Fri May 30, 2014 10:01 pm

Is SR111 still intact under the TSB's auspices?

Are you sure "intact" is the correct word ?

It was reconstructed like TWA 800, which still exists. I'm curious if this one does too.

Any pics? I have seen tons of pics of the reconstructed TWA 747, but never even knew the MD11 was as well.

I know they did a partial, mainly of the cockpit to determine what happened in there during the flight. You can see shots of it on either of the documentaries about the investigation. Would be impossible (and a waste of time) to reconstruct a plane which, to put it bluntly, was turned to confetti.

Check out this thread for a bunch of pictures, including one of that cockpit.

It was only the recovered parts of the nose section that were reconstructed on a framework. These photos are from the Canadian TSB accident report:

The TWA 800 reconstruction is used as an instructional tool - both in how to examine wreckage and how to learn from that; and also how to reconstruct wreckage.

The Swissair 111 cockpit could also be a valuable training tool.
