Etihad Cut Ties With Skytrax

Sun Jun 08, 2014 10:15 pm

Passengers can no longer complain or give praise to Etihad on Skytrax.

"It appears Etihad has come to a conclusion and issued this statement today.

Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, has sent a letter to Skytrax formally announcing its decision to withdraw from Skytrax, including the Skytrax World Airline Awards and the Skytrax Audit.

The decision was made after Etihad Airways carried out a review of the criteria and measurement of the Skytrax Airline Rating System.

The measurement of customer satisfaction and feedback is important to Etihad Airways".

Etihad are not even permitted to be mentioned on pprune, so litigious are their lawyers.

Way to go. I hope THAI and others would soon followed.
Qatar isn't 5 stars. Cathay is a hit or a miss (5 stars)?
Malaysia and Asiana has unfortunate events regarding safety and communications.
Let's just blame it on yields.

Anyone can be 5 stars with the right pockets lined. But good on EY, I treat Skytrax with the same disregard as Tripadvisor.

Quoting questions (Reply 1):

Nah, they have millions of people reviewing airports and airlines.. For sure that could never be a hoax

If airlines would only ask Skytrax who these reviewers actually are.. For the airlines it's only marketing and since the big airlines and airports are mostly rated 4 or 5 stars they would never start to complain. They pay Skytrax and keep their mouth shut.

People who did review certain 5 star airlines but in a negative way because they had bad experiences saw their review never published. Skytrax is about money and their - how many - minutes of fame.

Personally I think not one company or site should be allowed to give awards by themselves. It should be done by the industry by that I mean not only Skyrax, but also Tripadvisor and all the other big sites. Put all reviews together and then name one airline and one airport as the winner.

Skytrax has been used predominantly as a PR tool.

Customer Research does not depend on this fo product/service improvements. Most airlines resort insights generated through proprietary data collected internally as well as on industry reports published by the likes of IATA.

Not a hoax as such. But their overall ratings are suspect. Like Tripadvisor you can read logical well balanced reviews, or the ravings of a looney ("The airport had no transit lounge and the food court was bad, so I will never fly with X airlines again")

However I know of 2 occasions where a 5 star rating given to a particular airline was published as a 4 star rating. Obviously Skytrax edited the rating to suit their own system.

Let me guess, Skytrax didn't award EY 5 stars so they throw their toys out.

I agree with the comments about Skytrax but I can totally see it happening like this!

I'm not sure it's garbage, but the reviews are often less than objective, especially those ranting about IROPs that are not resolved according to one's wishes. That said, much of what I read is spot on. It's a bit like Tripadvisor in that regard. In my book, though, it should be the customer ratings that determine the number of stars and not the company itself. Who knows whether or not the current rankings are bought?

Tripadvisor is a wonderful tool, if only to choose hotels and to discover some attractions. But by seeing in your profile that you are a "Personal Travel Counsellor" I can understand your disregard for Tripadvisor

The number of stars given to an airline on Skytrax is irrelevant, but if there are several dozen reviews for a would be traveler to read, it can be useful. It is up to the traveler to filter out the illogical issues some customers raise and focus on the repeated complaints/accolades mentioned in several posts.

Of course, this only works if Skytrax doesn't edit/filter reviews to suit its agenda.

Oh well... I guess they want to silence their customers, just like they, and other ME carriers silence cabin crew from speaking out about their poor working conditions.

The way QR, especially, still treat their crew still sends shivers down my spine. Boycott, I say!

Whats funny with skyward is often there is a difference between the official star ranking of a carrier to the one based on customer reviews.

For example with Etihad, they are a 4 star airline, but based on an aggregate of reviews they get a 6/10 or 3 stars.

SQ are a 5 star airline and based on the reviews they get an 8.5ish (not too clear) and it states 4.5 star. So this seems much closer when you take into account all the people who give terrible reviews based on the slightest thing.

QR are 5 and 4

EK, QF, NZ and BA are 4 and 3.5

CX 5 and 3.5

UA actually match at 3 and 3

And for a real difference look at Air Koryo. Officially 1 star and based on reviews it gets a 5.5. Or 2.5 - 3 in the star system.

So while these star rankings mean absolutely nothing to the quality of the carrier, it is important for there to be places for such reviews to be made which is why I think it's wrong for EY to be able to isolate itself from the system. I also don't agree they should be able to ban themselves from Pprune.

in fact, there are two rankings with Skytrax which leads to the confusion. One is the passenger award which most of the times is advertised by the airlines and there is another one carried out for since 1999 based on professional and independent review (star ranking). Of course, you may start a discussion now how "independent they are; however, there is no other mechanism and organisation established to asses the airlines/airports. Still a very critical topic by all means!

Tripadvisor and Skytrax reviews written by the general public are often rubbish, you'll see an otherwise satisfactory experience knocked down to one star because "the flight arrived 30m late" or "housekeeping didn't change the hand towels on one occasion."

In my opinion, the value in these websites are simply that there is a large collection of reviews from which one can establish patterns. If you read twenty recent reviews, and each mentions that x aspect was terrible, it's a pretty good bet that x aspect is indeed off the mark. Individual reviews should be taken with a grain of salt, but the sheer volume of responses can be useful in many situations.

Could not agree more!!!! That site is very suspicious to me. If it's legit, it is full of whiners.....especially those who complain about Spirit and them not knowing about the fees ahead of time. So, that would equate to, perhaps, an uneducated base of participants. Those that do participate seem to find something wrong constantly, and I strongly suspect there is a built-in bias against some carriers. This is a great move by ETIHAD.

I tend to book with airlines based upon reviews I find on here, if you're looking for an honest review about an airline, I tend to think that airline nerds are the best people to ask.

At least most of think the same way and don't lose our minds when a flight is delayed 30 minutes as I have seen on Skytrax.
