Boeing offers two connectivity solutions for the 787-9 and it will become available for the 787-8 later this year.

The article speculates that the 787-8 is now too small for them (they added two A340-500s last year to boost capacity) so perhaps we shall see an order for two 777-200LRs or 777-300ERs.

As the 787s are already in Azerbaijan Airlines' customer configuration, they may be leased instead of sold.

Well they better find a buyer soon, the 1st 787 for Azerbaijan Airlines is LN 211 and should start final assembly by the end of this month and should deliver by early to mid September.

Boeing could assemble it as "vanilla" without customer options or interiors.. and store it. the customer options can be 6-8 month lead time items.

however the interiors are being built now so those pieces that are vanilla could be reallocated, and the customer unique probably scrapped. The airline is still on the hook for BFE they purchased (and probably ready to ship) which may not be compatible with other aircraft or later builds.. Some vendors would rework lavs and galleys for resale, but then there is a warranty consideration.

I'm wondering if the whole thing isn't a pricing adjustment ploy.

Both have made Boeing test flights but neither has made a customer flight yet.

VT-ANA was delivered in Charleston even though built in Everett, and the same thing seems to be happening with VT-ANC.

Well if they need more capacity the 787-9 offers some 20% additional seats and more cargo space for only a slightly larger trip cost.

And they already paid deposits for their two 787s on order.
