Let's hope that there are some survivors but it doesn't look too hopeful.

Can't help wondering whether this is related to MH370, or to the Ukraine conflict.

This is terrible and I was stunned to hear the breaking news on the radio. They said there are "plumes of black smoke."

@Reply11: Very good point and I did not think of that. It seems like it could be a real possibility, however.

If this was mechanical, do you think this could give insight into what happened to MH370?

I do wonder what this means in terms of the big picture - over 500 people lost within 4 months on the same airline & same aircraft type - that's about as crazy as things can get...

that's the first thing that crossed my mind aswell, especially since it apparently crashed near the city of Donezk. One of the most embattled cities in the Ukraine.

At 13:26 UTC, flightradar24.com shows MH17 as just across the Russian border at 33k feet. Can't get the site to show the track of the flight, very laggy at my work computer.

A CBS aviation expert said that it could have been weather related because it is thunder storm season.

If the plane was shot down, it would make sense it would have destroyed and/or caused the shut off of the on board systems.

It certainly can. However, not with a small, hand fired antiaircraft missile one would expect the separatists may have.

Both Russia and Ukraine are both claiming it was shot down and both are blaming each other.

A Russian fighter recently shot down Ukrainian attack plane in the area - clear act of war, as the Russian fighter was operating within airspace of Russia.

Yes there are several Soviet era missile systems that can reach an aircraft at that altitude. Although I believe most are vehicle mounted or static, not the shoulder fired MANPADS that have mostly been used.

My condolences to anyone involved in this tragic incident.
I hope we get answers regarding who is responsible and find out the reasons why this many innocent people lost their lives.

Will we see airlines changing flightplans now to avoid Eastern Ukraine / Russia?

The crash is near Donetsk. That's too amazing of a coincidence to not be related to the war there.
