Who designated these so called "experts" as experts in anything? They speculate, hypothesize and believe their own hype. CNN has lost its way from the days when they were a respected media outlet. Now they are more like People magazine on TV. Anderson Cooper should start to plan a move.

This gives us reason to assume that CNN reporters are master glider pilots, and that they just recently discovered that B777 is not the world's most efficient sailplane in thermic.

I've heard that Boeing is developing technology for its 797 that will allow it to keep flying after running out of fuel. This is in addition to the tires maintaining pressure without any air inside, among many other improvements. However, they remain stumped as to how to ensure that the plane does not accelerate after pushing the throttles forward.
Good night, and keep watching the skis. Uh, skies.

This is unbelievable... And the worst part is, many people who doesn't know a lot about aviation believe this and will ask why we put so much fuel in the tanks if the airplane almost maintains altitude without fuel...

It is just as with cars. When the tank is empty the car struggles to maintain its speed...

You guys need to understand the context of the quote. I'm pretty sure this is the report I saw where they were demonstrating how the aircraft's autopilot would handle both engines shutting down. The quote is quite right, it will struggle to maintain flight despite the fact that it's losing altitude and airspeed.

I hate that I'm defending them, but I think the quote is ridiculous because the photo lacks context.

Yes. I was actually watching the episode and you are right. They were talking about how the autopilot will attempt to maintain altitude even without power BECAUSE THE FUEL RAN OUT, and how it will make the airplane stall and dive, not glide peacefuly into the ocean.

But still, whoever is in charge of the teletype, should have worded that caption some other way. It is really hilarious.

It's CNN, a major broadcaster that has lost all credibility. I would have expected something like that.

On a related note, it is amazing how everyone suddenly became an aviation expert after MH 370.. so many people were ranting on social media sites about what they were certain happened to the jet and why!

Indeed an embarrassment for CNN. There was a time when reputable news channels and newspapers had Aviation Correspondents on call, usually retired aviation professionals. You'd think CNN would have someone like that who they could phone to run things by before transmission. But alas, the vast majority of their audience are laypersons.

Quoting SEPilot (Reply 16):

Any aircraft can. For a few seconds!

Quoting Silver1SWA (Reply 23):
The quote is quite right, it will struggle to maintain flight despite the fact that it's losing altitude and airspeed.

Could be venturing into the realms of hair-splitting, but it will maintain flight, its just descending flight. Could be losing airspeed, but assuming it was trimmed for an airspeed, it will maintain that speed in the descent, discounting the pitch-power couple due to the thrust line being below the C of G.

Quoting AR385 (Reply 24):

I don't drive 777s but, if both engines fail, both generators fail. Will A/P stay engaged on battery power?

They insist upon using non-aviation qualified people to talk about a subject about which they know nothing. Hence Richard Quest. For some reason they want to sensationalize a tragedy and attempt to turn it into a ratings bump. Note to CNN execs--It's Not Working. You look silly and trivial to the world. The thing you have to remember with experts on TV, is that they're likely the only ones that

1) Agreed to voice an opinion
2) Agreed to have their name linked to that opinion

Journalism has replaced basket-weaving as the degree of choice for many struggling college student-athletes.

If today's media is this bad with information on a topic that many of us are familiar with, imagine how much bad information they're putting out on topics that we know very little about that we accept on face value.

You are spot on.

But today, the number of journalists that are tasked to thoroughly research something (like the guys who uncovered Watergate, for example) is dwindling. News have to be put out quickly, you have to catch the reader's attention by interesting and short pieces, and the viewers and readers don't have much time anymore. In my childhood days, it was normal to read a newspaper in your noon break for up to 45 minutes, or even an hour. And now families aren't even watching animal documentaries anymore in the evenings.

It's a vicious circle driving journalism into the ground.

That's why I'm replacing more and more news websites with competent blogs. I know that some of these blogger's aren't impartial in their political manners, but I know that they know what they're writing. Now it's up to the personal honor of the blogger, not the name of "CNN", "New York Times" under which they are employed.

It's like religiously following what mandala499 and Pihero are writing here.  Their "news" may be long or short, but they can be trusted. And you can read their wisdom at any time you want. And you don't have to pay for their family history, their holiday pictures and their political opinions if you don't want to read them.

We need a new definition of "newspaper" and "news".

I can see where CNN was going with this, although most of us ANetters think this is as an asinine statement as imaginable.

Maybe they were trying to dispel the belief in many "novice viewers" minds that an airplane doesn't simply glide at altitude, and that it requires engine thrust to maintain lift?

I'm trying to throw CNN a bone here...lol

My question is, how do we know this? Without the wreckage and the black boxes, we really have no proof that the plane actually ran out of fuel (it could be still flying) and no proof that if it did run out of fuel, that it lost altitude.

Probably. But the random guy who zaps across TV channels in this case also has to be an idiot. These days I´m sawpping between the BBC and CNN.

The BBC is excellent, but sometimes they go off and cover stories of countries I really have nil interest in, or the fact that the new head of the Royal English Ballet (Or whatever the name is) is new and is a Spanish woman. Since ballet is like clorazepam, alprozalam and a good shot of vodka combined to me, besides not having any plans on visiting Djibouti, that´s when I change to CNN.

Well, I rarely watch TV anyway. On news websites, I can much better filter out the benzodiazepines. But in the past eight years or so, we got these nasty "documentaries" on TV, freshly imported from the US or made in Germany. Heavy use of background music, flashing from tidbit to tidbit instead of taking five minutes to answer a bigger question, for example... hey, why the fook was the UH-1 so important down there in Vietnam? Was it due to certain military tactics?

Instead, you see G.I.s jumping from a UH-1, a non-informative commentary, and then a flash back to the UH-1 used by the German army, practicing autorotation.

The viewer needs to be able to differentiate between "news" and "opinion". If a viewer has absolutely no information base to build on, they will probably take everything they hear/see as the whole truth. Until these "experts" are proven wrong, they will continue to throw their opinions out there and see what sticks.

That would be funny if it were not so pathetic. It's dark 13,000 feet undersea. Gee, what a revelation.

Frankly even if they find the wreckage the DFDR and CVR will have been erased. Anyone who knows how to disable a transponder and ACARS knows to pull the CB's on the orange boxes. Whoever did this--and yes, I do think it ws a someone--knew exactly what they were doing and did not want the airplane found. If you were found guilty of a crime of this magnitude it will cancel your life insurance in a nanno second. With no wreckage, IMHO, insurance carriers will have to pay off all claims.

And to quote CNN, airplanes with no fuel tend to fly funny. Airplanes cannot remain aloft for a month.

Only on CNN

Up until now, the best media quote on an air accident had been:

"So far, we've determined that the crash occurred when the aircraft hit the ground."

Oh thank you so much for just cracking me up. CNN has to turned into a nauseatingly ambulance-chasing network, and with drivers like Wolf Blitzer, et.al., you know they haven't a clue about a lot of what they are talking about.
Mary Schiavo on as an "expert" is a joke because she is an anti-airline lawyer with a flair for the dramatic.
I'll stick with the New York Times, thanks.

The term "Breaking News" should be permanently banned.

I don't know why everyone here is bashing CNN? The real culprit here is Boeing and the Big Oil.
It is a common knowledge in certain circles that Big Oil has lobbied hard to force Boeing to design planes that need fuel to keep flying.

The planes should be designed such that they use fuel to bring them back to earth. This way a lot of fuel can be saved and air travel will become safer. If a plane is out of gas it will just stay in air until someone brings more fuel to complete the flight.

You guys are sooo negative.

I should remind you that this is an aviation forum, not a place for people to rant about "Greedy Corporations" and "Big Oil."
And honestly, how is that to blame for MH370? Please explain.
