? Typical a-net news media bashing. The news media seems to be more credible and less speculative than a-net.

If it was landed in an airport, why not to contact their HQ as this is going on press now for 2 hours at least, and it lost contact more than 7 hours ago. GPS and other failures do not mean telephone failure.

Sorry, it didn't make sense.
