Typhoon Rammusun, local name Glenda, is hammering Manila right now. There are reports from people working at the airport that a Singapore Air B777 (SQ918), which was RON since last night, was pushed by the strong winds and hit the Air Bridge. She was parked at Bay 6 of Terminal 1 at NAIA. Will keep you all posted as soon as the typhoon passes over and crews are allowed to inspect the aircraft. I don't know what that aircraft is doing there since they know a Category 3 typhoon was about to hit Manila.

Singapore Airlines haven't had that much luck lately with an A380 hitting an aerobridge in SYD after arriving as SQ231.

Im assuming this isnt their first experience with a Typhoon over there in Manila. Whats with all the towbars sitting under the plane? Wouldn't you want to put them inside somewhere or at least tie them down. I would imagine a chock might not suffice in such strong winds?

I don't think the towbars were sitting under the plane. But rather the front the of the plane spun in that direction because of the winds.
If you look closely at the second picture can you see damage to the engine cowling.

CX ferried their flight straight back to HKG empty after arriving into MNL yesterday night to escape the winds. I am surprised SQ was happy to leave their plane there. Maybe in future they will review this type of decision.

Seems to me it would have made sense to attach a large tug to the aircraft if they knew a typhoon was imminent and couldn't ferry the aircraft out.
Direct KNOBS, maintain 2700' until established on the localizer, cleared ILS runway 26 left approach.

A Malaysia Airlines 738 was also damaged. Cebu Pacific, Philippine Airlines and Air Asia Zest evacuated all their aircraft to Davao, Cebu, Iloilo, etc... overnight.

I see a tug, and several towbars, but nothing attached to the tug nor the aircraft.

An expensive way to learn. Typhoon is not an occurrence in Singapore and this inexperience shows.

I almost had something similar to this happen several years ago in BOS during a severe winter storm.
We had just blocked in (chocks and all) and the Agent was positioning the bridge towards our aircraft. Though the ramp had been plowed apparently beneath the compacted snow there was a layer of ice. The wind picked up and started pushing the aircraft towards the bridge. The chocks slid right along with the nose gear. It was only due to the quick actions of our Rep pulling the bridge back (he jumped in to replace the Agent who basically froze) that we didn't hit the darned thing. We were pushed over ten feet in a few seconds.

My manila flight from HKG to MNL was cancelled this morning yet the 9.35 from singapore with two colleagues left on time.
SQ should have cancelled in my opinion.

HKG knows typhoon. An annual occurrence.

When you see PAL, Cebu Pacific and Cathay moving their planes away from Manila or holding them at outstations, I should say it is prudent to follow their lead. What was SIA thinking about? Seriously.

Assuming the plane was originally line up on the yellow line, the plane got push quite far off the original position... Really quite surprising to see how the wind can push a 150 tons plane and move it so far (considering they must have the chocks in as well)... Anyone got the ATIS at the airport from last night? Wonder how hard the wind was blowing at the time!

I landed at 12:30AM that night. Runway 06. Wind reported by tower was 350/20, almost direct crosswind but still within aircraft limitation. I was looking at the ND spot wind on final and it was more like 40kts. Was just waiting to call a go around but true enough at threshold it was around 19kts. Just an hour after we landed the winds were already howling. I saw 3 Cebu Pacific aircraft on the ground, all getting ready for the 4AM bank of domestic flights so they can evacuate to the domestic stations before the storm was supposed to hit at 5am. There were 2 Air Asia planes also getting ready to be evacuated, with a 3rd aircraft (The Solaire logojet) being secured by maintenance with tugs around it and parked into the wind as she was AOG. I think there were around 7 or so PAL planes. The airport looked eerily empty. To be honest though, from around 2am it felt like the storm was already overhead - and it was nonstop until about 7am!
