The DL 717 Destination Thread

Wed Jul 02, 2014 5:04 pm

Recently, Delta has been adding a number of smaller cities with their 717s. There have been a number of threads in regards to the DL 717 but I figured that we could make a thread just for the destinations they are placing the aircraft on.

I'm sure I'll miss a few so feel free to add those ones in.

I looked at October figuring that Delta usually doesn't do less that a 3 month build out.

Here's what we have so far in October:

ATL to:
ATW x1
CHO x1
CLE x3
ECP x7
EWR x6
ORD x1
GNV x2
HOU x4
HSV x2
IAD x4
JAN x4
LIT x3
MDW x3
TLH x3
TYS x1
VPS x4

DTW to:
ORD x2

LGA to:
DTW x2
PBI x3
TPA x2

JFK to:
BOS x6

I'm very curious to see how DL will route some of these aircraft in and out of different cities. IE JFK-BOS is a singular market so they will have to add a rotation somewhere to get it back to ATL rather than Deadhead the crew in.

Please continue to post here if something has been left off or new routes are added. Again, the above list is pulled from Oct '14. Thanks.

Quoting bluefltspecial (Thread starter):
DTW to:
ORD x2

Missed a bunch from DTW:

For October:

DTW:
ORD 2x
LGA 2x
GRR 1x
JFK 1x
MCI 3x
DCA 1x
EWR 4x
BNA 2x

Other markets from DTW have been scheduled with 717 service, but currently aren't scheduled in October include: TVC, GRB, MSN, MKE, RDU, BUF, STL

The NYC 717 flying is being covered by aircraft routed from DTW and from the DTW 717 pilot base.

TPA also has JFK service on the 717 with A/C originating JFK and turning in TPA. I believe by October all flights TPA to LGA and JFK will be 717. The schedules to JFK kind of suck. TPA-JFK at noon is the only flight that offers connections to international departures and returning the last nonstop is before 3pm so no international connections and you have to route JFK-ATL-TPA to get home. Not sure why that service pattern if intent would be to serve the international connections over JFK when DL offers 4+ nonstop to LGA if going just to NYC.
watch what you want. you may get it.

They will also probably put it on either SBN-DTW, SBN-ATL, SBN-MSP or SBN-LGA on Notre Dame football weekends. They are already using a CRJ9 on the LGA flight those weekends so they could probably use the B717.

DL is currently running 4x ATL-GSP and what doesn't quite look like 1x to CHS (looks like they skip the occasional day). Not sure if that is slated to continue through October.

The CHS flights are weird, because on some days in the last week or so I've seen up to 4 717s on a given day, then some days just one.

Looks like I missed quite a few, and it looks like Delta is really pushing the 717 out to more than a few core markets.

I am very curious how many of these smaller markets haven't seen mainline service in years - if ever. I know CHO hasn't seen mainline since the early 90s and then it was with US not DL. Any thoughts?

It is going to be interesting to see if DL keeps the 717s focused on hibbing DTW & ATL

Quoting DeltaB717 (Reply 20):

Glad to see EVV is on the pending DL 717 service list. Back in the day EVV used to see mainline from DL & EA. As I remember correctly, those DC-9s and occasional 727s were always full.

The DL 717 will be a welcome visitor to that hard-working city.

I'm curious, too, but I don't know of a (free) site to check schedule history xx motnhs ago, say on a Monday.

A few people had asserted that DL 717s weren't really going to replace regional jets - they would just replace other (by definition, larger) mainline equipment. There is enough evidence at this point that such a prediction has been proven wrong.

So, I was expecting to see GSO on the list above. Got a one/two a day in July. Then I looked and uber surprised that in October, it's basically one A319 and the balance of MD88s!

Maybe Delta is just putting in some aircraft as placeholders that far out and will adjust based on segment demand as they get closer?

I just kinda laugh at how Citrus had the 717 on GSO-ATL and ATL-HOU and now these birds are back on the same routes with different paint.

That is plausible. Lots of international routes see adjustments to aircraft (in addition to length of season changes and reductions to less-than-daily service).

Absolutely, DL does this all the time--much more so than any other airline, in my experience. For example, I usually fly NYC-MSP with my family at least once a year, and tend to book fairly far in advance to get a cheap fare or use miles. At the time of booking, nearly all the flights usually show up as A320s, but in reality it could end up being pretty much any kind of narrowbody equipment--MD-88, A319, 738, etc. They usually seem to make adjustments about 90 days out--and sometimes more than once. It can be frustrating because the seat assignments tend to get all messed up, but I've learned to keep an eye on my DL bookings. And I guess it makes good business sense--seems to work for DL, anyway.

That seems to be DL's pattern, especially in their secondary Florida routes. I notice routes formerly using the MD-88 have been upsized to MD-90s in MLB. But it also appears that ATL-MLB may be going all-mainline as local business picks up with the on-going expansion of operations by Northrop-Grumman and Embraer. Those off-peak flights may shift from CR7s to B717s.

I wonder if we could see ORH added to the DL network and start off with 2x daily 717 flights to ATL and 3-4x daily CRJ2 flights to DTW. I think that the 110 seats would be the perfect amount of capacity for the ORH market.

I agree with you about the Northrop Grumman and Embraer. Don't forget AAR is based out of MLB too. Last I checked the flt schedule it was all MD88's for MLB; with upgrades being awarded to the 757 and A319. I'm hoping rather than the A319, we get the 717 instead.

You can't judge an airline's likelihood of serving a market based on their having served it before. ORH is a small market with significant leakage to BOS and other surrounding airports. Like ISP with WN, if I were ORH, I'd be happy with anf grateful for my existing service and not start to get my hopes up for many others.

Interesting how they're going to run a 712 on the FLL-BOS service. FLL-JFK and FLL-LGA also receive MD-88s.

Before too long it will be really difficult to keep up with all of the cities that they are operated to. The fleet should be close to 35 by now and 40 by around the end of the summer and that is not even half. Has anyone heard any facts about where the Blue 1 717s are going to end up?

I just started noticing this a few days ago, so I'm glad to know it just started appearing here. Right now the 717 is responsible for all ATL flying out of DSM, 3x even.

Will this really only be on the schedule for one day?
