BA 38 ice crystals in a fuel system is a textbook case of a design flaw, ice shouldn't be there.

Let me rephrase then: It is not an aerodynamic inherent problem with the plane or even something that came off the production line as faulty. Boeing had a sollution for ice crystals and it was incorporated in the production. As with most of the problems having to do with the elements at some time another aspect is going to arise. It did and it was indeed fixed.

Safe to say the plane is lost and the passengers are dead. That is not going too far out on a limb. When planes drop off of radar, they don't show up hours later in one piece. But let's just hope it is not murder. Or worse, Silk Air 185 or Air Egypt 990 kind of murder. That is the unkindest cut of all.

Would there be any reason that the Chinese authorities would hold back information in the event of a hijacking?

Of course! China is the least transparent when it comes to these types of events, although it has been harder of late with social media. I was thinking perhaps it could be Uighurs hijacking the plane to PEK, coming on the heels of the massacre in Kunming last week.

My thoughts to the passengers and their families. Also to the workers who have set about trying to find the first answers to this mystery. If the worst has truly happened, then I hope those workers remain safe and are able to complete their duties to the best of their ability.
Good night, and keep watching the skis. Uh, skies.

You must be fun at parties.

Until the press conference, we simply don't know what has occurred. Is what you're saying likely? Sadly, yes - but that doesn't mean we should put it in the "safe to say" category just yet. You never know...

A Malaysian Airlines representative on CNN just denied reports of the plane having landed safely so can;t believe someone started such a cruel rumor about it landing in Nanang (sp)

It may be a case of "mistaken identity" if MH has scheduled service to that airport.

Is a fire a possibility? Would certainly account for radar and comms loss. And yes i know backups are in place for such an event

If I had landed somewhere without phone service I would have cranked up the HF and called mother! With HF you can call anywhere! This has happened to me in a different way but similar and that is what I did. One of the first things you do is phone home: HDQ's. You can do it from the left seat. I can emotionally identify with them. I really feel for the crew doing what ever they can do to keep it going. I pray that they have an awesome story to tell us all and the pax have some incredible pix.

It is possible, but the lack of a distress call makes it unlikely. Even SR111, which had a fire that spread very rapidly, was able to advise ATC of their situation before things went dark. And of course fire standards have been tightened since then.

Not necessarily. Even with complete power loss it can glide. May be it landed on a rice paddy field in Vietnam. May be it is in China and authorities are interviewing every person on-board before they release a statement. Why not wish a good outcome until told otherwise.

It could be. If this was the case the pilots priority would be to get it down to the ground asap before it became uncontrolable. Based on the aircraft last known location that could have meant a ditching and water evacuation.

I talked to a volcanologist on twitter, and he said that there was no ash advisories for the area and most of the ash from Indonesia this time of year flows SW out to sea over the Indian Ocean.

Having flown over the Gulf if Thailand many times no doubt it will turn up soon.
The Gulf is full of thousands and i mean thousands of fishing boats.
Enough that you coukd almost mistake the water for a star filled sky.
The weather in my experience is generally fairly benign this time of year with the monsoon in the Southern hemisphere.
Ho Chi Minh uses datalink for primary comms so getting out a distress message would not be as easy as via Vhfut a call should of if possible been put out on vhf anyway.
Sounds sudden..guess we will find out at some point soon but i doubt it will be long just due to the incredible number of shipping traffic.

I wonder if it possibly could have collided with a drone, I have read about birdstrikes before, one at FL360 over Colorado once and one at FL370 over Africa.

My hearts and prayers go out to those on board and those who were close to them.

Based on what I've been reading about this accident/incident, if it does turn out to be a crash, then I think the most likely explanations are as follows:

1. Murder-suicide: Similar to SilkAir 185, EgyptAir 990, and/or Mozambique 470.

2. Catastrophic pilot error or mechanical failure which left the crew with insufficient time to make a distress call.

3. Sabotage (bomb and/or hijacking) - perhaps involving one or more pilots and/or crew members on board.
Long live the Boeing 747!

Nearly always? I don't remember how the AF447 thread went, but most of the speculation was accurate enough on OZ214. Do you have any examples to prove your point?

Just an observation- Today's MH370, now without contact for 10 hours, and due in Beijing 5 hours ago, was code-shared with China Southern Airlines as CZ 748, - 70% of the passengers Chinese Nationals.

How likely is mid air collision?!? I mean the ac was supposed to be close to Vietnam. Anyone know anything about Vietnam ATC?

I was just watching a documentary on Boeing 777 earlier today and how safe its been with almost 1200 deliveries. Parents left on a EY 77W from YYZ-AUH just hours ago, went to flightradar24 to see their flight take off...and then saw this news on the side... Could not imagine hearing something like this only mere hours after watching that documentary.

I guess, like millions of others, I mistakenly thought that CNN would be the best place to get live info on an event like this, then I kept watching hoping he'd go. And now he's finally gone, although the reporting isn't that much better, still showing that stupid incorrect red flight path.

Oh it's just as well, since there is nothing new to say for now. BBC World News just had a recap, quoting what the airline and Xinhau News have said, saying that's all the news, every bit they have. Beats speculating or pontificating like Piers.

If it was a case like AF447, there were ACARS messages sent to the airline, wouldn't there be something similar if the plane hit the water or land? I really do hope they just landed at some remote place, even though it is unlikely. I understand they must be looking for the beacon signal given out by the black box?
