Air Canada's First 787 To Be Handed Over...

...this coming weekend. At least this is what is said in the Globe and Mail.

According to the online Wall Street Journal, the media will have a chance to visit it next Tuesday morning at YYZ.

Finally, almost a decade after AC placed its order for the Dreamliner, they'll receive the first. This is an important day in Canadian skies.

Yes indeed, it is being delivered Sunday, May 18. There are 50 lucky AC employees from across the system that have been chosen to go to BFI to fly back to YYZ on the delivery flight.
Unfortunately, I was not one of the 50!!

AC will put the 787 on YYZ-CDG as of 1 December 2014.

Also, an interesting article in La Presse today with Calvin Rovinescu about the 787 and a potential YUL-PEK flight. (sorry, french only)

It basically confirms the fact that lack of proper slots at PEK is one of the major hurdles for this route at the moment.

I'm due to fly AC HND-YYZ in September, and it's scheduled as a 787. Does that mean I'll be flying on the same bird about to be delivered, or will they have more in the rotation by that point?

Looking forward to the flight, and comparing it to the business class on the 777's I usually fly with AC on long-haul.

Does anyone know where they will be used at first? Will there be domestic training routes (like with the 777)?

I was booking a trip to Londin in June/July, and saw the 787 as an option for a while... though it was gone and replaced by the usual 777/330 by the time we firmed our dates and booked.

There was a flight originally scheduled YYZ-YUL-YYZ on May 21st, but that is no longer there. Are there any scheduled flights Domestic or N. America prior to the real overseas schedule?

First one this weekend followed by a second two weeks or so later but there are rumours on another site it got damaged by a forklift during seat installation. Extent unknown. Third one will come first week of July if not mistaken.

It will very likely see the same kind of flying the 777 saw on EIS. Some rapidairs to get sectors in for IOE requirements for crew as well as some YYZ-YVR-YYZ. Expect LHR as well. I'm not sure but it used to be that new crews even if ETOPS current would have to get ETOPS sector as well as a briefing during simulators. Seemed a waste of time. You could go right to left seat and still have to go through a sometimes very lonnnnng ETOPS brief. Yawn.

Either way it's an exciting time if not long overdue.

How was this handled when the 777 came in - were these flights scheduled in advanced, or just substituted on short notice?

From a scheduling prospective I'm not 100% sure. I would guess they were subbed at first and not sure how much lead time was given. Not much help I know. Sorry.

My guess would be that there would (maybe) be a couple rotations through YYC, just to familiarize ground crews. After all, they will need to have practice by July, come the BA 788!

The reply you're referring to was talking about BA service to YYC, not YYZ.

There will be YYC rotations, though BA has nothing to do with anything since they're not handled by AC.

It will fly first passengers on the 21st. To Halifax. Subject to change what with a new airplane and all.

Calgary will definitely see it. I wouldn't be surprised if it's the first airplane to land on the new runway.

Does anyone know what time or which part of the day it's supposed to arrive? Can spend hours at the airport (in good weather) anyway, but would definitely love to be there when it does arrive.

Simple answer is both happened, regular scheduled service and last minute subs, but it is the flight crews that mostly dictate it.

It was only until a certain number of 777's arrived in the fleet that they began going into service a few days after arrival on their intended routes and not on proving or training flights. First they will cycle the 787 trained flight crews through the aircraft on shorthaul flights so they have live experience. That means those intended for the first overseas routes, the shorthaul Rapidair filler routes, and the first airports to get 787 service. The first three aircraft will likely all go through some of this.
After that they will much more rapidly go into service. This aircraft seems to have about 6 weeks of proving before Haneda or TLV. The longer the flight the more they seemed to be scheduled in advance. I would not be surprized to see a few YUL flights before Halifax if they can be squeezed in.

Does anyone know the flight number? And just a heads up for anyone that doesn't know, 05/23 is closed until May 19th. The only positive thing I can think of from this is not being at the wrong runway area.

It's been reported on another website that YYZ-HND service will be operated with 777-300ER Jul 1 to Jul 14 (with 787 starting Jul 15). YYZ-NRT service (flights 001/002 originally on 77W) will be operated with 767-300ER aircraft via YVR temporarily during this period.

The 787 delays have necessitated AC to wet lease a pair of 767s this summer from Euro Atlantic. They will operate BOG, LIM, MAD primarily.

Unsure of the damage to 802 but it will be delayed as well. These last minute delays have seen AC run out of airframes for the upcoming summer push.

Glad they're bringing the first AC B787 to YYZ. For the B777, the delivery flight went to YUL.
I will be at Pearson to catch it, predicting they will use 33R for arrival.

Flight plan has been loaded. Departs KPAE 7:40am or so arrives YYZ 2:37pm or so. Flight is at 41,000 feet. The flight number is indeed AC7008. Arrivals will be on 6/24 with departures on 33/15. Doesn't mean that the flight won't request the reverse and land on 33/15. You will have to wait until they check in to Toronto Centre to know what runway they are slated for. Sunday afternoon on a long weekend it should be a bit quiet so you would think there will be room in the approach and takeoffs for something special. Too bad so many employees are on board or a flyby could have been in the works.

I was thinking about going out to see it come in however I don't know if I really want to drive to YYZ (somewhere I am 5 days a week already) without knowing whether or not I'll see it. Right now it looks like 15L and 24L are in use.

Hainan 787 landed on 15L just before, followed by a long gap, then the AC 787 landed. BA 787 landed on 24L just after the water cannon salute for the AC 787. LOT should be landing soon. The Hainan paint scheme seems to emphasize the stubby look, while BA and AC look slightly less. Look forward to seeing the optics of the 789 in person.

I didn't end up going out to YYZ this afternoon. With the weather the way it was, I figured I might be driving around in the rain trying to rush between a spot for 24L and 15L. I was following it in on the scanner and on Flightradar24. Hopefully I'll get a glimpse of it this week.
