Embraer's New Winglets
So I finally came across Skywests new E-175 and I got a close up of the new winglet, it is my opinion that it does not look good what so ever, I prefer the old winglets. Does anyone else agree?

I actually had to see the old and new winglet next to one another at ORD to notice the difference. I would say the newer one looks nicer in my opinion.

IMHO the new winglets look ugly as fcuk! But if they do what they are supposed to and reduce fuel burn then so be it. For those that fly the E175, will this allow you to cruise faster than M.74?

Compass is always planned M76 while SkyWest was initially planned M80, they will now be using cost index speed which takes into account block time, crew legality, fuel burn, etc...Of course, the crew flies it as fast or as slow as they feel like regardless.

I've seen the new winglets on an American Eagle E175
I think they look great...they are raked out a lot more than the original winglet and are quite a lot bigger

Well they aren't the best looking winglets (well at least from the side) but you cant argue with a 6.4% fuel burn improvement.

I like the winglets themselves. They just don't fit the Embraer E-jets relatively cute appearance very well.
The linked FG article didn't specifiy.. is the 6.4% fuel burn improvement coming from just the new wingtips, or some additional PIPs? If not, that's a huge improvement!

Am I seeing that they are more angular and not as "blended?" More 747-400 vs 757 style?

I could not agree more. Is there a benefit of them being tilted up instead of just extended win (like 787). It seems like it would not be much more of a wingspan than what it is now.

Not as ugly as the Scrimitar winglets on 737 look to me, but that is the future, so I better get used to it. It will be interesting to see how Gemini Jets and other model companies update these things.

I've ground handled a number of the American Eagle-painted Republic aircraft with these winglets (N426-N430YZ, 425 may have them too but can't remember). While pushing back one of these aircraft last week I commented about the winglets to the flight crew; the captain said he gave these new -175 the nickname "pterodactyls."
Additionally (at least on the newest Republic aircraft) these more recent Embraers are equipped with LED's for both the anti-collision beacons and wingtip strobes. Gives them quite an interesting look at night.
Those winglets really look BIG when seeing them up close.

i just flew N428YX an AA E170 with the new winglets from ORD-ATL on July 13. I also flew last night on two US E170s from ATL-PHL-SYR and i thought the original ones on the US E170 looked better then the new ones on the AA 170

I like them, at least in this shot above. Although, they are distracting.

I know they are capable of higher speeds, I just notice that they always seem to be doing .74 or less. I was wondering if these new winglets mitigated the fuel burn issue sufficiently to allow those operators to fly a bit faster.
