Final AA 762 Flights May 7, 2014

Wed May 07, 2014 5:52 pm

Well this was announced a long time ago. But nonetheless, today is the final day for the 762 at AA. Guess it will be almost all narrowbody on transcon now. Also, I believe AA is the last passenger 762 operator in the US, so I would say this retirement is pretty significant.

Does anyone have any fond memories of this aircraft? I never had the chance to fly on one.

Also, is there any kind of ceremony that AA has planned for the retirement?

I believe the final flight will be AA30 (LAX-JFK). It leaves at 11:30 tonight.

Looks like N319AA has the honors for the last rotations. N332AA is the other one flying. I flew it a few months ago just to fly JFK-LAX on a 762, and I didn't think it would make the last day. It's last revenue flight should be just departing.

Sad to see them leave. A piece of history. Technically AA will still have the ex-US 762s, but that isn't the same.

Yes. As of tomorrow, May 8th, all JFK-LAX flights are A321s. JFK-SFO still has one daily 763 in each direction (AA85 westbound and AA24 eastbound), but will also be all A321 soon. How soon? At the latest by September of this year.

Quoting TwoFourLeft (Thread starter):
Does anyone have any fond memories of this aircraft?

Yes I sure do. I remember flying on it from MCO to DFW back in 1988 when the airplane was all new. Then a few months later I took my first TATL flight on a 767 ever, ORY-RDU, connecting on another 767 to MCO. Then in 1989 when I started college, I continued to fly on that airplane each summer and each winter holiday on TATL trips. Since then I have been taking many TATL trips on American 767s (hence my username) both 200ER and 300ER series.

Quoting TwoFourLeft (Thread starter):
I never had the chance to fly on one.

You still can. There are still 58 300ERs in the fleet, and US still has a few 200s left.

Quoting TwoFourLeft (Thread starter):

Yes it is. It arrives in JFK at 8ish tomorrow morning. I don't know if there will be ceremonies for that because it's only a specific variant of the type that is retired, the 300ERs are still in the fleet. Back in 1993, when American retired its last 727-100, I don't think there were ceremonies for that in particular because the 727-200s were at that time still in the fleet.

Technically, American still has 762s though now only ex-US 762s.

Definitely the end of an era. In a way sad, but necessary ... and at least the A321s are an incredible replacement from a product/service standpoint.

I flew on one of AA's 762s in July last year. I was too tired to take the registration and this kind of makes me curious about whether I flew on this last 762.

Flight was AA21 JFK-LAX on July 26, 2013

Can anyone please help me out?

Thanks!

The AA 762 was the first twin I flew TATL. Back in the late 80's I was living in Dallas. I got passes but had no time off, so I flew DFW-MAD on a Friday night, returning Sunday morning. Did the same to ORY and to ARN (connecting in ORD) on separate occasions. All on the 762. Fond memories of all trips.

Might be down to 7 now. N245AY and N246AY were retired a little while ago, and the one I've flown, N248AY, hasn't seen action for nearly two weeks.

N319AA was the one I was hoping to get a few months ago since it was the oldest. It left JFK just before my flight did, so I got some last pictures of it. Instead I got N332AA, so it's cool that those were the last two frames that made it to the end.

I was originally booked on the 11:35pm flight from LAX to JFK in F tonight. However, I switched to the 9pm flight b/c I really wanted to get a good nights sleep on the red eye to JFK. The recliners in the 762 F just aren't the same as the amazing new A321T. . .I suppose I can wave goodbye to her as I board my flight tonight.

...I definitely have fond memories of the 762. I flew F for the first time in 1997, LAX-IAD on this bird. The interior hasn't changed much since...

I'm not sure about that, because those are based in PHL. Though they could be transferred to JFK, as the A330s will probably be, during the AA/US merging process.

The 762 was my first widebody too- though it was with US on Dec 1, 2010 on AWE835 PHL-MCO, registered N253 AY. My second was an American 763- unknown reg in April 2011. But I haven't flown a widebody since, but I'm looking forward to July 2nd- the first leg of my journey to St. Maarten is PHL-CLT with the 762. Looking forward to one more good ride with the iron horse.

On a somewhat related note: every time I go spotting, I always see N253AY- when I first went to SXM, one of the first arrivals I caught was 253, and every time I go to PHL that bird always gets in my way!

So many memories watching the AA and UA 762s depart JFK from the Customs Building Lot. The only time I flew on the 762 it was actually N332AA SAN-JFK back in 2002. It's nice to see it was one of the last two left. Farewell!

IIRC the 767s inaugurated on JFK SFO JFK run around 11/82. I still have some photos at home of N301AA just a few days before EIS at the SFO Superbay!. Original configuration was 24F 180Y. I still remember my first flight on a 767, it was August 1983, AA257 ORD SFO, and I had seat 4A, right by the door!

This airplane carries quite a bit of nostalgia for me. My first flight on American Airlines was on a 767-200 from Detroit to Chicago, back in 1990.. At the time, they routinely flew these out of DTW.
My first flight to Europe was aboard an American 762, from Chicago to Zurich

I always found this bird to be a very majestic looking airplane.. Her proportions were just right. She will be missed!

Never got to ride on an AA 762 - but I almost did. I was based in Boston for UA at the time as an FA - in February of 2000. I had worked the all nighter in from SFO on a 757, and was turning around to commute home to SFO (we had a ton of junior people based at BOS because the flying was good and LAX and SFO were temporarily closed to transfers). I was trying to get on our 762 to SFO at 7am, but everything was full because it was the first day of "school break" - when all the kids get the week off from school in February. I stood by through all 3 of our 762s to SFO in the morning. And then the snow started. I went over to American and almost bought an ID90, as the agent said the thought I she could get me on their 762 to SFO. But that flight was delayed because of the snow, and I finally went back over and got on one of our 722s to IAD and then connected to SFO - and had to ride the jumpseat because it was completely full.

Overall, I worked UAs 762s on transcons constantly and miss them so much.

Word on the line was that Boeing poached some McDonnell-Douglas engineers from the DC-10 program for the 762. There were some clear similarities - most notably the coat closets with the mechanical hanger mechanisms that retract up into the ceiling. UA's birds had those - and I am assuming AA's did too.

I flew some AA 762's from DFW to AUS in the 90's. I am pretty sure they were 762's but some could have been 763's, I love both planes btw. And before AA cxld the route, which they never should have done, I flew one to and from ORD MUC in the 90's. I went Business Class and it was small and cozy. The FA's were able to dote on the passengers. I think there were 4 rows 2-2-2. I really liked it. They had First Class also, but I was quite comfortable in Business and well taken care of. I will miss them as well. I know the older planes are not as fuel efficient or fancy, but I agree with those who have said they are beautiful. That is very true. Bon Voyage N332AA and N319AA. Thanks for the memories and the safe trips home and to Europe.

Flew on an AA 762 in April 2010 from LAX to JFK. The flight was supposed to leave at 01:30 PM but was delayed for a couple of hours. I missed my connection (last flight of the day) to LHR because of that and was forced to spent the night at JFK which in the end was a nice adventure. I will miss her, it was a comfortable flight.

Flew an AA 762 ORD-MIA a few years ago. Had a window seat and the woman next to me was in the aisle. She was approximately the same age as me and was a total "rhymes-with-runt" to the FA's the entire time. Made sure to let the crew know that this heinous creature was not my traveling companion when I went to the lav.

From that point on (about 20 minutes into the flight) I was wined and dined by the crew while the witch next to me was virtually ignored. Great flight!

I still don't see the logic behind replacing the 762s with A321s. Sure, the 762s are gas-guzzlers compared to the A321s, but does AA still eke out profits by reducing the seat count from 168 to 102?

Such a shame I never flew transcon on these birds.

Passengers prefer a wide-body on a trans con--they have been in use since the early 747/DC-10/L1011 days and many feel like this is a return to the B707 and DC-8 days--only with more seats crammed in.

Let's hope Boeing gives the green light to the Y-1 concept.

Thu May 08, 2014 1:50 pm

I remember back in the hey-day flying AA 762s on DTW-ORD and DTW-DFW in the late 80s.
I remember flying HNL-DFW (DC-10) red-eye on a DFW-DTW on a 762 and getting hot breakfast in Y.

Unfortunately, they aren't the only ones, as DL and UA all are now running narrows transcon from JFK/EWR/BOS after previously running wides. Oh well...

DL still operates about half of their schedule with 763s on JFK-LAX

Lots of people "prefer" lots of things when you ask them in a survey. The critical question is which things they prefer strongly enough to actually pay for them. Put another way: Delta will now be the only airline flying twin-aisle jets between JFK and LAX - will Delta be able to sustainably charge a fare premium for that? I highly doubt it. The vast majority of travelers probably don't even look at the aircraft type they're flying on.

Yep. The 762 was a mainstay in lots of non-transcon domestic markets for years and years. As another example, I remember when AA flew them as a single LAX-DFW-RDU flight that fed the RDU-LGW flight when it was a 762.

It will be interesting to see how Delta responds to the evolving competitive dynamics in the JFK-LAX market. By this summer, AA will be offering 8% more premium seats than they were last summer, and 19% fewer Coach seats. Delta, meanwhile, will now be hauling around far more Coach capacity than AA or United - fighting it out with JetBlue and Virgin for that segment of the market.

I remember flying the 767 often between DFW and AUS ( AA made the local TV news when they started using 767 on the route). I remember when the FAA stated the 767's reverse thrusters could not used for a time due to an accident, made for some interesting landings when on a 767(hint, it has some AWESOME brakes) . It was and is a good aircraft, one that allowed AA to offer service to smaller European cities from ORD. Kind of sad, the 767 wore the AA metallic livery well, she will be missed.

Passengers prefer a wide-body on a trans con--they have been in use since the early 747/DC-10/L1011 days and many feel like this is a return to the B707 and DC-8 days--only with more seats crammed in.

No one I know (including myself) who has been on AA's A321T, in any cabin, would have preferred to be on a 762. It's a gorgeous and comfortable airplane--don't knock it until you've tried it. Don't get me wrong, I love widebodies and wish we still had more of them flying transcons, but the A321 is a step forward, not backwards.

In 1997, I flew a 767-200ER from SFO to ORD. The plane was going to continue on to MAN, if I'm not mistaken. That plane was so much nicer than the 757 I flew out to SFO.

I don't doubt that the A321T has a modern interior. But, it is so much easier to board and deplane a 767 with twin aisles. By the same token, the 2-3-2 layout in coach is one of the best cabin layouts. The number of middle seats is far less than with narrowbodies or larger widebodies. When you go to 9 or 10 across on a widebody, the overhead space fills up quickly.

Don't get me wrong--AA's A321 trans-con product is top notch. I had to smile about the overhead space--I remember the times when only coats and hats could go up there--people did not travel like they were moving to Siberia. One of our favorite tricks was to get a very petite flight attendant to lie under the blankets up there and when someone would toss a briefcase or bag up there she would toss it back down into the aisle. The looks on their faces was hysterical.

How big was the 762 fleet and have they parked these aircraft in the desert or sold them to other airlines elsewhere?

I loved the 767 when it first came out...I called it a semi-wide body because it was narrower than the big ones but still had the spacious air of twin aisles.

In November I flew a 767 JFK-LAX-JFK, and did the same trip in January, on the new 321, both in coach. The 321 is a really nice aircraft, and the extra legroom was great in MCE, but the seat itself was much less comfortable than the seat in the 767. I found that interesting. Also, the carts used by the FA's appear somewhat smaller on the 321, meaning more trips to galleys to restock...but that was pretty minor (unless you're an FA).

I have now been on the 321 about half a dozen times, most in business class. That I can say is night and day better than the 767...

AA appears on the right track with regard to product. I just hope Doug Parker doesn't mess it up by reverting to his old ways.

Interestingly enough according to FlightAware tomorrow's JFK-LAX flight 21 is showing scheduled as a 762

We will see how long that last. The first 757 with lie-flat seats is now in revenue service and has strictly been on the JFK-SFO/LAX routing. Once all the mods are done i'm sure we'll see a lot less 767's, if any, operating JFK-LAX/SFO.
