ICN Now Connected By Fast Train, KTX

Sun Jun 29, 2014 5:37 am

From June 30th, ICN airport offers fast train service (KTX) to various cities in Korea. Until now, passengers have to transfer at Seoul train station but now the same train runs continuously. ICN-Busan takes 3h30m (ICN-Seoul 1h and Seoul-Busan 2h30). ICN-Busan 6 times a day, roughly 60 USD with bunch of discounts (15-30%), and timed well for flight banks. The train stops several cities on the way to Busan. There are other routes, but only 1-2 trains a day and not timed well. KTX is trying to compete with ICN-PUS (4 daily) and Daegu (2 daily) flights.

The only issue will be that KTX is usually full during weekends, so it won't be easy to change ticket if flight is delayed on weekends. Also last train leaves ICN at 2055, first train from Busan arrives ICN at 0842 - it may not work will all flights. Still this is a big improvement because transfer trains in Seoul station is a true pain. Walk a lot and move up and down quite a bit. Hope they increase frequencies to ICN. Currently there are nearly 60 KTX trains a day from Busan and Seoul.

How is the Seoul-Busan air market? Will airlines flying that route compete with comparable fares?

Most O&D is probably done by GMP-PUS already ... The only ones really flying ICN-PUS would be international connections or LCCs

How are these trains? What's the rail gauge on these trains? The speed of the train sometimes depends on rail gauge, depending on topography.

Korean Air and Air Busan are running on GMP-PUS nearly every hour, and Air Busan offers many discounts. From ICN, only KE and OZ have flights, and it is expensive.

I'm not a train buff, but I know that KTX cannot run its full speed between Seoul and ICN. The rail wasn't made for KTX but rather a wide use.

They're modified TGV sets, as far as I know. So standard gauge and capable of quite high speeds if the lines are capable of supporting it.

Comfortable with on-board Wifi. Clean and actually not so densely packed. Fairly similar to Shinkansen and HSR in China i thought. Speed seems to be around 200+km/h.

I love that no one talks or uses cell phones on public transport, will Certainly be taking this to Gimhae/Busan now that DL no longer flies to PUS and does non-stop to ICN from SEA now!

Thanks for posting!

Initially License built TGV

KTX full speed is 305 km/h, when the track is capable.
