Boeing 777 Turns 20!

Thu Jun 12, 2014 6:34 am

On June 12, 1994, the very first Boeing 777 took the skies. Hard to believe it has now been two decades!

She's a beautiful bird! My first 777 flight was on a United 777 (blue/grey livery) from DEN to IAD. I was sitting up front, and I remember looking out the window back toward the engine - I couldn't believe how huge it was. It seemed like it could easily swallow the baggage tractor parked in front of it! Good memories... -ir

Wow !! Really!!! Oh boy we are getting old.
I was living in Seattle at the time and used to watch its maiden flights return to the Boeing field from my apartment. I would have never thought one day TK would be flying 15 of them and have 20 more in the order books.
Congrats to Boeing and 777 program !

Amazing how time flies…….

I first saw a 777 at LAX on 1Apr95 when it was doing an ETOPS -test flight.

I had my first flight in 9Sep95 and many more since. The aircraft was designed built and delivered according to the schedule at launch and is still selling really well. It seems to be a really solid aircraft with much fewer issues than the 787 and 380 to mention other recent programs.

Delivery of B-HNL to CX was not until 6Dec00.

First flight was on 12Jun94.

Happy Birthday Boeing 777!

My apologies. B-HNL was built on June 12, 1994 (according to ATDB). GE engines refitted to RR engines Nov'00, so delivery to CX in Dec'00 as The777Man indicated.

Closing in on most successful widebody ever? Is it close?

This is something Boeing got very right. And when you thought it couldn't get anymore successful, the -300 came.

I first flew on one with EVA from LAX to TPE. It is a remarkable, if somewhat noisy, machine.

Boeing: you got this one right. I hope the 797 is built with the same philosophies of design, parts sources, and engineering as the 777, and that you learnt from your mistakes with how you tried to make the 787 a kit plane.

Happy Birthday 777    My favorite twin of all-time. My 1st 777 flight was a DL 777-300 ATL-CDG on January 16, 2006. To add the the coolness, the aft section was very lightly booked, so I had an entire row to myself. I still wonder who DL got their 777-300s from, as well as who took the air frames of DL's hands.

I remember seeing the unveiling of the first 777 delivery on the Today show. I was a kid. It was the first time I've seen a cabin configuration with LCDs mounted on the backs of each headrest. It seemed like the future.

20 years and only 2 fatal accidents (I know, MH370 is still missing, but at this point, it's unlikely that anyone is alive). How many other aircraft can say that?

I was tallking about the 777-300 non-ER - which they most definitely had back then (January 16, 2006) ATL-CDG-BOM.

Not having much luck with Google or Wikipedia for proof. While I'm no expert, I am not a layman, either. I guarantee you I was on DL paint - ala "Wavy Gravy", on a Boeing 777-300 non-ER.

Perhaps DL codeshared on an AF 773 back in '06 on that route but definitely not their own metal.

Look in the airliners.net database. Check some of the other airliner websites....trust me, you won't find one.

Ok, foot-in-mouth time   . It had to have been a 777-232ER. I looked at some photos here with corresponding (close enough) dates, and am now completely embarrassed. Apologies for the brain-fart. Had to open up my door it stinks so bad    .

The A340 has been in service about 2 years longer than the 777 and has had no fatal accidents.

And 2 of the 4 members of the A320 family (A318 and A319) have had no fatal accidents, and the A321 has only had one.

I remember seeing the Very first United 777 going through Portland, our UA pilot pointing out Boings latest and greatest to us pax. I never had the chance to fly on one until last May 2, ELY 006, LAX to TLV on "Galilee". Then two weeks later home on "Sderot". Up until then the longest flight I have been on was close to six hours, fifteen in coach was pretty intense. I find it simply amazing that an aircraft can travel that far, with that much cargo(it was full) day in, day out none the less. An amazing aircraft, no doubt!

Time flies and WE ARE OLD!

My first 777 ride was on a gorgeous Alitalia -200ER, Milan-Miami (EI-DBM) in 2004. Love at first sight.

I remember AZ was one of the only carriers with the 'new' GE-90 engines on their 777-200ER. I boarded the plane through air stairs, L2 door... I was astonished at the size of those babies. Today, it still is my favorite airplane and engine... unbeatable!

I remember heading to LHR specially to see the new Boeing in 1995. My dad had an old friend who was interested in planes, I remember taking him on the tube to the Queens Building. We saw both BA & UA.

I have yet to fly the 77W, but am not too worried, they will be around for a while. I have the LR though.

Thanks for this, I have been looking for it for a while, it was one of those wierd facts stuck in my head that the GE90 is about the same diameter as the 737 fuselage. Are their any head on side by side shots out there?

Such a nice airplane. I hope I can fly on one someday.

As for the 77W, I'm ticketed for my first flight on one in a few weeks on AC (also get to check off the LH 748 on that trip as well). I already flew one of their 77Ls back in December.

Long live the 777. It's not often that a plane is not only delivers the hands down best economy and performance, but also is objectively the best looking too. They clearly knocked it out of the park with this one. Congratulations to everyone who was part of this masterpiece.

The A340 is pretty good for that one. Zero fatalities, IIRC.

You could be forgiven for mistaking a 764 for that too. Those did have the wavy livery at one point, raked tips and are very similarly proportioned to the 77W. And that's fair even if you know a little more about them than a lay person. Neither of my girlfriends can tell those from a 777, and that's with one of them working in Commercial Aviation.

Better make sure you're in at least Y+ for that one. Their Y product is an appalling disgrace (unless you hate your legs or live for hurting yourself or something). Given how much a south pacific journey costs both in time and money, I'd honestly look elsewhere. On the plus side, at least its 9 across, so... there's that at least.

We never thought or expect Air Canada to switch the renewal wide body fleet from Airbus to Boeing. It was nice to see AC join other airliners ordering Triple Sevens especially the only North and South American carrier to operate both 77W and 77L. Happy Bday Triple Sevens.

Which one?....I don't recall.
