The Oneworld website already includes SriLankan Airlines in the alliance's lineup (I guess because it is already May 1st in some parts of the world), so it looks like their membership is already official:

Finally after a long wait. Can't wait see some kind of cooperation between BA and UL. That would be awesome.

Well I just completed a comparison of the three alliances with the most recent figures available. Just in terms of annual pax breaks down like this:
Star Alliance - 636.82m Annual Pax
OneWorld - 500m (incl. Sri Lankan and other additions)
Sky Team - 588m
So, OneWorld still appears to be the smallest of the 3. Let me know if anyone is interested in the file which also includes departure counts, revenue, fleet, RPKs

Yes please. I think by destinations it's 9xx for oneworld and 12xx for Star.

I suspect with the earlier arrival of QR into OW the incremental benefit of UL joining has been reduced by a handful of Indian cities served by them both.
In the long term as long as UL offer a quality of service that doesn't downgrade the level of service within the alliance as a whole then what harm is there in them joining? On the other side of the coin UL being linked with some major world wide airlines can only stand them in good stead and help them to develop into something stronger and potentially of more vlaue to OW.

Funny that you mention it, I was just on the CMB-HRI flight 3 days ago on UL'a A330-200, what an important route to the country that is. (is a 5hrs drive or a 30mins flight, take your pick)
P.S. UL also serve HRI from PVG, MLE, MAA, RUH and TRZ.

Congrats to oneworld, hopefully with an upswing in tourism this airline and it's beautiful peoples have a bright future ahead. I work with a large number of ex UL employees Nd cannot speak highly enough of every single one of them! Their professionalism, warmth and generosity is extraordinary! I can only imagine what the customer service on UL can be like.
I would love to see UL back in MEL, there is a large Sri Lankan popultion here, many of whom are quiet wealth and travel and all who travel back to Sri Lanka frequently. Also with growing high end tourism I'm sure even a three weekly service would work, and be built up. Especially with decent feed from QF. Do they have the aircraft for expansion?

I think the Srilankan community in MEL has ample options to get to CMB with SQ, MH, EK amongst others...

I flew them last year, Bangkok to Colombo, round trip.
It was business class. Services was sensational, rivaling Singapore Airlines. Food was only decent.
Planes were in good shape for the short-route.
Definitely an enjoyable flight. Good news for Oneworld.
