Congratulations to Germany on winning the World Cup! To all the German A.Netters, know that you have a fine Football team!

What will be the ride home for Germany? In 2010, Spain had an Iberia A340-600, EC-LEV painted with the word "Campeones" on the sides.
Lufthansa has a few 747-8s that have the "Fanhansa" titles on them. If either of those -8i's were used to fly the team home, would they fly with a modified livery to celebrate the win?

Ya, I can't find the exact article that stated that, however these two seem to point to them flying back on YI, since it landed there a couple of days ago, and plans to return the 14th. A one-off scheduled service.

It isn't as far as I know. I don't think GRU is either.

Is any airport in South America certified for A380s yet? I don't think so but not positive. And you need more than one as also need airports that can handle diversions for weather or other reasons.

It can handle the 388 as improvements have been done on airport runways. The problem is the Brazilian Regulator.

747-8 has nearly as many premium seats, but with fewer economy. The 748 was probably big enough.

Are you joking ? This plane is only for her Merkel and Gauck the president of Germany! I wonder why they not travel by two A340, one for each at least ? The Fanhansa 747 was probably at the same time empty over the atlantic to pick up our players, anyways they at least deserve it. How any other country leaders would come to such event ? Any would take a normal scheduled flight or is this common practise

A First Class ticket FRA-GIG is 10,000EUR. I do not know Germany's security protocol for their highest public officials, but imagine they would have to travel with several body guards. Betcha taking 'Angie 1' almost paid for itself

24 years ago, when German won the WC in Rome, they flew home to FRA in a Luftwaffe 707.

DFB is rich enough to pay for the charter and LH is a Sponsor and they will certainly insist on taking them home.

Why should they travel separately? The President is a figure head of state. She must fly the Luftwaffe 340 because of security and the communication that is on board.

not so sure about the amount of jet-a which is burned on TXL-GIG-TXL. but what about the A319CJ? Seriously, they easily could have taken the small A319CJ over the A340 and definitely safe some €€€.

Come on guys. It's absolutely common, that the chancellor is going to the WC final. Even more the President whose job description is representation of the country.

They shared a plane so where is the point? There is money spend for much more senseless things. I read today that the German economy will benefit from the WC title, meaning more tax money for the government.

I've never heard a discussion whether the U.S. president should use a smaller plane than the 747. It's such a typical German discussion.

Indeed... LH doesn't have any agreement with FIFA and is therefore not allowed to display any imagery related to the World Cup. That's why they use generic football themes during World Cups (think the football nose in 2006, or the Fanhansa titles this year). It's pretty smart actually. Everybody knows it's World Cup related and yet LH doesn't have to pay anything to FIFA. On the other hand, who besides us a.netters will have watched the EK flight attendants at the medal ceremony yesterday and said "aha! Emirates!". Hardly anyone I bet.

I have them ( high ranking politicans, that is) quite often on my flights. And its not only them, protocol demands quite a few asisstants and security details traveling with them. So its NEVER just one ticket v. a whole flight. And head of G8 state flying comercial? Forget it. I am proud that this discussion was nowhere to be found in the german news, the Germen Michel was quite!

Ek is one of FIFAs premium sponsors. FIFA is guarding and protecting their prime moneyspenders carfully and vicously. No way a LH Logo would be visible at such an event. One would have to be really careful and innovative, see Fanhansa and the soccer ball painted radar dome during the 2006 event. This year SONY forbid the fancy dr dre headphone being worm by the players.

However, LH is one of the main sponsors of the Germen soccer association DFB. They do all air transportation for them and pay a lump sum on top. So all ferryflts are on LH´s account. It is very complicated to take an A380 out of operation to do a promotion flt to RIO, it would have to be substituted by another aircraft in the meantime. There are some B744s parked, so it was just a lot easier this way.

I´ve seen a picture on Facebook of the 747-8i that will bring the German Team back to Berlin tomorrow.
It has an extra Sticker on the fuselage that reads "Siegerflieger" (something like Victory Plane)
It´s gold and it´s applied after the Fanhansa wording, same letter size.
Quite good looking IMO

Don't think so ? Many country leaders travelling on regular commercial flights. Certainly also G8, for example the UK and their head David Cameron was and is flying for example BA in Club World and why also not.

I don't thin so. The Prime Minister of the UK or the German Chancellor has a tight schedule and that alone makes flying Commercial impractical most of the time.

May be for Long time scheduled visits it can work but for destinations which have no scheduled Services or Brussels night debates which end in the wee hours there should be a Jet at disposal.

Besides, the UK PM more than often hires a Jet for certain missions, as do other heads of government of smaller states.

An EU presidency, which roates between the member states every 6 months, cannot be done without a biz Jet Standing by.

As was mentioned earlier, These people represent a Country, they Need secruity and theya Need communication which only the NSA can hack

Going online in a Lufty 747 or 340 is not an Option for them and their staff.

On rare occasions, yes, but those were more "publicity stunt" than anything. He saved the country $300K which for an economy the size of the UK's is an insignificant value. It was all about promoting the imagine of austerity. Personally I don't think such insignificant saving are worth the risk. People who complain about their head of state flying a private plane should get a life

Oh, there're plenty of political pundits pointing to the President of the United States flying around with a 747 for fundraising, vacationing and golfing and how much they cost to the taxpayers. I think it's normal for any free countries like Germany and USA to have such debate. It certainly would make more sense if he flies the 757 around the US instead to save some fuel.

BTW, I would love to see some pictures when the Champion flying home. What a great game! Congrats to Germany!

Either way, I think it's perfectly natural to be there with the government jet and am glad they were. Look forward to seeing the LH "Siegerflieger"!

They are not in any relationship of succession, having two completely divided offices, and are thus allowed to. Besides, who would care really. As if we would be 'decapitated' if that would happen. Plenty other opportunists standing by to take over. Although I pray to the lord that Merkel, in spite of how despicable I find her, never crashes; as that would mean Siggy Pop taking over (albeit only shortly). That would be the eucatastrophe.

Anyway, they (the team) will arrive tomorrow in TXL, flight number is LH2014 and here is an image of the 'Siegerflieger':
