I can't help but wonder if Malaysians grey underbelly paint scheme provoked this case of mistaken identity, since Ukrainian AN-26s are also painted dark grey as well.

Buk missiles can shoot down aircraft at altitudes up to 25000 m, well above the service ceiling for any commercial airliner.

Looks like they had a Buk. I doubt the Ukrainians did it and the Russians certainly didn't want this to happen. So likely a trigger finger separatist with a poor command and control structure and limited skills at their disposal.

Aircraft routes vary day by day depending on a huge number of factors. Look at for example the EK Flight from JFK-DXB- some nights it routes over Norway, others the UK and on a couple of rare occasions over BCN. Just because for the last couple of days it has flown a certain route does not mean it was off course today!

Afghanistan was a no-fly zone for some time. Also, the Taliban seem to have been not nearly as well equipped as the conflicting factions in Ukraine.

Very good point although from the naked eye from the ground to 33,000 feet the color of the underbelly won't make any difference I think.

Pictures coming in and the coverage all points to a mid-air incident as the debris field seems to be scattered over a large area with large pieces of the aircraft intact. Hopefully the black boxes are intact and they are able to figure out what happened very quickly.

Well, let's not start a war to kill tens of thousands over a mistake. If they were claiming responsibility for purposely shooting down a passenger airplane that would be a different thing entirely. The U.S. has shot down a commercial airplane with hundreds of passengers mistakenly as well.

The tail looks to be in a different location (as per twitter), if the SAM took out the empennage, caused it to seperate, then the rest of the fuselage and wings, fuel, ect would not necessarily ignite until impact with the ground.

We are talking about 6 miles from the ground. It's really hard to tell, unless you're a trained operator, which the rebels are not. I suspect they were too stupid to realize that civilian airliners were going through the area.

Something I find really fishy though is the claim by the rebels that they were targeting an AN-26, which is a turboprop and has a flight ceiling of only 7500m. How does someone mistake a massive commercial jetliner at 10,000m for a prop that would be going lower and slower, especially since the rebels already claim to have shot down several Ukranian -26s?

I would think that a missile does not have to actually impact the plane and blow a piece of it off, but rather just blowing near it, putting shrapnel in it, bending or disabling control surfaces, etc., could cripple the plane to the point where it is difficult or impossible to fly.

And we all know that it will be used politically. We disagree in many things.
However, I very much hope that President Obama will not order troops on the ground in Ukraine.

From videos I've seen of air-to-air combat, not all direct missile hits cause a massive fireball. Some just blow through the aircraft and punch the frame/wings to pieces damaging enough to cause the aircraft to go down. It doesn't always have to go down in flames.

This is terrible.
