High Wind Warning In Nevada.

This sounds a bit intense. Winds from 30 to 40 mph and gusting to 60?? I wonder what that means for KLAS and nearby airports.

This seems about par for the course. I got my PPT flying out of VGT, so I am familiar with these windy days. For the GA community, it means no smog, great visibility, but no flying.

For the majors, it means landings like this:

Sounds like just another day at KLAS to me. See it all the time. I am sitting here in my third floor office in Henderson and the 45 foot palms outside of my office are swaying like they always do.

Local time here is 10:00PM. I am in Summerlin, which is about 10 miles west of LAS. The winds have been, quite literally, howling like mad for at least the last couple of hours. I'm sure it's making for interesting departures and arrivals at the airport tonight. Forecast calls for these high winds to last through tomorrow (Monday) evening.

Scratch that... I am still in my office in Henderson and the wind is shaking the building this point. Last time wind shook a building I was in like this was when I was riding out a hurricane in Florida.

I was in Vegas several years ago when there were evening winds like that. Walking down the strip was a major dust storm...it was during a lot of construction. They finally closed LAS until the next day.

I live close to KLAS and we just lost power, from looking outside I just saw a number of transformers blow, not a fun night for the power crews.

Las Vegas gets more wind than any city I have ever been in and truly is the "Windy City". I think Chicago should give up this moniker to LAS  ..They can try "Sin City" if they like.

Completely off topic - but a trade between Chicago and Las Vegas on "windy city" and "sin city" would be 100% appropriate.

I think a more appropriate nickname for Chicago should be "gun city"

I just drove all night back from Cathedral Gorge state park. I have never abandoned camping due to weather, but the winds there tore my rain fly on my tent, shredded it off. insane winds and a heck of a tedious drive 400 miles back to SoCal in a low profile Honda. I could see the truckers fighting it. Crazy.

Cessna 207 crashed short of the runway in Page, AZ yesterday….Page not far from LAS. Story, for what it's worth, mentions windy conditions at the time.

http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/d...rying-crash-lands-arizona-23671309

During descent into VNY yesterday while over the Mojave Desert the wind was kicking up some dramatic dust clouds. Most of the desert floor and valleys were obscured from above by flying dust…never seen that before.

A common misconception but "Windy City" derived from Chicago's Wind Bag Politicians. The term's reference to the city's weather might have evolved but was not the original intent…or so I am told.

There's always a few days like this in the spring every year out in the desert. LAS won't be the only spot with strong winds today. Here's the TAF at ABQ:

Chicago didn't get the moniker from the windy weather NOR did it get it from the windy politicians. Supposedly, the name was attached to Chicago from a New York newspaperman, when the composition was going on, between Chicago and New York. for the Columbian Exposition. He determined that people were "windy" because of all the bragging they were doing about their city, Chicago.

As for the windy weather in Nevada, is Harry Reid back in town? Could that be the cause?

It's always windy in Vegas. However, you need to go to El Paso sometime. That city gets extremely strong wind. I've been there in 50 mph winds before and it's not fun. Same with Denver.

It's blowing pretty good in Phoenix. My apartment has been shaking at times! Looks like SoCal is in for another strong Santa Ana week this week. Luckily I have some extra time in my schedule this week to make another beach run!

Having lived in the DFW area for 13 years I can attest that the area gets a lot of wind too especially in the spring.

Well, I learn something new everyday. I always assumed it was the winter weather in Chicago, that gave it that name. Now that this is clear and it is politically driven and that we do have Harry Reid, I now officially demand that LAS becomes the Windy City

Reid was one of the only politicians to vocally oppose the Bundy ranch controversy while other Nevada politicians lined up in support of the freeloader. I think it's time this viewpoint be re-adjusted to take off your political blinders.

The winds in the Eastern Sierra are pretty strong today. The wind gusts peaked at 127mph at the summit of Mammoth Mountain ski area today. Mammoth is @ 240 air miles NW of LAS.
I'm leavin on a jet plane. Don't know when I'll be back again....

Perhaps you need another media access over there in the U.K. BTW, when did you become the political monitor on this forum?

I doubt it. It's been grandfathered in since it started in the 1890s.

These all have some variations, but here is a list that is pretty close to reality based on the others out there: http://www.city-data.com/top2/c467.html

Chicago isn't in the top 100. You'll notice a quick trend. Cities in MA, thanks to be on the coast, and also in states like CO, TX, and OK are ranked in the Top 25.
