But Cameron left Buckingham Palace as PM so should have the PM standard security detail

The security surrounding the PM was scaled back considerably in 2010. Some may recall the day of the handover, the then PM Gordon Brown was driven to Buckingham Palace surrounded by motorcycle outriders etc, and the new PM David Cameron was driven from Buckingham Palace to Downing Street with none at all. There is security but its far less high profile than it used to be.

Don't forget though that Brown arrived as PM whereas Cameron did not. Vice versa the other way around.

The TV cameras only showed Brown's journey to the palace still as PM and Camerons trip to Downing Street as the new PM so I was comparing "like with like"
After all in the worst case scenario whats the loss of a PM or president ? there's lots of very keen people always wanting these jobs., its not like there's a lack of candidates.

I believe that British Airways have three 772s in their fleet, G-YMMG, 'MH and 'MO, that have especially adapted F Class cabin floor that allows the BA Royal Suite to be fitted.

The Royal Suite comprises two full-size single beds (one fitted each side of the cabin), an oak table(fitted in the forward centre of the cabin) with two chairs forward and another two aft of the table and a curtained changing area with two seats at the rear of the cabin.

Is there a public photo of this? I swear I've seen a bad one before, can't find it now...

There was also a switchover to new model Jaguars, Brown left in an old one Cameron was taken from the palce in a new one. The new one was more bomb resistant than the old so they may have tweaked additional security measures at that time.

The irony of someone from a country that still pays homage to a figurehead monarchy lecturing another country on pomp, ceremony and excess isn't lost on me.

The irony is that HM Queen Elizabeth represents over 1,000 of history, continuity and public service. She may be a "figurehead" but she is a much beloved one. Americans are fascinated by her. I think we still secretly would not mind having her as our "figurehead." How many people travel to the US hoping to see the president?

Isn't that because after needing a billion $ to get elected, the US president has a lot of people to thank ? The French president (not saying this because I'm French but because I found it really surprising) could only bring about 30 people to the state dinner given by Obama, while Obama had hundreds of movie stars and the like invited !

Are you sure it's not the president of the council aka the prime minister of Italy ?

Today - Wednesday - the RAAF takes over, flying the Cambridge family from Wellington to Sydney. I assume it will be the VIP 737.

Now this would make an interesting thread. I did not know the RAAF had a VIP 737. Can you tell us more about it?

They have two 737 (BBJ) as part of a total fleet of five Special Purpose Aircraft, operated by No 34 Squadron. Photo here:

http://www.airforce.gov.au/Technolog...F-PUCwx8SHyhbwLuI3DXQI1Jr2t6wx4AV3

And more about the Special Purpose Fleet from the RAAF here:

http://www.airforce.gov.au/Special_P...F-zGScue6UkHWAYgsCQP+EZdPEC8HsDjkk

"The Royal Australian Air Force has five Special Purpose Aircraft operated by Number 34 Squadron from Defence Establishment Fairbairn, Canberra. The Special Purpose Aircraft are comprised of two Boeing 737 BBJ (Boeing Business Jet) and three Challenger CL-604 aircraft."

Wiki also has an overview of the VIP fleet:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Australian_Air_Force_VIP_aircraft

"Royal Australian Air Force VIP aircraft

The Royal Australian Air Force has operated a number of specialised aircraft to transport members of the Royal Family, the Governor General of Australia, senior members of the Australian government, and other dignitaries.

The RAAF's current VIP aircraft are two leased Boeing Business Jets and three Bombardier Challengers which are operated by No. 34 Squadron RAAF and are based at Canberra International Airport. The Boeing Business Jets are custom configured Boeing 737-700s fitted with facilities such as conference tables, offices suites, secure satellite and communication capabilities. The two planes have a longer range than is standard for Boeing Business Jets. The Prime Minister regularly makes use of the aircraft for domestic and international travel.

Prior to the acquisition of the 737s, passenger-configured RAAF Boeing 707s tanker-transports were used. These aircraft were larger than the 737s currently in use."

Not that interesting really, RAAF No. 34 Squadron operates a variety of VIP aircraft for the Australian government including 2 737-700 BBJ's which are under lease, the most interesting thing about this is the BBJ leases expire later this year, so the government is going to have to the politically awkward taks of pursuading the voters that they should continue to enjoy millionaire class travel while telling the rest of us to tighten our belts.

I don't know how many of you remember back in 1973, then President Richard Nixon flew on a United DC-10 from IAD to LAX rather than burn fuel on AF1 during the first big gas shortage. That was a one off thing, though.

I have had former presidents and first ladies on commercial flights many times. Gerald Ford was a particular favorite as was Lady Bird Johnson. Mrs. Johnson ALWAYS rode coach and she insisted on paying for her beverages. A gracious and very charming lady.

An A358 would be perfect but Airbus don't seem to want to push through with it. In which case one of the test airframes for this could do nicely...    ...

Or, should the Exchequer require a competition to get the best deal, Boeing still have a few "teen" iterations of this.....

.....which they may be willing to price keenly to move...          ...with Rollers of course, whichever they choose.

So we on this board can move on from these speculative threads...and start new ones wondering about the bespoke outfitting inside.

Yes, but I believe he returned to ADW on Air Force One so the savings wasn't there...AF1 still made the transcon trip anyway.

BTW, the call sign of the UA DC-10 that carried Nixon for that flight was "Executive One".

That is true--they ferried SAM 27000 out and took him back to ADW. But it made for some good press at the time. At least i THINK it was SAM 27000....might still have been 26000.

I had never heard about the call sign change. Interesting little news item. I recall that they interviewed the crew afterwards and they were all gushy about how nice he was. How fast things changed.

Have to say that the NZAF 757's are fine looking aircraft.

Yes they are! IMO it looks as much like a fighter jet as it performs! I rate it to look better than the UK L-1011s (that I think have just recently been retired).

BTW I have been held up at an intersection twice in the last two days as the Royals drove past (both times I had pole position and got a good view). It appears that the Prince usually sits on the right... I wonder if this is some kind of Royal protocol?

It isn't hard and fast - Charles sat to the left of Diana in their wedding coach, presumably to give her time to get settled with that vast dress - but generally the protocol is that the consort stands (or sits) to the left of the monarch, as at the State Opening of Parliament.

It gets a bit muddied when they are out and about - or in less formal settings. Prince Philip often sits to the right of the Queen at the Highland Games, for example, although his more usual position is to her left. It gets really muddled at some state banquets when the rank of the state guest's consort has to be considered.

In cars, it also has a more practical purpose - it's quicker for the driver to get to the right passenger door if there's no one else around to open it and the protocol is that the one on - or closest to - the throne has rank.

The last fifteen or so photos of this slideshow are some interesting shots of the RNZAF aircraft used for the tour - interior and exterior - with some Air Force flight attendants:

They're all black and white.

That's to keep his right hand free to wield a sword. Or maybe not, as I believe William's left-handed.

Whenever the US President travels on a non-military aircraft, the call sign is "Executive One". When it's military, then it's that branch of the military followed by "One". (Marine One, Air Force, etc.)
