It appears it was previously a window.

I would say with wreckage being found so far away from the crash site and claims of a missile being fired at a military transport, but no transport reported missing. It appears the case of MH17 being shot down is getting stronger.

May all RIP.

Not if the plane that crashed was 9M-MRD, that picture clearly shows 9M-MRC.

Quoting mrcomet (Reply 195):
The fear is they will try to destroy evidence.

There's already too many pictures out there to try and cover it up. Even if the find and steal the black boxes, I doubt those would show much other than a sudden, catastrophic end to the flight.

This is simply dreadful.
Forget retribution, forget blame.
This is simply a time for deep grief, deep mourning and utter solidarity in support for the families, friends and all MAS staff touched and traumatized by this tragedy.
Let the world unite as one.

According to Dutch tourist agency D-reizen.nl, 25 Dutch people had booked a ticket on MH17.

It's not clear yet if everyone was aboard.

Good question. It doesn't appear to be on the airplane in the photos in the a.net database:

SKY News has indicated that they also saw the separatists reporting that they had shot down a cargo plane, and it was picked up by a few Russian sites/blogs. Then once word that this plane was missing came out, it was all scrubbed.

Because its a war zone, and in Ukrainian rebel held territiory. The area is subject to intense fighting with 300+ Ukrainian soliders killed in recent days, plus uncounted civilians. The rebels have already shot down a number of aircraft and are, alledgedly, being supplied with modern weapons and mercenaries by Russia.

I worry that the scene will be looted and evidence destroyed, which could be an even worse smear to the innocent people killed.

That's my point. Does any governmental / aviation related organization have the jurisdiction or access to protect and secure the debris field? Without a very rapid sealing off of the debris site, there's a risk that vital components may be removed.

Wow this is shocking. And for it to happen to MH and a 777 again as well. Just wow. Right now everything points to a shoot down with the location and the wreckage. If it was shot down intelligence and satellite should hopefully be able to figure out who and how.

Horrible News.

I don't know the capabilities of that particular missile system but once the missile's seaker starts looking for the target there is no guarantee which target it's going to pick.

The Sa-11/Buk system is radar guided, so I don't believe the missiles have a seeker - I think they just fly into whatever target the radar tells them to. Not saying that the radar operators were purposely trying to shoot down this plane, just that they may have not realized they were tracking a civilian plane, and the missile just did what it was told to do by the ground set.

Question: Is NATO still flying air surveillance, signal intelligence, of the area from neighboring proximity? If so, presumably NATO has some data to shed light whether the MH airliner was shot down, from where, and what type of weapon system?

Look up the shot-down of Gary Powers with his U-2 spy plane. It was much more than 30'000 feet.

Regarding the USS Vincennes: The Iran Air flight 655 planned to climb to just 14'000 feet, because it was a short hop over the Strait of Hormuz. it was shot down at this altitude, or lower.

I'd love to know, statistically speaking, what the odds are of the last two liners going down being from the same carrier... and of the same type of aircraft?

I don't think the uniform should matter, it certainly didn't matter when Crimea was annexed. But it could still be non-Russian Ukrainian separatists, Russia wouldn't escape blame either way.

Ukraine however can't blame Russia directly because they can't win a war against Russia, while they can win the one against the separatists.

It will be interesting to see how this develops in the short term for MH, and whether passengers already booked on MH will lose their reservations and rebook themselves.

I hate being a conspiracy theory dude, but its just to coincidental that its a Malaysian 777. if indeed it was shot down to prove a point or by accident the fact that its a 777 and to top it off a Malaysian one??? Reading news on Ukrainian websites puts all the blame on Russia. Kiev government is also putting all blame on Russia.

Anyways all theory put aside very sad day indeed.

So was this plane abiding by the restrictions or not? I have a suspicion they were not.

If reports of their altitude are correct, they were abiding by the altitude restrictions.

To suspect that they were not is completely uncalled for without additional evidence - there's nothing about MH that would lead one to believe that their flight planning capabilities are not up to task, nor that their pilots are not conscientious of such restrictions or would not follow them.

I don't know the capabilities of that particular missile system but once the missile's seaker starts looking for the target there is no guarantee which target it's going to pick. This scenario makes the most sense to me.

I agree. It has happened before involving Ukraine!

The missile firing was apparently part of a defense exercise.

Has this happened before? I remember something, but cannot be sure...
