Thu Jul 03, 2014 12:07 pm

According to its CEO, SAW will be getting a 2nd runway, construction should start by late November 2014 and be completed in 2 years.
-He also says; Jan-June pax numbers up by 33% and should reach 24Million for 2014.
-The runway will be 60m x 3500m.
-With TK moving 21 jets to SAW from IST, Pegasus' share at SAW dropped to 60% from 68% and it might go even lower since TK planning to move up to 60-70 jets there, till the new airport in Istanbul opens.( another 3-4 years)
-Ryanair is planning on coming to SAW.

Good deal.

Such a large metropolitan area certainly needs the Asian airport, and the added runway capacity will go nicely to support the added demand being generate on that side.

Will be interesting to see when TK has those 60-70 planes based at SAW. Will be huge overlapping network to its existing IST flying.

I still remember my first visit and tour of newly opened SAW about 15-years ago when all there was a few Russian and cargo movements per day and airport authority was super excited to talk to and make a deal with anyone to serve the facility. They were so excited when they convinced EasyJet to utilize the airport.

SAW is much more convenient for anyone living on the Asian side, which is pretty much half the city. I much prefer flying from there because of the direct bus to Kadikoy. It's great to see it doing well. Pegagus is one of the best low-cost airlines I've seen with lots of connections to lots of very interesting places.

Quoting peterinlisbon (Reply 2):

You can reach to IST in a shorter time than reaching to SAW from Kadiköy.

Article about SAW.

Says growth in 2014 so far running at 28% year over year !

The operator Malaysia Airports Holdings and Limak Yatirim of Turkey are getting close to possibly issuing EUR500mil in bonds to finance expansion work.
They plan to build a satellite terminal which will help increase capacity to 45 million passengers a year.

Also interesting that the new runway being built and facility will be A380 ready, and SAW has been speaking with airlines like SQ to utilize SAW instead. (which I doubt greatly with the new SQ-TK venture starting).
They also say airlines from Serbia, Jordan, Dubai and Russia will be increasing frequencies at SAW.
