OAG Changes 4/4/2014: AA/B6/DL/UA/US/VX

FAQ

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares what is for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. I remove the schedule adds if I see them and show a year over year (YOY) comparison if I notice them.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard. This causes flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

VX YOY Schedule
These are the changes thus far to the VX schedule vs the prior year. They just reiterated that they are not taking any more planes this year in their earnings release. It looks to me like even the SJC closure only keeps them even vs. the prior year. They have not dropped what is needed to fund the slots they have acquired. Curious...

I agree re: MKE/DFW/STL but BOS and TPA generate strong local demand such that they can probably exist irrespective of the CLE hub.

1x 319? Really that is all the connections that MEM has out West? I know its a slower time but still you would think there would be more people heading out west from a former hub.

The summer schedule on JFK-BOS is showing 4x 319 + 2x CR9 (656 seats) so going to 6x 717 (660 seats) is essentially capacity neutral. The spring schedule is 7x CR9 though (532 seats). The 717 is a much better suited aircraft for this type of route than the A319 and a mainline aircraft versus a CR9 will allow for storage of rollerboards in the overhead bins.

Its only 1x per day right now and has been scheduled at 1x per day for the summer. Not sure why the advanced fall schedule was originally showing 2x, but that really just a continuation of the status quo.

DL doesn't care about the westbound connections as much, if they can flow them over ATL or MSP. AA via DFW offers a much more adventageous schedule to west coast markets.

Does this mean 9W will be operating this route from May? Let me know if there is any change coz I have a couple of bookings on EY102/103 in May.

I checked flights out on the United website on a saturday in april, still twice daily. The service was launched yesterday.

[Edited 2014-03-31 07:44:47] turns out it is only 1 x daily on the 13th, prolly because of a charter or maintenance, but it goes back to 2 x daily after that.

It seems like it. I was looking through the June schedules yesterday and there are CR7s on DFW-ASE, DFW-AMA, DFW-MAF, DFW-XNA, DFW-LIT, DFW-CLE, DFW-JAN, and one other destination that I don't remember... Over the course of a day, 20 departures.

That's great news. would be nice to get a plane on CRW-DFW that isn't ever restricted to 25 pax on a hot day.

Was FWA the last one? It's probably the longest DFW ER4 route left.

The CR7 has always been used on DFW-ASE; it rotated from LAX-ASE-DFW-ASE-LAX last time I checked.

I suspect there will be more and more CR7/CR9 flying at DFW in the years to come. As flying at other, more competitive hubs - like ORD - transitioning to the superior product offered by the E175, thus freeing up some CR7s, and more new CR9s flow into the AA network, I suspect there are lots of longer and/or more premium ERJ145 markets - CVG, CID, CHS, SAV, GRR, FWA, MSN, etc. - that will move to larger, 2-class RJs.

I don't think the two are comparable. The overwhelming demand to Florida is out of DCA. Domestic inside-perimeter O&D is almost nonexistent at ex-IAD compared to DCA.

If UA leaves CLE-TPA/RSW/MCO, etc., it will be because the station is being totally reduced to a spoke, without any additional service outside of the hubs. For now, the plan is to maintain service to major O&D markets, a category for which Florida certainly qualifies.

Yes. And indeed I think that's exactly what many are expecting and intimating.

Okay, but the is that, for a market where United has already dramatically reduced its presence, Florida tends to be among the markets easiest for a competitor - especially a lower-cost and/or lower-fare competition - to surgically pick off from United. Put another way: if Southwest were to put just 1-2 daily 737s into any or all of these markets, I am highly skeptical that United would fight them for these routes or just hang it up. BOS is a slightly different dynamic because it definitely does have a business component for which United should be a more viable competitor, but there too, I am not sure that if JetBlue were to come in with 3-4 daily EMB190s or A320s, United wouldn't just cut it.

I think UA failed to anticipate the alacrity with which other airlines are moving to fill the gap in CLE. In addition to the added DFW flight in July, AA will upgrade four of six CLE-ORD flights to E75's from 50 seaters.

OK, I'm going to weigh in on the IAD vs DCA vs CLE issue.

The situation is exactly the same. Here's why. There's plenty of people living near IAD. The issue isn't that people only want to fly to Florida from DCA and not IAD. The problem is that UA does not care to match the LCC fares at DCA so the market disappears and leaves for DCA. They don't care to match because they don't see Florida as strategic enough to justify losing money. Same will happen in CLE in spades. The reason there are no LCCs left flying IAD-Florida is that they all got into DCA and there's nobody left really who needs a way to fly there from WAS. Additionally, I'm not sure it is really any cheaper to operate from IAD vs. DCA so there isn't a cost reason to be there. I'd guess BWI is cheaper than either DCA or IAD which is why NK is there.

If a start-up came into IAD-Florida they would do fine, but the DCA carriers have no reason to do it and UA doesn't for the reasons stated.

Quoting kgaiflyer (Reply 30):

Can't see which flight. It's possible they just switched the equipment to an invalid equipment code by mistake. I've seen that before. The fact it is so close in is odd.

It would be nice to see some of our CRJ/ER4 MKE-DFW see larger CRJs mixing into the schedule early next year. These midday flights bookended by morning and evening MD80s seem to be going out full most days of the week. We're currently sitting at 2 x daily MD80 and 2 x daily CRJ/ER4 going up to 2 x MD80/3 x ER4 in early June.
