Yeah, you're right. I only downloaded one airport add-on (Frankfurt Airport for FS 2004) and a few new aircraft (in various liveries). I never really got into the FS scene like some people, including one of my German relatives (he really loves train sims as well).

If the ocean currents were a mild but steady 5kmh, floating wreckage could now be 1600 km away from the point where the black boxes and any sunken wreckage is located.

There is a conviction among many Americans, including FlyingWithFish and some on this board, that the terrorism angle is the correct one. Given 9/11 and the ongoing War on Terror, it is perfectly understandable. The US public is constantly bombarded by the press with news on the War on Terror.

In the same way, many pilots think it was probably a mechanical issue, perhaps because the thing that keeps many pilots up at night is a mechanical issue they can't deal with, most particularly fire.

In that context, I wonder if FlyingWithFish is a man who knows his audience very well, or if he genuinely believes the terrorism angle is the only one that makes sense.

It's the only angle that intrigue's most American's and keeps them coming back to his ridiculous Twitter feed. Could he be right in the end? Maybe, but he is definitely fueling the terrorism paranoia fire that many American's have failed to get over. I can't stand people who exploit this fear...

So if they found some debris that has to be what, several hundred miles from the crash site at least? That's still a long way to go. How long have the black box pingers worked before? The advertised length is 30 days, but you'd think it could go on for longer in ideal conditions.

It's almost 3pm AEDT - won't get dark here for another 4-4-5 hours. AWST is currently 3 hours behind AEDT - given the search area was a few thousand kilometres further west there'd be at least another 8 or so hours of daylight from time on posting.

This is what happens when "reporters" try to figure out a mystery. "Facts" that are of low-reliabiility are presented right alongside definitive facts, leading to erroneous conclusions. When a guy on Hannity tonight tried to say that the little bit of actual information in the public domain still lines up just as well with a Payne Steward type situation, Hannity shot him down by talking about preprogrammed turns and such. Well I disagree that those are facts. "Talk to the New York Times, then" said Hannity. Really, Sean? The Times, which is still confused about the difference between scratchpadding a waypoint and moving it into the route?

In any event, it will be very interesting to see what happens if we find that the aircraft, a stable platform, was just flying along without the benefit of human control. No reason to believe that happened, but the point here is that there is really no evidence that it didn't happen.

The thing that is just so hard for me to understand is the fact that if it was mechanical why was nothing said. Australia isn't a short hop from it's last contact.

It is almost noon in Perth right now which is I believe southeast of where this was apparently spotted.

Then - you ask, of course, "Why is he holding a press conference rather than waiting for confirmation."

The answer is that this is a huge international story and he feels it is important to show Australia is doing their part.

The regular junk that was spotted in the Gulf of Thailand and the Malacca Strait will be much more spread out in the Indian Ocean, so there is a much higher probability that this debris is related to MH370.

Not to be Western / US centric, but kudos to Australia, NZ, and the US if they have indeed found it... I trust their developments and competency more than the Malaysians at this point.

And assuming this really is MH370, I hope FlyingWithFish fades into oblivion. It seemed like he was always ahead of the media and he often was, probably because the same leakers told the media the same thing they told him. He just sounded so pompous and arrogant I was hoping he was wrong (minus the fact that the passengers might have been alive.)

Let's see what the Aussies have to say... can't say this is the best outcome if this is MH370 but at least the families will have closure not wondering if their loved ones are alive or not...

I don´t think he is. Not after all the ridiculousness we´ve seen by so called "authorities" over the days. He has solid information.

They had already narrowed the search to a very small (relatively speaking) area in the past few days, so they knew what they were doing and more or less where they were going to find stuff. It is telling that it was in that area where this so called "satellite imagery" is coming from.

I wonder how often they're imaging the area they think they may have found some debris? If it's frequent enough they should be able to define a drift pattern if they have a starting date/place by comparing the photos.

So Abbot said 'Two possible objects related to MH370 have been identified'. What in the hell does that even mean? Identified as MH370 debris or identified as just objects? At the same time, I doubt he'd go in front of parliament if he wasn't quite optimistic. Sad that in this case 'optimism' is in relation to a 777 wreckage.

I just looked at the map again, the search area is the same distance from Perth that Melbourne is from Perth - 3-4 hour flying time from PER.
