B6 Announces DCA-PBI/RSW

Thu Jun 19, 2014 3:08 pm

Today, B6 announced where they'll fly 4 of their remaining 6 slots pairs that they acquired from the AA/US slot divestiture. The airline will offer 2x daily flights to both PBI and RSW on Embraer 190 aircraft.

B6, in total, recieved 12 slot pairs, here's the breakdown on where they'll be put to use:

2 pairs - Hartford/Windsor Locks (BDL)
2 pairs - Charleston (CHS)
1 pair - Nassau (NAS)
1 pair - Tampa (TPA)

2 pairs - Ft. Myers (RSW)
2 pairs - West Palm Beach (PBI)

2 pairs - UN-ANNOUNCED but will be known in the coming weeks per an official at the press conference at DCA

Not entirely true. The second frequency each to RSW and PBI will only be for a few weeks. And they are both seasonal routes, too.

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/jetblu...xpand-ronald-reagan-140000846.html

So that leaves 4 slot pairs unaccounted for during the winter, and 6 during spring/summer 2015.

This will be different than doing DCA-PBI on a long-in-the-tooth US 734.

I always liked the USAirways routing -- down the Potomac -- then 30,000 feet over the Atlantic coastline. If you had a map of the coast, you could actually tell where you were.

DCA slots are so rare and valuable. Why not send them to business markets instead more Florida vacationing ?

Because jetBlue is not really a business airline.

I've heard rumors of DCA-MSY but I find it hard to believe with WN starting the route in August.

That's not a routing that's unique to USAirways. Pretty much anyone heading to Florida uses the same flightplan.

Florida is no longer only a vacation market. It's one of the fastest growing places to do business in the US, and they've added almost 600,000 jobs in 3 years. Companies are moving business units, or outright relocating, there. It has a high quality of life, and no state income tax.

They're evolving to a hybrid between leisure and business

They've abandoned most of OAK/BUR/ONT/IAD in favor of SFO/LAX/DCA. They've just launched flat-bed Mint service on JFK-LAX/SFO.

I know that, at this point, it's like beating a dead horse, but I wonder if the last slots will be used for JFK flights? I could see them upguaging a couple of JFK-Florida flights to spare an extra slot at JFK, making room for 3 JFK-DCA flights, moving the flights from IAD, and announcing another new route from DCA with the remaining slot pair.

Did they already have MCO & FLL before this?

If I were to guess, ALBANY will get some love from Jetblue.

Only time will tell.

First, isn't TPA running at 3x daily in Dec, an addition of 2x? And is SRQ a possibility for a seasonal one?

Because JetBlue feels that at DCA, the Business shuttles are already fully covered, so JetBlue instead is creating the "Weekend Getaway" routes for the Business and Gov't folks who need to get away and relax for a few days. This type of service was lacking at DCA.

Well obviously they think this is the most profitable choice for them, or else they'd do something else.

Because you are capturing where the traffic for where the power brokers work and where they like to play.

Many ALB FFers are assuming this. JFK is not feasible to send a 190 to, nor is BOS. We are half expecting ALB-DCA in the near future once B6 gets up and running. ALB is the only upstate airport of substance that is not served (yet), and they are developing a nice little hublet at DCA in the process

Not that they cant, but B6 has an aversion to such short flights in the NE corridor (unless connecting key markets like BOS and JFK).

Too bad it's not a year round service, I'd love to take B6 up to DC - but not when I could get stuck in a blizzard! Oh well, I guess WN can always get me there when I want to go!

I think both of these routes will do well. It will be interesting to see how B6 uses these 2 slot pairs outside the winter season - maybe summer seasonal nonstops to popular summertime destinations like ACK, BDA, MVY, and/or PWM?

Then there's still 4 other DCA slot pairs at B6's disposal. I could certainly see stuff like BUF, JAX, and/or MSY happen, but I also think the likes of DFW and ORD - routes with no direct LCC competition - could work too. Will be very interesting to see what B6 ultimately decides to do!

I'd beg to differ; although seasonal, B6 enjoys much success with their JFK-MVY/ACK flights, as well as BOS-ACK (flight time of 20 minutes).

It's defientley possible, I'm just afraid that AA and to a lesser extent UA, will undercut them.

It's a mix of both local and connecting traffic. Having worked the flight, I've met individuals from the D.C. area, as well as from Florida and a couple from the west coast (in addition to the usual crowd of Northeasterners). In any event, even though the route had just started (this was a few weeks ago), the loads to ACK were packed.

It's preferred routing predicated by ATC; not something special USAirways does to give its passengers a special view.

There's a fair amount of local air traffic between BOS and ACK because the alternative is an hour-and-a-half drive to Woods Hole or Hyannis, and then a 1:15 to 2:30 ferry ride over to Nantucket.

Cape Air (9K) also flies the route, year round with Cessna 402s.

No aversion. Slots are an issue. Aircraft too. They are pushing the fleet to the max with growth of 10-12 planes a year.
They just have better routes to fly than ALB-JFK.

You should blame Schummer. If he had included ALB in the original upstate service for JFK slots requirement, you would have had you JFK service for a decade already

The market is tiny. It's 20 PDEW in peak summer.
