Kind of like the old days when they yelled "Tools Down!" and went out on strike!

Stick it to da man!

PS: BOS thread mentions "LH 744, and an LH 343 in the remote stands near the Delta hanger" for the same reason...

And SFO has a 744 and A346 at the remote area. It is supposed to be a three day strike.

Ahh, so German strike = US parking fees!

I wonder if the pilots (and the rest of the crew) wait it out where the a/c is, or if they go back to home base?

haha...would be a little awkward for them to picket in front of their crew hotel I would think

Ummm... are they flying magic carpets back or riding on brooms? With the airplanes sitting there and unless they are buying their own tickets on other airlines, they aren't getting home.  Wink  Wink

So they're paid to sit out the strike in a hotel while their colleagues are picketing the airport and not earning a salary?

Looks like a LH 747-8 (D-ABYJ) and A340-600 (D-AIHS) are also stuck at ICN. What happens to the crew that flew them all the way there? Are they staying there on their own dime now?

My guess is the whole idea of keeping the aircraft away from base is to speed recovery when the strike ends. If the crew have to be flown back from Frankfurt to their plane, this is a futile exercise.

If it was merely an issue of apron space at FRA, they would have parked the planes at nearby airports in and around Germany instead.

They all fly back on Saturday arriving FRA/MUC Sunday morning after which the hub ops are almost completely recovered. Crew rotation is simply delayed by the duration of the strike..

Should be back to normal by Monday, which makes this "3 day strike" actually a 5 day strike, For a three day strike, one day would have been sufficient.

The pilots should vote less militant leaders into the VC Jobs. A couple more of These Stunts plus all the strikes by the toilet cleaners Union or anyone else who has a key function in aviation and LH is a Takeover candidate.

For working conditions under the new, then owners refer to US carriers, FR and the like.,

No, in Germany, in case of a strike you still get a salary. Either by your employer and/or by the union.

Ironically enough, the more senior staff certainly can afford the tickets... Then that leaves the little problem of a shortage of such tickets due to, uhm, the strike...

If I recall from the BA strikes a few years back, the pilots always flew back to base before going on strike (please do correct me if I am wrong here)

Richard, you're right. And not just the pilots.

The latest cabin crew strikes at British Airways (now four or so years ago) were only in effect at Heathrow. Any crews downroute (away from base) WERE allowed to operate back to London without being considered to have crossed the picket lines.

Many BA crew would return from a trip and go straight to the picket lines.

Of course, at the same time, many BA crew who were on the picket lines also went to work discreetly, not wanting to lose money or staff travel benefits but also not wanting to miss the opportunity to be spotted supporting the union. But I digress.
Cabin crew, doors to manual and cross check.

There are currently 2 LH A380s parked in SIN. 1 operated LH778 arriving at SIN on Tuesday with the return LH779 cancelled and the other arrived in SIN on Wednesday with its return flight similarly cancelled. I assumed the first aircraft had gone tech before reading about the strike.

So I have a friend who was scheduled to fly FRA-MEX on April 2nd for wedding this weekend and needless to say she'll be missing the wedding. I feel like an ass though because she had told me she was flying LH and I knew about the up-coming strike and I didn't piece it together for her at the time   Of course I didn't tell her I knew about the strike but I still feel bad. The hotel is paid for, whether there is a strike or not. When you think about it, same number of crew members at the hotel by virtue of no new crew coming in.

The striking crews should have to pay for their own rooms and expenses during the strike period and should also not receive their salary. If that were the case I would at least respect them for putting their money where there mouths are. As is what is the sacrifice they are making for their cause? A cowards way in my opinion. If you truly stand for something you should be willing to sacrifice to make your case. f they had to put up or shut up they would shut up quite quickly. These guys are just taking a free paid vacation...wow I really respect their tenacity and leadership now......

It really depends on where they stay. I don't know which hotel LH stays in, but KL used to stay out at the airport and the route often went very junior as a result. If they're in the Galleria area, there's TONS of stuff to do, but not much of it is particularly unique other than being relatively inexpensive. I love it here, but I am usually in the minority among Americans (particularly when debating the issue with people from Dallas!)

Hopefully your friend and many others like her will remember this experience next time she books travel...WITH SOMEONE ELSE.

That way some of the strikers at least can reap the 'rewards' of screwing the customer in the form of a firing or furlough due to planes that their company cannot fill.

Not really, usually the crew coming in will get the rooms of the crew flying back. Now that crew will not fly, so where does the new crew get his rooms from, who will pay for the extra rooms and in case the hotel is fully booked where will they go????

Indeed, I was surprised to hear this news. You'd think these guys would maybe focus on keeping their company alive in the face of competition from the likes of Emirates. I guess their goal is to just fail more slowly? I sort of thought more highly of the Germans before this, to be honest.

Either way I would love to see an airline in the United States try to pull this sort of thing right now - cancelling flights, stranding passengers etc. Might not be too much of an exaggeration to say that folks would start rage-kicking the shit out of people in the picket line.

The reason for these "strange" parking events is simply space in transit areas at german airports.

All flights left FRA/MUC on tuesday and did not return. They would have arrived in germany on wednesday, after the beginning of the strike. With no connections available, no visa for Germany/Schengen, everybody would have had to camp in the transit area for three+ days. This was to be avoided. The crews were just on a lenghty layover, all paid. First flights back left yesterday, arriving in FRA/MUC on the first day afer the strike with almost the full range of connections available, space permitting. I will go home today, flight left FRA this morning on time and we take it back as usual, just an extended layover. I was lucky not to end up in places like THR or RUH or take your pick.

Agreement is, only flights ex Germany are strikebound, hence the returnflights on day 3 were operating.
