DAB Plane Crash

Tue Jun 10, 2014 2:49 am

Local Orlando news reporting a plane crash at Daytona Beach Intl (DAB). No details on size of aircraft could be GA or Airliner. Anyone have details?

Assume they are separate accidents?

Yes 2 separate accidents. Local news just stated DAB was a Cessna 172 with a student pilot and instructor.

Plane crashed about 2 miles from my house. I pass right where it went down on my way to school every morning. So sad, friends and I listened back on liveatc and their last transmission sounds frantic and could barely make out the pilot saying something about "rough" and "turning back". Who knows at this point, we'll learn more when the NTSB arrives tomorrow. I found it rather ironic that the plane crashed right where Riddle has their crash investigation course.

So that's what all the sirens were last night. The accident occurred just 1/2 mile from where I live, and I pass by that intersection every day while going to school and work.

RIP to all victims in both crashes.

Im not implying any kind of link here as much time has passed but thought I would pass along the observation.

I used to rent aircraft from Phoenix East many years ago. I switched to renting up at Ormond due to dissatisfaction with the aircraft operated by Phoenix East. I recall once rejecting two aircraft on pre-flight only to have the brakes fail on the third aircraft on taxi out at DAB. It was the last time I ever rented there and quite frankly at the time I wouldn't take any of their planes on a cross country. I'd fly them locally though as in those days there were still airports and suitable fields galore around the local practice areas.

Disclamer

Again I am just making an observation on long past experience with this operator. Im sure that things have changed since then and am in no way asserting that this accident is any way related.

Looks as if they just acquired this bird in April 2014.

Did the airplanes come from the same airport? If so then sabotage or bad maintenance must be suspected.

They didn't, but why would you suspect that even if they had taken off from the same airport?

Why? Because 2 crashes from the same airport hours apart is suspicious. Either bad maintenance or sabotage, fuel contamination. That would be the obvious question to look into.

The C-172S had just taken off from runway 7R (the training runway) headed east. It was a Phoenix East aircraft which, according to reports, was doing touch and goes. For those familiar with the area the crash site is at the corner of Bellevue and Clyde Morris. The aircraft was oriented to the NE and had what looked like char marks from the fire. Very sad that the accident claimed both pilots lives.

The South East ramp, which is separated from the end of 7R by about 60', is where the aircraft we used during my flight training are parked and most of my take offs and landing were done from 7R (this was back in 2001 and on) so it was definitely a sobering sight.

If they were from the same FBO and maintained by the same group of people it might be suspicious, but DAB has four or five FBOs, all with different maintenance people and fuel providers, so you really can't draw anything from the airport's involvement.

Sad news to hear about both accidents. Hopefully the cause of both accidents are solved so all can learn from them.
