Are there airport built on disused landfill sites that is already re-habited? How did they make the ground strong enough for their runway?

New DOH is on a landfill and IIRC they had problems with the methane build up.

Substantial sections of DCA are landfill. Almost any U.S. airport adjacent to water (SFO, OAK, LGA, JFK, etc.) is at least partially landfill.

I could be wrong, but my take on the original post refers to building on top of a former garbage dump site, rather than truckloads of rock and soil to build up a new ground area. It does seem like a good idea to put an airport on top of a poisoned and otherwise unusable land, but I can see issues with settling and methane leakage noted in a couple of the posts above that I hadn't thought of.
Worked for WestAir, Apollo Airways, Desert Pacific, Western, AirCal and American Airlines (Retired). Flight Memory: 181 airports, 92 airlines, 78 a/c types, 403 routes, 58 countries (by air), 6 continents. 1,119,414 passenger miles.

While the poster might have missused the term as there are some errors:

However new airports over Garbage landfills are happening:

LGA received dirt from Rikers Island (a garbage landfill), but was not a 'garbage Landfill" itself, just really close to one.

I wasn't able to find any evidence that *any* of the other airports were garbage landfills.

A great deal of wharf real estate in San Francisco is garbage landfill, but SFO is not.

A portion of MRI here in Anchorage was built on the old landfill when they closed it in the 1980's.

Actually when they first built the airfield back in the 1930's a lot of people complained that they where putting the airport way the heck out by the town dump.

I wonder if EWR or any parts of it were. It was a pretty swampy area back in the day.

EWR is built on a landfill. One of the reasons for never ending construction / reconstruction of runways and taxiways, the ground is shifting all the time..

I understand part of Luton contains landfill, which has restricted the amount of areas available for building on the site

How about JFK? I know it's built on top of an old golf course, even that was built on top of cleared marshes. Or maybe Jamaica Bay was dredged and sand along with bottom refuse was used to support the weight?

LGA is NOT built on a garbage dump. It, and many other airports, is/are built on landfill....dirt/soil brought in to level a building site.

And...derogatory comments about LGA coming from someone with the name 'Ozark' is just TOO ironic to be believed.

How do we know the 'toothbrush' was invented in the Ozarks? Because if it was invented anywhere else it would have been called 'teethbrush'!!

* The nickname "La Garbage" was given to it by pilots, not necessarily reflecting the state of it's origins.

* "Ozark" is part of my handle out of respect for a former airline based in St Louis, MO which my mother worked for and
put food on our table for many years. After eating said food I....

* Brushed (and flossed!) my teeth, of which I have maintained the full set.

I am now rising above your personal attack by not telling any derogatory jokes about NYC, of which I know PLENTY.

The westside extension of Runway 27L at SBN was built on an old garbage landfill which had to be dug out and stabilized before it was done.

Yes, but there is landfill and then there is landfill which is garbage. I wonder if any of the EWR landfill was garbage. The New Jersey Meadowlands for years was one big garbage dump, so it's at least possible some of EWR is built on an old garbage dump.

ZRH was built on a swampy area, an old artillery range.

So there might be a few shells in the ground...

Meanwhile in Norway, OSL was built on top of clean ground water deposits laying just 5 - 25 meters under the surface. (The water is not suitable for drinking anyway, because of too high concentration of minerals)
