Largest Volume Routes With One Carrier

Sun Apr 06, 2014 5:34 am

What are the heaviest traveled routes with only one carrier?

Following are some that I've found. I'm sure these are not the biggest yet though. Some of the numbers from a city with multiple airports don't necessarily paint a true picture but I included them.

BOS-FRA on LH at 536000 pax
CLT-PHX on US at 490000 pax
IAH-CUN on UA at 539000 pax
AMS-DET on DL at 649000 pax
AMS-MSP on DL at 463000 pax
DFW-AUS on AA at 599000 pax
DAL-HOU on SW at 604000 pax
CUN-PAN on CM at 496000 pax
MCO-MIA on AA at 485000 pax
MAD-ALC on I2 at 428000 pax
BRU-FRA on LH at 450000 pax
MIA-DFW on AA at 547000 pax
VIE-DXB on EK at 450000 pax

VIE-DXB is served by Austrian as well.

SYD-JNB on QF could be quite a contender.
SYD-NRT on QF

DXB-MRU on EK?
DXB-MEL on EK?

I have no idea.
Durban. Melbourne. Denver. Hong Kong.

ORD - SFO on UA is probably up there for the US at least. I'm sure the Asian trunk routes will dominate this though.

Today there are 12 flights:

5 B757
1 B777
3 A320
1 B738
1 B739
1 A319

That's around 2,100 seats today alone - 766,500 per year at that rate. I know they've had it up to 16 daily flights in the past year as well.

I have no idea how many pax fly Auckland to L.A. every year, but with from 14 up to 17 777's a week, depending on the season, would have expected it to be reasonably large for a market served only by a single carrier.

I do not have exact numbers but I guess FRA-HAM and FRA-MUC on LH are on top of the list with more than one million passengers per year.

DUB-STN on FR at 677609 pax (2012)
LHR-BCN on BA at 610757 pax (2013)
BCN-BIO on VY at 507467 pax (2013)

Btw the data for MAD-ALC on I2 for 2013 is only 270318 pax (high-speed train opened in 2013... so those numbers should further decrease, and UX is starting MAD-ALC as well).

Emirates certainly should have a few of them. For instance:

DXB-MAN on EK at 768452 pax (2013)

DXB-JFK on EK at 645873 pax (2013)

DXB-LGW on EK at 620853 pax (2012)

None of them a "large volume route" so they would hardly be the object of this topic. Most (if not all of them) will be under 100000 PAX. There are dozens if not hundreds of long-haul routes with no competition.

Haven't got numbers but I'm sure BKK-CNX on TG will be up there. They have about 8 flights each way per day, various aircraft, including the A333, B773, B744. Must be lots of numbers. I've flown the route a lot, and almost every flight I've been on, no matter if it's 6am or 10pm is full.

These are all hub-spoke or hub-hub routes. LH would be hard-pressed to even fill a 757 based on BOS-FRA O+D alone.

I'd like to see who has a lot O+D tied into a route all to themselves (non-stop). JJ MCO-GRU is one of the top of my head but it has direct on GOL and Charter on Whitejets.

BOS-FRA on LH at 536000 Pax per Year can´t be possible. There is only one daily flight.

536000 / 365 = 1468,5 Pax a day.

Even if both daily flights left full every day of the year, it would still only be ~200,000 pax/yr.

Because we're talking about routes operated by *one airline*. DL, VS, AA, and BA all operate this route.

I'd imagine for the purposes of this conversation, codeshares and JVs don't count as "one airline" as long as different metal is flying it.

I might have one: DXB-MNL on EK!
Until late 2013 (when PR and 5J also entered the market), Emirates was alone on Dubai-Manila with tripple daily 77W. During the first nine months the airline carried 639,970 passengers, meaning that the whole year of 2013 saw some 850,000 on this route by Emirates alone.

I don't think anything mentioned so far holds a candle to Southwest DAL-HOU. Actual 2013 traffic 1,540,182 in 2013. That volume of traffic would fill five daily A380 round-trip flights 365 days a year to 86.3% full (489-seat version). Or 50 daily CRJ round trips to about 85% full. I think it will be tough to find a route with that volume served by only one airline.

The Honolulu-Kona market is a monopoly for Hawaiian now that Go! gave up the ghost, and that market carried 1,417,198. Hawaiian had nearly 90% of the market even with Go. Honolulu-Kahului carries over 2 million annually but Island Air has some ATR72 flying it against Hawaiian's frequent mainline jets so it's not a monopoly for them even with Go! gone.

All these numbers are of course onboard traffic...not O+D. But O+D is next to impossible to accurately get in most of the world as far as I know.

(I do note that the OP listed DAL-HOU but I'm not sure where that number comes from -- the DAL-HOU I posted is both was combined total onboard passengers. If these are O+D DAL-HOU number, then CLT-PHX doesn't fit at all -- O+D roughy 60,000 year.)

I'm wondering if the OP's numbers are total carried in a year but only in the actual direction described.

For example, AA flying 599,000 DFW-AUS in the southbound direction only would work out to 117 pax for each of the 14 MD-80s (give or take a 738 here and there) daily. That's a load factor of 84%. If you assumed it included both directions, the resulting load factor of 42% makes no sense. Those flights are always packed.

Why wouldn't you combine both directions? Strange set of numbers.

AF is the only carrier GVA-CDG-GVA. Total 674,117 passengers in 2013.

EasyJet operates GVA-ORY-GVA (the only carrier) and carried 265,062 passengers on that route in 2013.

Ok it sounds like I should make some clarifications. Most of my info for the original post comes from RITA or wikipedia (with bona fide references). Now I'm looking at some of those numbers again and I think because they come from multiple sources some may be outbound and inbound and some just one way.

And yes, my question was one city pair with only one airline flying it.
