Delta Impressive At FLL.

Fri May 16, 2014 7:27 am

Yesterday at lunch time I stopped by the aircraft viewing area at FLL. In about 30 minutes I saw a Delta 763 depart to DTW,
a couple of 752 depart to JFK and ATL and a MD88 depart to LGA. On the arrival side, 2 752 came in from JFK and ATL
and 2 738 arrived from CVG and LGA. An impressive show by DL at FLL.

As a side note is there any possibility that DL will ever start SEA to FLL to catch Asia, cruise ship and Alaska business?

That's only 4 arrivals and 4 departures.

Based on the week 12th-18th May 2014:

76.6% of FLL's seats are domestic, 23.4% intl

JetBlue is FLL's no.1 by seats (114,200) followed by Spirit (101,592), Southwest (99,298), and Delta (67,936)

JetBlue has 21.5% of FLL's seats, Spirit 19.1%, Southwest 18.7%, and Delta 6%

64.3% of FLL's seats are by LCC, 32.3% by network airline, 3.1% by regional/commuter, and 0.3% by charter

Top-five intl countries by seats are Bahamas (19,998), PR (16,054), Colombia (11,916), Jamaica (11,412), and Canada (11,104)

Top-five intl markets by seats: San Juan (14,696), Nassau (12,762), Port au Price (10,430), Bogota (6,248), and Toronto (6,286)

Terminal three has the most seats (166,497) and terminal two the least (74,944)

DL used to have a fairly decent focus city/mini hub at FLL. It is not that impressive these days with mostly flights to their hubs. WN, NK and B6 are all bigger at FLL. DL in the 90s and early 2000s used to be the largest airline at FLL.

Was it the fact that you were not expecting to see a DL 763 at FLL going to DTW ? OR 2 752 along with the 763 in the same day? Your complete post reads like you were more so surprised to see these large aircraft at FLL but surprise does not equal impressive.

But in all fairness it has been a while since we've had a thread about how much we all love DL.

For airline and destination purposes, SJU is in the gray area between domestic and international. Flights are considered domestic (hence why we don't need passports to travel to/from the states), but the destination isn't considered domestic.

It's pretty much the same case with Hawaii. So, it's perfectly acceptable that they consider Puerto Rico separate from the US.

Not a huge fan of DL but it's certainly good to see them making good use of my hometown airport.

I suppose that's true. I forget that there is a time of the year that Caribbean cruises are more the exception than the rule, and ships head over to Europe, or up to Alaska. If Caribbean cruises were as popular year-round as they are in, say, February or April, I bet Canada would be #1 or #2 (and FLL would be much busier than it is!)

Yeah, those seat counts posted were in May, and for example, looking up, AC has four departures today from FLL, two to YYZ and 2 to YUL. Each had 6 daily in March/April, and they were running on large aircraft (lots of a321s). In that period, I believe there were more seats to FLL from Canada than to MCO, which is very impressive.

This is DL normal daily operation its no secret that DL uses 763 on quite a few domestic routes. It's obvious that traffic between DTW and FLL warrants a daily 763 but impressive it is not, and really we are supposed to be impressed that DL is using a 752 on both the JFK and ATL routes? If you look at the history of those routes going years back you will see that once again this is nothing new it not like DL had RJ's on these routes and all a sudden decided to place a 763, and 752 on the routes. DL has been sending wide bodies and larger narrow bodies into FLL to a very long time.

AS far as the UA hate threads those don't bother me because most of the views on those thread have valid points and its no secret that UA has major problems some of which I've pointed out myself.

Don't get me wrong I know DL is a great airlines but if we are going to tell the truth why not own it and say this thread is for the DL fan club because for the past few weeks there hasn't been a everybody loves DL thread and the fan club probably was feeling a little left out here on a.netters. When did the norm (4 arrivals and 4 departures) in 30 minutes become impressive?

I was curious about this, because TPA is really close, I don't know which one is bigger. TPA typically has more frequency, but never sees widebodies like FLL on DL. But this fall, TPA is getting more frequency to ATL from TPA (increasing to 15 daily) but I'm not sure how the seat change is because I believe they are not operating as many 757s. That will put TPA around 36 daily, and TPA also sees DL connection and that is not included in these flights, while FLL does not. If somebody knows I would appreciate it.

What the OP failed to mention, was that in the same time span, UA sent 4 ERJ135 to EWR, 6 ERJ145 to IAH, 4 CRJ200 to ORD, 3 ERJ145 to IAD, and 3 CRJ200 to SFO. Due to an aircraft rotation, one of the flights to SFO was upguaged to a CRJ700.

From the OP,

I didn't mean to start a firestorm here...it is that I just moved to South Florida last September and I didn't realize
that Delta had such a large presence at FLL in years past. FLL certainly has a large operation that is impressive
Since tit is considered the secondary airport in the MIA area.

I was thinking the exact same thing. The cruise traffic is tremendous from Canada, mostly in the spring around 16 daily for AC. But I think it is very seasonally and once peak travel season is done, it levels off a bit.

Canada accounted for 162,555 passengers at FLL in March 2014 (6.6% of total passengers; 37.6% of international passengers). This is broken down by carrier as follows:

Air Canada 105,038
WestJet 31,730
Sunwing 12,959
Canjet 12,828

To get an idea of the seasonality of the FLL-Canada market: in Q1 2013 Air Canada carried 228,617 passengers at FLL. In the ten months to October 31, 2013 AC carried 443,569 passengers, meaning that just 214,952 passengers were carried in the seven months after Q1 2013. In Q1 2014, AC carried 272,903 passengers, up 19.4% on Q1 2013.

September is traditionally the quietest month for FLL, with March being the peak month. Total passengers increased 74% from September 2013 to March 2014 - international passengers increased 105% and domestic passengers increased 69%. International passengers accounted for 18.1% of total passengers in Q1 2014 (17.5% in March 2014).

Quoting [email protected] (Reply 3):
JetBlue has 21.5% of FLL's seats, Spirit 19.1%, Southwest 18.7%, and Delta 6%

I would dispute CAPA's figure of 6% for Delta. The carrier accounted for 12.8% of passengers in Q1 2014 and 12.9% in March 2014.

I find it interesting that Norwegian, ranked 17th at FLL in terms of passenger numbers, carries more freight at FLL than Spirit and is the fifth largest freight carrier (after FedEx, UPS, Southwest and JetBlue) overall at the airport despite operating just one daily flight. Furthermore, 90.8% of Norwegian's freight is carried inbound and accounts for 5.5% of all inbound freight at FLL. This makes Norwegian the third largest carrier of inbound freight at FLL after FedEx and UPS.

Too many statistics for a Friday night

Should have seen it about 10 years ago, hourly 767 service to ATL and Song running -> Just on DL!

Impressive! I would have loved to have seen that!

No firestom, and it's fun to reminisce. 15 years ago, when DL's business model was far different, FLL was a mish mash of L10s, 762s, 763s, 757s, and 727s with frequent service to BDL, BOS, LGA, JFK, EWR, ATL, CVG, and DFW. I think they may have even served NAS still too with mainline service. Comair had a number of flights to small FL cities as well. The 764 was bought for the FLL market essentially and as recently as 2005 they even had 777s occasionally in there. I don't think the MD11 ever went in there. They even had the one off early morning and late late evening tag flights to MIA and PBI, with continuing service to somewhere else. As others (B6, WN, etc) came into the FLL market yields went way down, and DL smartly recallibrated it's presence. As impressive as it is now, it was a scene back then.

Yes...flew that many times from ATL-MIA-FLL. It was interesting taking off on a 767 from Miami around 1:30-2am. I remember one time landing on the south runway from west to east at MIA - letting everyone off, then we took off in the opposite direction from east to west, turned north, might have gotten to 3,000 feet at best, then turned hard right and were on final for FLL.

Good times.

Why did DL try MIA-LHR vs FLL-LHR? If unconstrained by route agreement, could FLL-LHR have worked?

Know exactly the flight you're talking about. I flew it on the 767, 727, and L10. They also had two flights from BDL as recently as the mid 90s thatwent BDL-FLL-PBI and BDL-PBI-FLL. One was an early morning 757 (flight 455), and one was a midday ism 727 (flight 777). Also recall a same flight # 727 and 757 from BDL to FLL via MCO.

Good times indeed...

Well, back in the 70s, DL had at least 4 non-stops, daily, from ORD, competing with NW and EA........plus at least 2 747s to MIA (early 70s) and 2 L-1011s/DC-10s to MIA (later 70s)......Now, isn't THAT impressive?

The slot they were given could only be flown on MIA-LHR.

Anyone have the numbers and/or seats between MIA and FLL for DL. I know DL is larger at FLL but over the past 2-3 years DL has grown their presence at MIA. Moving the FLL-LAX flight to MIA and increasing JFK and LGA from MIA. During some periods the DL gates will have 5-6 flights at a time, only going to two cities  NYC and ATL. MIA gets a lot of MD-88s though.

CLEFLL won't be mainline much longer.

During that same time DL also flew FLL-TPA-LAX-SFO as well. For a while it was a 767, then downgraded to a 757. I think they even flew FLL-LAX nonstop for a bit.

Yes it is. Check the timetables; apart for a few weeks in the fall it'll still be mainline.
