MRJ’s Fuselage Joined With Wings (with Pic)

Tue Jun 17, 2014 5:33 pm

Mitsubishi Aircraft has completed the wing-body join of the first MRJ regional jet test aircraft.

The mating of the wings with the aircraft’s fuselage took place at the company’s Nagoya Aerospace Works factory, says Mitsubishi in a statement.

“The wing-body combination marks another major milestone toward MRJ’s completion,” it says.

Following the successful wing join, Mitsubishi will attach an engine pylon from Sprit AeroSystems, and subsequently mount the Pratt & Whitney PW1200G engine it received recently.

Interesting news, perhaps FF will be in 2015 after all.

I hope they ordered more than one

That's a nice looking Bombraer ERJ-900 right there.

I don't think a FF within the next 18mo is outrageous.

Usually you can get a discount buying more than one item at a time though.

Ahhh, a retailers' favorite line. It's not cheaper to buy 2, 10 or 100 vs. 1. The cost/unit goes down, but the price goes up.

But what i was trying to say is it's even cheaper to buy a bunch of planes with the one engine option.

I'm looking forward to reading a.net community's collective input on how similar it looks like to other aircraft, or not

Congrats to Mitsubishi. They've had a tough learning curve. The reality is that making a modern commercial airframe is a challenge. But they are doing *far* better than how they were a few years ago. The have adopted many of the processes and procedures they need for further aircraft development. I hope to see a 100 seater MRJ announced soon.

That fan is lovely. The MRJ was initially conceived with a simpler (lower cost) fan. I'm glad to see the contoured blades were kept (mostly for pattern factor to feed the low pressure compressor).

Last time I checked the MRJ90 had a 96 seat layout available.

The next version after the MJR90 should be the MRJ70.

But in the real world, it will not be more than 88. Forget the 70, it will be cancelled and replaced by the 100 seats.

Agreed. The 70 seat MRJ wouldn't be competitive. The market has moved up in gauge anyway. 86 seats for US airlines, which the MRJ does adequately and 100 seats. The question is, how much pitch for 100 seats...

The jet should roll out this week, though it's still empty on the inside.

Is their a baggage bin in the back behind the cabin? That aft door looks pretty far forward in these shots. Is it just the angle?

Yes, the baggage compartment is in the back of the aircraft.

Yes... there isn't any underfloor cargo on this bird (unlike the EMB-170 series)... instead, it does the classic "regional" aft cargo bin... it's door, however, is on the starboard side of the fuselage.....

Woah?!?!? First flight still is 2Q 2015?!?! This plane will be DOA simply for industry lag time... not to mention that a certain rather large amount of the order books belong to US Carriers where the plane actually sits above current scope limits for weight... should prove interesting to see how that gets resolved, esp. with pilot shortages really taking hold.

I'm hoping it will fly sooner, with the projected FF being pessimistic to avoid possible negative postponement PR and include schedule cushion. Of course this is Japan's first passenger jet since the 70's and will be much advanced, so full completion time could be a full year. But then again, this is no 787-sized monster, so we'll see. Beating 2Q by a month would mean first flight in February. Not bad for a clean-sheet jet.

Despite the pinchy-nose I'm starting to like this bird and hope we can see healthy sales and a more diverse planespotting experience. This segment of the market is becoming quite competitive (despite being abandoned by A+B) and is fun to watch. Lets hope Mitsu are better at making details of the progress available to the public than Bombardier.

Probably for public relations purposes to make it appear further along in development than it really is, especially since it's more than 2 years late. Based on the original plan it should already be in service.
