Peoria Continues Record Pax Tally In 2014!

Wed Jun 11, 2014 3:11 am

Two media outlets are reporting record passenger numbers at Peoria, Illinois' Gen. Wayne A. Downing Peoria int'l Airport (PIA) for April and May.

Highlights are that March 2014 gave PIA its biggest month ever with 59,021 passengers. April and May figures totaled 112,153. The three months together represented a nearly 7 percent increase over the same period in 2013.

The 2013 passenger tally was itself a record 592,101 passengers. If the trend continues, PIA will most certainly break the 600,000 mark in 2014.

Hopefully, airlines will notice and phase in larger regional jets in the near future and/or consider additional flights and destinations.

Very good. I get to PIA only once or twice a year since a project I was on has been pretty much completed. I was there last week and both inbound and outbound the terminal seemed like things were much busier than earlier visits.

If this continues I wonder if new cities will be added. I wonder if there will be PIA-IAH and/or PIA-CLT?

Without Airtran at BMI, there is no reason for Peorians to make the drive down I-74.

I'd be surprised to see PIA-IAH (on UA) but PIA-CLT (on AA) does seem likely in the near future.

I'd guess CLT service wouldn't start until after full integration of AA and US, though. And if PIA gets such service, it would start an AA vs. DL fight for Central Illinois-Southeast passengers.

Except for G4 and F9 to SFB and MCO, respectively. Would be nice if PIA could snatch one of those in revenge for BMI snatching FX

And CR9's to Atlanta instead of CR2's   I am surprised DL has upgauged those flights yet out of PIA.

I will give you G4 to SFB for increased F9 service to DEN and MCO

It will happen eventually. I noticed BMI isn't getting DL mainline (319s) this year, nor is MLI. Those must have been spare aircraft in 2013, but needed for growth at other markets in 2014.

Deal! Although I can't see F9 increasing BMI-DEN service from quad-weekly to daily anytime soon. UA's 2nd daily PIA-DEN roundtrip didn't last long and AA's BMI/CMI/PIA/SPI-DFW routes seem to be Central Illinois' primary western connection (totals 8x daily roundtrips).

I noticed Frontier Airlines' route map shows BMI-MCO as a seasonal route. Must be suspended in late summer? Can't see any increased service with G4 running 2-weekly BMI-SFB. Perhaps F9's new IAD "focus city" might someday include a BMI spoke?
