AS Arrives @ TPA

Fri Jun 20, 2014 10:05 pm

The first AS arrived about 30 minutes ago.. I only so saw the tail for a brief moment so I don't know whether it was -700, -800 or -900

Not a special scheme though.

Hmmmm......I wonder if it got a water cannon salute,   ....LOL

Looked at what I missed seeing that today. I was on an early flight out of the end of the D gates, and may have been there too early as well even if I was out on the C gates.

I was just watching the local FOX news, and the TPA airport director stated that there are 350 pax who fly to SEA every day and called the route one of the "largest unserved markets" out of TPA.

Here's an article from the Tribune covering the first flight. Congrats to AS and TPA--I have long suspected that SEA-TPA might be in the works for AS but was surprised that it was among the new routes announced this year. Great to see another long transcon out of SEA!

Huh, I wouldn't have suspected that route had so much O/D traffic, seems like a good match for both AS & TPA. I'd speculate that AS has been looking at the route for some time. I wonder with that much O/D, how long will it be before TPA starts seeing the 739s.

Thanks for the link .... I am pleased with this route & the recent MSY add, both linking another S.E. US city to the AS route map, which is looking fuller & more impressive each year.

It seems they're operating out of A in TPA. Any idea who's handling them? Thought they might operate out of F and link up with AA there.

Probably not very long. AS looks like they are great at matching capacity to a specific day's flight. Today's MSY flight is a 739, for example, as are several flights later in the month on various days of the week. I'm sure TPA will be seeing the 739ER at some point this summer, no question.

O/D from TPA to SEA but what about the connection traffic through SEA?

If you look at the picture in the article.....the aircraft is landing on 1R.....and according to one of my fellow TPAers, it took off on 19L. For those unfamiliar with TPA, commercial aircraft are not supposed to use these runways. Iwonder why the the deviation.

Why? I'm pretty sure WN uses that runway on a regular basis in addition to 1L and 19R. I think it was closed for a while for construction but I think it has reopened.

That is not true whatsoever, I've seen WN, B6, UA, NK, and obviously 3M land and takeoff 19L/1R. It's an 8,300ft runway, why wouldn't it be used? Obviously you are unfamiliar with TPA.

No

There are no commercial takeoffs on 19L and no landings on 1R. However, there are takeoffs on 1R and landings on 19L

I think you are confused by what I was saying.

OK...so was 1L/19R closed from 5:00pm-6:30pm yesterday? If so....that answers my question

As to why AS flew out on 19L, it was because 1L/19R was closed due to an emergency that landed just prior (UA 1533). Both the AS flight and a DL 739 took off on 19L during that time.

For many years this has been the "preferred" pattern at TPA. When the runways are in a south configuration, 19L & 19R are arrival runways, and 19R is the departure runway. 19L jet departures are not frequent, though planes have a very impressive right bank angle after takeoff to avoid flying over Beach Park.

In A airside, gates 2, 10, and 11 at the UA end are sitting unused. Near plenty of amenities and a Bacardi 'mojito' bar -- plus restrooms.

And connect to 3M's and B6's Tampa - Caribbean flights.

Pretty suprising to me they put AS at gate 11. Its strange in TPA theres so many gates just left sitting there and so many overused gates.

A lack of planning and mergers moving has caused this I expected AS to us Airside E at gates 74 or 75.

Oh yeah that's probably it. I hope this will make DL launch a TPA-SEA to compete. Kick start that west coast even more. AA just announced LAX and DL announced SLC.

Hopefully this will lead to competiton, im still hoping for a UA TPA-SFO or WN TPA-SAN. Sorry for being a bit off topic.
I personally think AS will do great in TPA.

Funny, I said the same thing, and a moderator (777ER) deleted it because this thread is "about AS."

Based on the 320-350 pax traveling from TPA-SEA, I would expect there will be some competition at some point.

Keep wishing for Delta to add TPA-SEA. The only thing that would happen in that scenario is that Alaska would use up the subsidies and then pull out. The market between SEA-MCO and SEA-FLL/MIA is bigger than SEA-TPA and Delta isn't moving to add either of those. DL is growing SEA but I don't see them growing much to the east from SEA. That would poach traffic from their ATL, DTW and MSP hubs to Asia and the west coast of the U.S. TPA is never gonna happen on DL. That 320 figure that you keep mentioning is not PDEW, it's both directions, so basically, half that figure for the numbers of people going in each direction. It's also worth noting that, although MCO and MIA/FLL both have nonstops, their average fare is higher than TPA's.

This isn't going to happen. If it took AS this long to connect TPA to their long-standing SEA hub, you can bet it's not at the top of DL's list, particularly when they're running so many SEA-Florida pax through the ATL hub on a daily basis. DL might add some higher-yielding east coast markets to their SEA operation (BOS, for example), but I don't think we'll be seeing them adding secondary markets outside of the western U.S. to the mix.

TPA, and Florida in general are Delta strong markets. Over time I fully expect to see at least 1x daily to each of Delta's big three from SEA, just like they have at LAX (minus FLL but they have a MIA flight and 2x to MCO)

However I still think that is something later down the road, 5-7 years. For now, if TPA sees extra flying on DL to the west it will more LAX flying (10x weekly this summer) or SLC will come back.
