New/updated Livery For KLM

Fri Apr 25, 2014 6:46 pm

KLM Cityhopper will receive its final ERJ-190 jet on April 30. Word is on the street that the jet will have a new/revised livery. The story even gets better: this new livery will be incorporated in the whole KLM fleet.

I normally take those rumours not serious, but since it's you posting it im getting exited. Just hope the blue stays prominent. Not sure actually how you can improve the current livery even more. All around the world you spot KLM immediately, unique.

Dear KLM:

You are my favorite airline in the world. You embrace aviation and the love of flying more than any other airline I know.

Please, please PLEASE do not make a corporate blunder and adopt a livery/paint scheme that destroys your brand image by going with a "cost-friendly" or overly-simplified (or just downright fugly) approach a la Finnair, American, United, etc etc. Learn from the pros, aka Alitalia, Air France and Qantas....(but not on a financial basis).

Thanks, yours truly,

Hmmm, not too sure I like the sound of this. KLM's livery stands out very nicely right now, and is a real winner. If true, let's hope they don't do anything radical. An evolution, not a revulution. It would be a disaster if they did an Iberia and went Eurowhite...

It's only been a decade or so since they introduced their current livery. Why do they need to change/update it already?

When was the last mayor change in livery? Some 15yrs ago? That the dark blue line around the windows were removed. To be honest, although i needed to get used to it, it was a clever move to keep the klm blue as mayor part of the fuselage.

And about the white livery. Klm had it some 40yrs ago as wel, and i must say, it was a very nice livery indeed!
So lets see!

Maybe they'll do something similar to TUI Group and United (787s) and just make the top of the white swish, keeping everything else the same. That would be enough for me!

What would A.net be without a substantial portion of this community wringing their collective hands in angst over a pending livery change!

Honestly, no other topic produces the level of melodramic and hyperbolic posts than liveries. I know this is an aviation enthusiast community, so it's only natural to be passionate about the aesthetics of the industry, but please cite one instance - just one - where a livery was responsible for the commercial success/failure of the operation. While there have been instances where governments have intervened in livery redesigns (AI, BG, DT), to my knowledge commercial viability has never been a factor.
Look, it's been swell, but the swelling's gone down.

Well, if the update is of the kind they did about twenty years ago with the change of blues as seen between the two pictures below, then it won't be too different.

Back in 2002 it was already said that... The New KLM Livery Will Just Be A Small Adjustment (by Skippy777 Dec 2 2002 in Civil Aviation) ...however that was before AF became the owner. BTW, PH-BFI was the first to be seen in the current livery in December 2002.

I trust that KLM's marketing team is smart enough to know the strength of their brand and will be wise enough to avoid a (re)branding disaster. The current livery is not in any way outdated so I'm curious and slightly anxious what the update will be. A KLM tweet seems to confirm that the ERJ-190 will have a new livery ("We're exited about the livery of the next aircraft as well") but it doesn't mention if it's fleet wide. The last livery change in 2002 transformed the dark blue strip into a cheatline so perhaps this will take it a step further and eliminate the cheatline.

Most likely, the new livery for the wide-body fleet will arrive with the 787s in 2015, before being applied to the rest of the fleet.

Agreed. KLM has had success over the years, and a large part of that is due to marketing, pretty much anywhere in the traveling world you can say KLM, and people know what you mean, even though the branding isn't as direct as say "American Airlines" or "British Airways". KLM knows how to be remembered, and I highly doubt that they'd make the mistake of blending in by going eurowhite. To throw my hat in the ring, I'm betting no dark blue what so ever, and maybe a slight change of the tail design.

KLM's marketing team knows how popular their livery is. Its no coincidence that their blue colour means something.

I have to agree with you on this one. As a US resident, When I think of KLM, I think of their blue, the crown, the 3 letters associated with the crown - KLM and the Dutch. When anyone says KLM, the city of Amsterdam should come into mind.

in my mind, im picturing the new livery to maybe have some red in it kind of mixing in the Dutch flag. Nothing like Iberia or Air France. I really hope they keep the light blue!

Met vriendelijk groetjes!

KLM should keep as its own livery and still operating under its original name cos it's the oldest airline in the world. I don't want Air France to take over KLM and be "Air France" as the oldest airlines as it doesn't make sense at all.

There are very few iconic liveries globally. KLM is one of them. They own the sky blue colour, like Aer Lingus owns Green and Easyjet owns Orange. Companies covet colour domination. Think UPS - brown DHL - yellow. Coca Cola - red.

KLM would be crazy to radically change their livery. A mild contemporary refresh - perfect, wonderful. A total abandoning - unforgiving. .

Sincerly - a loyal AF KL flier about 20,000 miles away from Platinum for life.

Don't think so, as PH-BQO will be in the deco-bay as from May 5th, and PH-BQP as from May 12th...

PH-EXD will pass REC on 29th April and will nightstop at TFS 29-30th April, so, maybe, some local spotters/photographer can reveal something more before arrival at AMS ?

KLM changed its corporate font from Helvetica to Verdana a few years back but this has not been reflected in e.g. the "Royal Dutch Airlines" titles on the livery. So perhaps we are looking at a small change along those lines.

It took a while to warm up to the Toothpaste Green/Blue, but when travelling Internationally....it is instantly recognizable.

Hopefully KLM will keep it classy, and the light blue will continue to figure prominently!

Guys, don't get too excited, as KLM will - at the very most - make minute 'adjustments' to its livery.

Expect a change in line with the previous adjustment - see current and old type face of the word Cityhopper:

1. CURRENT versus 2. FORMER livery

So expect small changes only.

Personally I would hope that they return to the stronger and bolder DARK BLUE lettering of KLM on the tail. it used to be a much stronger statement of 'Look who is here'.

I really do hope they don't mess it up, but I do remember a while back reading that the airline wanted to incorporate the colour orange into their livery. So this might be the opportunity they have to do so, they anyway have orange subtly incorporated in the uniforms of the crew etc. I have a feeling it might be a significant change otherwise why go through all the effort of hiding the aircraft ?

KLM in Euro-White? It would be both typical of a European airline, and pretty awful, considering how the current livery sets that airline apart from everyone else. And please, if you decide to go bland, at least leave the blue in the cabin!

I was shocked to hear that they will adjust their livery as it is one of the best & most recognizable out there imho. Have to say the current livery does not appear as nice on Embraer & Dreamliner to be (because of the shape of the nose) then the rest of the fleet. Came across the following pic and I have to say it looks A-M-A-Z-I-N-G !!

If AF was truly running everything day to day at Amsterdam, then KLM's planes would always be dirty.

Sarcasm aside, the current liveries of both KLM and Air France are both subtle updates of older ones. Both cases are textbook examples of modernizing a brand without making radical changes to it. The powers that be know what they're doing.
