I heard about this. I think it's undergoing an investigation because they have no clue what went wrong. So sad to hear about that.

It's undergoing an investigation because that's the job of the NTSB - to investigate plane crashes. From the Live ATC audio, it sounds like they may have a fairly good idea of what went wrong.

Building lots in this neighborhood are very small. It's remarkable that the aircraft did not hit any houses. It's also amazing how it so completely disintegrated.

Sounds like continued VFR flight into deteriorating conditions.

It's on the Live ATC archive for ISP Approach for June 17, 1300Z, right at the beginning of that section. The pilot contacts approach, says he is a departure from FRG and "I need your help, sir." Controller contacts him for his position and intentions, the pilot says "Heading to Islip but don't have the visibility." Controller asks if he wants to declare an emergency, the pilot says no, and that he will return to FRG. He crashed moments later.

Visibility was very low that day and looks like the pilot got disoriented in the clouds

It was a Cessna 400. You'd think with this cockpit:

Getting the AP on and/or the just the modern avionics would help prevent something like that.

178 seconds to live video comes to mind here.

Sad news as always.
