American Eagle E175 Winglets

Mon Jun 02, 2014 2:17 pm

I was at ORD this morning and saw tons of AE ERJ 175's (they seem to be taking over at ORD), and noticed that there are two different variations in terms of winglets. Most had the more traditional straight up in the air winglets while a few had the new style hat appear longer and less straight up and down. My question...they are all pretty much brand new aircraft, so why the two different winglets? What's the difference?

The YX 175's started flying under the American Eagle brand last August with new frames. N401YX - N424YX are the "old" style 175 and N425YX - N428YX (latest delivery) are the new 175's with different winglets and LED beacons and navigation lights.

The aircraft you're seeing with the gigantic, not straight up and down, winglets are the new "enhanced" E175s rolling off the line. Embraer says the improvements they've made to the aircraft lower the fuel consumption by 6.4% compared to the OG E175.
That's not how this works! That's not how any of this works!

Very interesting. Any plans to offer a retrofit for original E-175s?

All the Republic AE e175's will get the new winglets.
What is it? It's A 747-400, but that's not important right now.

As will all skywest 175s, in fact skywest was the first carrier to take delivery of the new winglet 175.

Will only the E170s and E175s have the new winglets? What's with the E190s and E195s?

Probably the "yet to be named" airline that will get the 175's will have that feature. I don't know if there is a Supplemental Type Certificate for the mod for the older aircraft.

Saw one of the newer winglets in PHL when I was spotting on my birthday. Boy are they huge! Its a shame I didn't have my camera ready.

The e170 is no longer made, only the 175, 190, and 195. On a technicality, Republic is the first to put the new windlets into revenue service, more than 2 weeks ago. Skywest and Mesa just this week started revenue service.
As far as the UA 170'S and DL 170/175's getting retrofitted that will depend on if UA or DL want to pay for it. The regionals won't.

Hopefully they won't do it to the E-190s. It would ruin their beautiful lines like it did with the E-175s. Well I fully agree that the airlines should do what is most economically feasible and beneficial and I applaud Embraer for finding another way to improve the performance of their planes for their customers, the new winglets look gaudy and just don't fit the looks of the Embraers.

It will be interesting to see what happens to the 20 Republic 170s that have been flying for US. That contract is up in Sept. 2015 and between the cost of repainting and more efficient 175s being available, I wonder if some of the 60 175s AE is placing might wind up replacing the 170s.
