HA Last L-1011 And DC-8 Flight?

Wed Jul 02, 2014 2:10 pm

I was wondering, when was Hawaiian Air last L-1011 and DC-8 flight, mainly to LAX? I remember back 1994, HA starting using AA DC-10s, but I remember one L-1011 landing at LAX in 1994.

I flew an L-1011 on HA from HNL-SFO in February of 1994, so it would have been after that. We had a DC-10 on the outbound, an L-1011 on the return.

The DC-8's were retired in 1993 and the L10's were retired during 1994 when the entire fleet was replaced by ex-AA D10's. The D10's left in 2003 and 2004 replaced by 763's.

Based on www.eucomairlines.de the last tristar seems to be n766be msn 1112 on 6 sept 1994.

It seems that HA's very last L10 service was flown to LAX by N766BE on September 6, 1994.

Gosh, I remember those DC-8s at LAX in the early 90s.

Were they flying LAX- HNL or other particular routes? Seemed like a small plane the LAX-Hawaii market.

They also had a pair of -63. UA also served the islands with DC-8-71s.

Yep, my one and only DC-8 flight (at least that I can remember) was OGG-SFO on a -71 in January 1989.

While we're at it, does anyone know when HA retired its Dash 7s? My only flight on one of those was on the same trip, from KOA to OGG, and there was another topic just the other day about Dash 7s that got me thinking about it.

The Dash 7's were retired in 1994 with HA becoming all jet with the DC-9 fleet. Service to Kapalua and Molokai was discontinued when the D7's were retired. I flew roundtrip HNL to Molokai on the D7 and remember the F/A serving a cup of fruit punch and a bag of macadamia nuts.....in about 20minutes to fly across the channel between Oahu and Molokai. And drank gallons of Primo beer during my visit.

Molokai survived long past the Dash 7 retirement. HA operated HNL-MKK-LNY-HNL on DC-9-50s and 717s until 15 Aug 04, at which time an interline agreement was established with the newly independent Island Air.

I remember there was an early morning loop flight out of HNL to Molokai and Lanai with the 717, and another one in the late afternoon/early evening. Was there also HNL-MKK-LNY-OGG jet service in the late 1990s/early 2000s? I seem to remember being on a family trip and begging my parents to put us on that flight. I'd check for myself but my timetables are all in boxes at the moment.

We took this flight in 1994 on a DC-9-50 routing HNL-MKK-LNY then LNY-OGG-HNL a few days later, the leg from MKK to LNY was the shortest flight I've been on in a jet, we took off like a rocket, banked right and headed over the channel, 10 mins tops, wheels up to wheels down.

Next question is, when did HA stop flying the SD-330s? We flew on those a few times HNL-MKK in the late 70s early 80s.

I think it was about 8 minutes when I flew LNY-MKK in the mid 1990s a few times. My Aunty lived on Lanai and she always flew Island Air non-stop (Dash-6 back then), but my mom always wanted to be on the "big plane" so we always flew the HNL-MKK-LNY-OGG routing.

HA F/A's nicknamed that flight, "The Bounce."

Why thankfully? I much prefer the 7-abreast Y class configuration on the 767 over all other widebodies (the A330/340 comes next). Only a 1-in-7 chance of a middle seat on the 767 vs. 1-in-4 on the A330.

The book "A Pictorial History of the Pioneer Carrier in the Pacific" (Hawaiian Airlines history, 2000) by Stan Cohen, page 108 is a passage written by Captain Dave Wolz. He tells of his ferrying the last HA DC-8, N8973U from HNL to Kingman.
Unfortunately any reference to a specific date is curiously omitted from the piece.
An accompanying photo includes a caption saying "The last Hawaiian Airlines DC-8 in Honolulu". This photo depicts what I'm pretty sure is a DC-8-63 series. N8973U was a 62 series.
In further research I learned that sister ships N1807 and N8969U were the last HA DC-8s to be sold, in Mar 93. N8973U and the others were sold in Feb 93, or earlier.
Sorry for lack of definitive information. Just wanted to share what little information I had. I too am curious about the last scheduled operations of those great HA DC-8s.
Cheers.

Why would a specific date make any difference, and further...why would that be "curiously omitted"?

The original post asked WHEN the last L-1011 and DC-8s flights took place. I just thought a specific date in the DC-8 piece might have been a nice insertion.

I remember seeing the HA DC-8's frequently at PHL doing MAC charters. Did the DC-8's end their HA flying days with military flying, or did it end with scheduled HA flights to Hawaii?

An added tidbit of information...
I saw and photographed a Hawaiian DC-8 in Sydney in the 1980s, N8973U (but the ink has faded and it may be a slightly wrong rego...) Also at least one TriStar, N762BE. Hawaiian stopped Sydney flights for a long time before resuming them with 767s. Sadly, they are nighttime arrivals and return departures so I have never been able to photograph a Hawaiian 767 here in Sydney.

I have been a flight attendant with HA for 29 years. I have kept a journal and recorded every flight that I have ever worked since the first day that I was hired back in 1985. According to my log book, I worked my last HA DC-8 flight on aircraft N8973U from Diego Garcia to Singapore and then on to Guam on May 5, 1993, which would seem to conflict with the date that was sited in an earlier post credited to the Jet Airliner Production List, as that source claims that this particular aircraft was returned in February of 1993. I have photos of this occasion as it was the end of an era for me and my colleagues, and a sad day for all of us.

I love this picture, I remember flying my first L10 on HA, PDX-SEA-HNL-MKK and return L10 to DH7. We took HA once just to SEA for the day, and came home on the 10 or 11pm return flight from SEA.

Hey HALFA,
What a great photo! Thanks for sharing it!
This photo reinforces my opinion that this Hawaiian colourscheme particularly suited the contours of the TriStar's rear fuselage... I'm so sad at I only ever saw a few Hawaiian TriStars in Sydney in the early 1990s.

Indeed - in the late 80s and early 90s, if one landed at HNL on an interisland flight before noon, you could be forgiven for thinking you were at an Asian airport. JAL 747s and DC10s on the Ewa concourse and the Ewa frontal, ANA on the Diamond Head, and no US legacies to be seen anywhere.

In my childhood memories HA is always on the center concourse - their use of the Ewa concourse seemed to coincide with the arrival of the DC10. Continental always had the east side of the center concourse, AA at the end, and Delta (Western) on the west side, with Hawaiian L1011s sprinkled liberally throughout. Northwest had the east frontal gates and United owned the Diamond Head concourse. Gates at HNL were "common use" but ramp equipment placement has always ensured airlines are generally in the same spots. Great photo, HALFA!

The really juicy stuff that I always wanted to see as a kid - Qantas, Garuda, Singapore, Air New Zealand - always seemed to pass through HNL late at night. I remember taxiing out for a redeye takeoff on the Reef Runway in a Delta L1011 (probably around 1990 or 1992) and seeing the blinking lights of a Qantas 747 landing on 4R. Very impressive stuff.
