Hi All,

As the previous thread has gotten quite long part 16 has been created to continue the conversation. The old thread can be found here A350 Test Flights Official Thread Part 15 (by SA7700 Mar 26 2014 in Civil Aviation) .

Apparently I was wrong, it's -54°C to +70°C.

This article also states "next 2 weeks" instead of "several weeks" for the duration of the stay.

A350 type certification is still on track for the end of August or early September. And the EASA will most likely certify the A350 with ETOPS 180.

http://uk.reuters.com/article/2014/0...rbus-group-a-idUKKBN0DN1FH20140507

Quote:
"We are still looking at the end of the summer," Patrick Ky, executive director of the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), told Reuters.

...

Sources say EASA's certification plan calls for 180 minutes ETOPS from the outset, but the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) may take a few months longer to consider the same level of clearance.

Is there a separate paint hangar for the A380s? To me that hangar looks like the A380 would be a tight fit in there. Also, sorry if this has been discussed before, but what livery is expected for MSN5?

Ground certification tests means less flight activity, nothing to worry about.

MSN3 stopped again after one circuit...

First time she went up as AIB43GG, she climbed to 8000ft, second time she did one circuit at 4000ft before landing and returning to the flightline.
Maybe some tech issue? *speculating*

MSN4 is doing circuits as well, 4 left-hand, a stop & go, and just finishing their 3rd right-hand. If they do the same as the first four then I guess since MSN4 is used for crew training, they are doing the circuits required to finish a Type Rating...

//Edit, disregard, just as I pressed Post message MSN4 vacated the runway..

The cockpit sections is made of a Alu alloy indeed, I believe it was because the metal better withstands a direct birdstrike

The cockpit section is indeed aluminium. Strength issues because of bird strikes.

The black and silver grid is protection from the VMU tests and the red (you might also notice what looks like very white section on the underside of the wing) this is aero paint.

I'd like to know also. I only know what I have read, and may have it wrong. I would have expected a plethora of replies to this one.
From what I can find out it is used for at least 2 purposes, and possibly a lot more.

First it is ultra-thin, ultra-smooth and ultra-light. Painting a 747 with it would save about a ton in weight, and looks great on a race car.

Second, it is used to study air flow over the surface. I presume the paint moves with the air flow, and "things" can be worked out from this.

In regard to the 350, the aero paint does not look ultra- good so I am presuming it is being used for the purposes of aerodynamic refinement.

Well I'm no expert but my understanding of it matches yours.

Aero (or "Flow Visualisation) Paint is used for testing and fine-tuning aerodynamics. It is basically a coloured liquid, similar to paint, that is mixed in various viscosities for different purposes, and which takes a very long time to dry. In normal use, it will either be removed from the surface again before it has dried, or will be formulated in a way that does not bond well to the surface if it does dry. It is used for a similar purpose to those stick-on tufts of string, but provides a much finer level of detail, closer to the surface.

Once the paint has been applied, the airflow is added (either via a wind tunnel, or by flying the aircraft, or driving the car) and what then happens to the paint is analysed to determine whether or not the airflow is behaving in the expected way. Often, the movement of the paint is videoed. Very detailed analysis will be done on where the paint ended up, how it moves, and whether or not it becomes "textured". Analysis is a very skilled job - most of us would just see a mess.

To oversimplify, I believe that the direction and length of streaks in the paint will indicate speed and direction of airflow, texturing will indicate turbulent flow, and patches of paint that remain unaffected indicate that the airflow is detaching from the surface.

My understanding is that when it comes to aircraft, flow visualisation paint is primarily used these days to test and refine laminar flow, especially around the engine nacelles, and on critical areas of the wings and control surfaces.

But as I said, I'm no expert. I'm sure that there are far more knowledgeable people here who can provide a lot more detailed/accurate information.

Following this website for ages and especially the A350 development forums, I decided that today was my turn contributing to the discussion.

Of course, I've to thank people like KarelXWB, Starbucks, Bycac, Pihero and so many other contributors for making this forum so interesting and complete in terms of info and pictures. I almost have the feeling working by Airbus and following the A350 its development from the inner

Today, on its way to Berlin, MSN4 F-WZNW made a little apperance at LSGG/GVA as AIB351 with a high pass first and then a go-around. This aircraft, which it was my first encounter with, is as described here, graceful and silent.

Here are a few pics from the go-around, sorry, mobile phone quality

Once again, thumbs up for all of you guys making such an incredible job keeping us all posted about the A350!
