SQ A330 - Do They Like Them?
Pardon my ignorance, I am under the impression that SQ never intend to order the A330 to their fleet but got them because of the delay in getting A380. It seems that SQ is rather happy to use them, flying regional routes, to my adopted home Taiwan, included. SQ has a lot of B772 in their fleet and now some being transferred to Scoop, their sister airlines. Given the fact that how well the A330 has been in service, it brought to my mind they should have ordered them instead of B772 and using more of their money on B773 for their long haul. Can anyone please comment on this thoughts?

It's like a A330 vs B772 thing.
777-200 has not been in the game since the introduction of A330.
All the spec tells A330 does a much better job than 772.
So it's not surprising to see SQ offload their oldest 772 to scoot in order to keep a better performance result to the mainline.

The A330-300's performance has improved dramatically since when the 77E was introduced to the SQ fleet.

Well, the first batch was part of a compensation.
However, SQ did order more A333s later, with the first of that order having been delivered already, so, I think it is safe to say that the second order proves that they are happy with them.

One only needs to take a look at a majority of the Asian carriers CX,MU,CZ,CA,KE,VN,TG, & SQ. The aircraft is perfect for regional routes and SQ have put theirs to good use as highlighted placed a top up order.

They were ordered due to 787 delays, nothing to do with the A380s being delayed. However as mentioned above they are an excellent aircraft for routes up to 9-10 hours.
They are a short term stop gap really though for SQ who have a lot of A350s on order. As such I have read that the first A333 will leave the fleet shortly even though they are still taking deliveries.

They are leased and beat on. Cabins are getting shabby.

The original 19 were on 5-year leases direct from Airbus, and the reason they got such a deal was due to A380 delays (but, probably accepted originally due to 787 delays).
Airbus shouldn't have much problems finding new customers for those frames, although, I think SQ will probably extend the lease on a few of them, maybe not all 19. I think SQ can do with more than 15 aircraft.

Dollar for dollar the A333 and 77W are arguably the best wide body aircraft ever made, currently in commercial service. What's there not to like?

SQ seem to keep their A330's out of the lime light if you know what I mean...You don't really see them appear on flagship routes which instead are operated by the 777. Also whenever SQ announce an upgrade in interiors to the aircraft, they always say that the upgrades will be appearing on new 777's and retrofitted onto the older models even though A330's are still being delivered. I have never seem the A330 mentioned in these articles so I wonder whether SQ really do consider the A330 to be a selling point for the airline therefore they are reserved for inter-Asian and less popular routes.

Domestic routes? For SQ? Really? The A330s are used in inter-Asian routes, popular or otherwise, which are exactly the routes they were intended for from day one. That's it.

I don't think any airline highlights changes to regional fleets vs flag-ship long-haul ones. SQ doesn't focus on changes to their regional 772, 77E and 773 fleet either which is aligned with the cabin of the newer A333 fleet; 2-2-2 abreast in regional business where it used to be 2-3-2 aboard the Boeings.

Yes I agree with you.
I think another reason for SQ maybe not being particularly keen on A330 is that it is used on routes also operated by their short-haul subsidiary Silk air so maybe they are keeping standards basic so that the experience between the two operators are equal and the A330 is simply used to increase capacity on these routes.
Thank you for explaining it, I clearly didn't learn as much as I could have from my work experience with SQ.

I've not flown Silk Air, is the service somehow basic? I've flown SQ regionally and noticed no change in the quality of service in Y, just less time to deliver it.

The initial batch of A330-300s were leased by Airbus to SQ as compensation for the A380 delays (Airbus gave them a very favorable lease rate).

The A330-300 is a fair bit more fuel efficient than the 777-200ER on sub-4000nm routes, but at the time, having the 777-200ER did give SQ the flexibility to use them on missions beyond the effective operating range of the A330-300 (via re-certifying them for a higher MTOW and engine thrust).

The A333's in Y are much better than 772. They are equivalent to 77W, but without the noise.
I prefer to fly the 330's and 380's on SQ.
Silkair is pretty basic, and now they are getting worse flying cramped 738's, they are the new full fare LCC in Singapore!

In Y the best options with SQ are A330 and A380 upper deck. In J the A330s are much more comfortable than A380/77W long haul seats if you are not sleeping. For sleeping, the flat bed A380/77W is much better than the wedgie sloper regional seats. The A330 when introduced received a brand new regional business class which was a big improvement over the old regional business class.
I just flew an older CX A330 and new SQ A330 in succession and I was amazed on the difference in noise inside the cabin. The SQ A330 was much quieter.

As already mentioned some were taken on 5yr leases and the first is due to leave the fleet in the coming months,
prior to the 31/5/2015 with another 5 new frames set to enter the fleet by this date.

Australia is not in Asia, but Oceania. SQ operate A333 to/from:
BNE 3 X daily
PER 3X daily
ADL 2X 5 days plus 1 X other 2 days
These routes offer significant number of passengers transiting through SIN to/from Australia. SQ maintains a high degree of market share on these routes, which are not 'less popular' just because SQ utilise A333.

A flight from Brisbane (or elsewhere in Australia) to Singapore is not an "interAsia" flight.
A flight between Asian countries constitutes an interAsia flight.

In Dec 2010, I remember flying in one of the brand new SQ A333s from SIN-CCU. They used to operate a 777 on that route before. I again flew on their A333 in Dec 2013. I love that plane- it always impresses me how quiet they are. I think SQ is happy having them in their fleet.

I can see the -200ER playing a role but it points out to some poor corporate planning on behalf of SQ.
If my memory was not lost, SQ makes a big deal about ordering 77 of 777 at a press release.
The airline which prides itself at the cutting edge of new technology does make mistake at times.
Well, having said that, no airlines is not entitle to planning mistake.

I think we need to remember that at the time the decision was made about adding more B772s or a new fleet type, fuel prices were not at the high levels that they are now, which meant it made sense for them to "abuse" the B772 on shorter hops.
In addition, the A330s of the time did not perform as well as the current models.

Totally agree with you! I will avoid MI at all cost! Even Malindo puts MI's 738 to shame really, flying with MI really makes you feel like flying on a LCC.
