Virgin Atlantic At Hong Kong
What will be Virgin Atlantic's future plans for Hong Kong? I know they are mainly now focusing on North America ever since the Delta share but Hong Kong is a big money maker. Will they introduce a second daily flight? Is there a possibility that they will ever return to Sydney from Hong Kong.

Probably not a lot. They have an A380 on order and IF they do accept it, I would imagine HKG would be one of the, if not, the first destination. If they do not take the A380 (which they are rumored not to) then I would imagine the HKG route will go as it is for a while.

I would imagine it is profitable, however I do not think it is a "big money maker". The route is far too competitive to be a big money maker, although it would be a high yielding route.

They tried a second daily flight a few years ago. I think it was VS 202/203, or perhaps 203/204.. One of those! I do not know exactly why it was cancelled but I would imagine it wasn't as profitable as they had wished.
A second daily flight might happen again but not for a few more years until the current fleet turns over and they get some more new aircraft. The A346 is a terribly uneconomical aircraft and VS are trying to rid them from what I hear.

I have heard Sydney was not profitable and was there simply for the prestige. If this is the case I don't think we'll be seeing it anytime soon. The LHR-HKG-SYD-HKG-LHR was utilizing quite a few aircrafts at once too and VS must have felt that they could put the aircrafts to better use.

I presume their focus would be filling the 50% or so of seats that used to be blocked for SYD, so the SYD cut is an effective doubling of frequency to HKG.

If LHR-HKG is that high-yield route, why don't VS use the LHR-JFK config 744 to HKG? Forgive my ignorance but does A346 have more Upper Class seats than a LHR-JFK config 744?
I remember over 20yrs ago flying on the then new A346 to LHR and was one of the most enjoyable flights...

Because they would loose alot of cargo volume. Plus the A340-600 has 45 UPPER whilst the LHR 744 has 1 less at 44.
So they are already sending their aircraft with the most J seats to HKG.

20 years ago? Virgin 's 1st revenue A340-600 flight was on August 5th 2002.

The second flight used a pair of slots leased from UA, the lease term expired and the slots returned to United hence that's why this flight was dropped.

HKG is a good cargo route for VS, hence the 346 over the 747, but also its the kind of route where a 346 actually works (distance, cofiguration etc.) over a 747.
It'd be great to get a second HKG flight back, getting reward seats is difficult on this route and that tends to inform that VS is successfully selling many of the seats.

CX now operates 5 daily direct flights to LHR while BA also do 2 daily with one of them A380. Capacity-wise VS is less than 10% of market share.
HKG-LHR is now one of the trump routes for OW, indeed it's hard for VS to stay in the game.

Even with the SYD pax taking up a proportion of capacity to and from Heathrow, their Yields are poor already. Some of the fares offered ex Europe are amazingly low.
I can see HKG going to zero flights faster than two flights for Virgin. They have a substandard product to all direct competitors and inferior frequency.

Indeed CX has slightly more than that. 2 of the 5 daily flights are operated with higher-density 77W without First Class service. We call that sub-type 77G. Config as follow.
