DL 739 "Spirit Of Seattle" - Message To AS?

Thu May 29, 2014 11:17 pm

Having read the DL press release of 5 Dec 2013 regarding the 737-932ER named "Spirit of Seattle" which stated the official reasons for the name displayed in large lettering on N809DN...

I get the part about now-absorbed Northwest Airlines' long, illustrious history at SEA and DL's well-underway plan to continue growing SEA... could "Spirit of Seattle" also be yet another in a series of implicit messages to AS that DL plans to ultimately 'rule' at SEA, bumping AS as 'top dog' in the process?

I love how the DL-AS rivalry has superseded the "UA is Horrible" threads in frequency on these boards

Not unless they want to build a new terminal (or two) to match the gate and slot capacity AS has.

If DL is sending a message, they're gonna be sending it to SEA passengers saying that DL is committed to SEA. DL (and AS) have no interest in engaging in petty little disputes and hurting each other's feelings

BTW--aren't these AS vs DL threads getting pretty old?

Absolutely. It's fun to read, but I guess we probably should get used to it.

Delta Air Lines needs a "WEST COAST" station for its's Pacific routes. Delta is bypassing NRT more and SEA seems to fit the bill. Alaska Airlines is based in Seattle, however Delta is more interested in Delta's needs, not taking on Alaska Airlines. They both can coexist and everyone else can think that both airlines are trying to kill each other.

By naming one of ship 3809 the "Spirit of Seattle" DL is just showing their commitment to growing their presence in the Seattle market. Last month's issue of Sky Magazine (April) had a huge focus on Seattle culture. In the back of the magazine, where stuff like fleet information is outlined, there's also a "hubs" section, on which Seattle was listed.

DL is doing all things possible to show that they're serious about what they're doing. So yes, it is a message to AS. But it's also a message to passengers, shareholders, etc. That's how you launch a market. Will toes be crossed? Yes. But I still don't think they're doing things to specifically upset AS.

Spirit of Seattle has been a name UA has used on planes before. It's not new.

It's obviously a petty jab at AS, since Delta has nothing better to do with their time than name airplanes for the sole purpose of subversively chiding another corporation...

This forum cracks me up every day.

Do you honestly think they would do that to 'chide' AS? Or would they do that, like I said before, for marketing purposes?

Though I initially would disagree, I think you may have a point especially in terms of the focus of each airline's network at SEA (domestic for AS, international w/ some domestic feed for DL). Though it is certainly not an apples-to-apples comparison, an example in a similar vein would be the co-existence at SFO where UA continues to thrive on international flying while VX has carved out a domestic market to 21 destinations (to a large degree at the expense of UA).

Maybe they should name it the "Spirit of King County Transit" because DLs have all the comfort of an average transit bus. Been there, done that. I now look to avoid the 739s for long haul/trans cons. I guess AS has them, I have done SFO-SEA. A paltry 90 minutes compared with DLs transcons in the overheated sardine can. Love DL hate the 739.

The message has been loud and clear for so long I'm not sure anyone noticed.

UA is actually clawing back share in SFO for the first time in a long time, even with VX, who I don't think is particularly threatening to anyone. In SEA you have two extremely competent carriers going after very much the same market.

I think it's just the seat, which like it or hate it, is the wave of the future on pretty much all carriers. I still think I'd prefer the DL 739 seat to the LH 320 series slimline.
I don't take responsibility at all

I don't think UA is going to dislodge VX from SFO, which was the point of the analogy vis-a-vis this thread.

So if you're not flying DL, and obviously not flying AS because they're all 738s and 7396s, who are you flying?

Yup, Really Old! Had this post been presented as DL paints A/C in Spirit of Seattle livery with no mention of AS, there would be less that could go wrong with the thread. IMO.

In lieu of starting a new thread this seems like the appropriate place to publish three pix from DL inaguaral flight back to JNU (Juneau) last night (Thursday) after a sixteen year hiatus. The DL 757 received a water canon salute and DL made a $10,000 donation to the Juneau Community foundation http://juneauempire.com/local/2014-0...and-we-have-touchdown#.U4imcijmQa4 Courtesy Juneau Empire

Because the airframe is a RON upon arrival in JNU a wishlist item for better aircraft utilization would be for DL to add one JNU-ANC-JNU flight before the 757 flies back to SEA the next morning.

I flew this plane to Florida from Atlanta a number of weeks ago. If they are using this particular 739 to make a statement to that market, DL is sending it to the wrong places (albeit, I do have a cousin in Seattle).

IMO, I think the answer is much, much simpler than this being a eye-poke to AS, and was never intended to be that anyway.

It is simply a way of acknowledging the fact the aircraft was BUILT in Seattle (Renton); it pays homage to the city and its long and distinguished history of Boeing airplanes being built there. Because...

I was thinking the same thing. I one time, UA had names their B762's. There was "Spirit of Denver", "...Chicago", etc.

And didn't WN at one time or another have a plane names "Spirit if Seattle" as well?

DL's behavior is all the "message" that AS needs. AS has read that "message" loud and clear. This is not a "message" to AS. I assure you that the management at AS is already well aware.

If that's the case they did a half ass job. Here's the proper way to pay homage to Boeing and the PNW.
