QF A380 Burst Water Pipe Floods Aisles Inflight

Wed Jul 02, 2014 11:11 am

QF 94 returned to LA because of leaking water, but there were no safety concerns for passengers on-board.

Although the article only shows the exterior of a QF A380, one picture online shows a very flooded aisle. Yuck!

Wonder what the risk is to the electrcial system as water and power are not good friends (regardless of how good your insulation is).

I was looking at Flightaware this morning, and saw that a QF A380 landed at 2:39 am. I thought it was strange, and I tought QF had a new A380 arrival time, but now I know what happened. They just showed the story on ABC7 news.

This isn't the first A380 water pipe incident, is it? I seem to recall an Emirates 380 flood from the upper deck first class shower a few years back.

Assuming a full flight, would the passengers have to sit in those seats with the water coming down on them while the plane is landing?

Didn't a pipe break on an AA MD-80 awhile back also? Seem to recall at that time everyone decrying the age of the Mad Dogs and what not. This just goes to show that new airplanes are every bit as capable of breaking as old ones

Every flight attendant knows where the water shut off valves are located for each galley and there is a master water shut off as well that the pilots control. Someone should have caught it! If it was coming from a particular galley unit it is a very simple twist of a handle to shut it off but if it is a broken connection behind a ceiling or wall panel then the pilots have to shut it off. Hopefully they did that to mitigate the damage. Problem is water always flows downhill so if it was on the upper deck there will be a mess downstairs and in the lower lobe/electronics bay.

At least it wasn't sewage. And at least it happened relatively soon after departure, rather than just past the halfway point when the only viable option is to soldier on.

Depends on the nature of the break. If it was a production error it will be covered. If QF maintenance had been tinkering with it probably not. Depends on how their contract was written.

Strange... The same thing happened to me in '09 on a QF flight 25 from AKL to LAX, a B744. Although it wasn't as severe, the F and J cabins were flooded and we diverted to HNL.

It happens on all airplanes on very rare occasions. The thing that made this newsworthy is that since it is an A380, a burst tube can flood the lower deck. Other than the small 747 upper deck, leaks go into the cargo holds, wheel wells or EE bays and out the bilge of the airplane. It doesn't surprise me than an MD80 would have a leak. Usually leaks get worse with time, but not always.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

I seem to remember QF having a fairly serious electrical failure on a 744 departing out of LAX a few years ago after a galley flooded and caused a failure of one of the main buses.

I have called up there and while we turned the water off at each galley and lav manually, they pulled CB's that operate the H20 pumps, I guess. I know on some of the older airplanes water was gravity flow but I would swear now they have an electrical cutoff.

The water would eventually find its way down to the baggage compartment/electronics bays and that is where the real havoc would start. It is relatively simple to vacuum water up from carpeting and replace seat covers but all of the electric systems will have to be checked.

My next door neighbor recently had the H20 line feeding into his hot water heater break right after they left for a four day trip. Since the heater is on the second floor, the entire first floor of the house was destroyed and had to be ripped out clean back to the studs. We were talking then about why buildings don't have a simple sensor built in that says "hey--something is wrong here--too much water is flowing too quickly" and shut off automatically. Sounds like large aircraft should have something similar.

[Edited 2014-07-02 14:06:16]

I also have experienced (especially on the 744 and A330 where a lavatory faucet will get stuck open and drain all the fresh water overboard. We don't notice it until we go to make coffee for the service just prior to landing and we have no water.

Now I know why I always carry my umbrella in my carry-on bag.

I thought it was for the short run from the aircraft stairs on the tarmac to the bus bringing me to the terminal, as my planes seem never to reach jet bridges. It's even more useful during a TPAC flight.

There is no master shut off - but they can pull breakers for the water compressors - that said - the residual will still leak out.
So a combination of shuting off the supplies at each lav and galley, plus killing the compressor, would mitigate it.
Not thoroughly familiar with the 380, but at altitude - the compressor may not even be in play - just bleed air - that could complicate things too.

I'm curious to know how this will impact the daily A380 services with 1 x A380 frame out of action for a lengthy period until repairs are carried out.

Question is would QF ferry the plane back to SYD or MNL?

I bet it would have been really cool to be on the flight and watch the water move fwd-aft and from one side to the other as the airplane pitched and rolled.

That is a lot of water!!!  Wow!

If the pilot (or in this case, computer) is doing his/its job, the water won't move with roll of the aircraft during a properly coordinated turn - a good way to measure the pilot's "commercial smoothness"

More QF maintenance issues? I don't see how a water pipe can burst unless it has to deal with something it was not designed to handle.

Wonder whether they are really safe to fly in?
