KLM's Last MD11 Flight

Mon Jul 21, 2014 1:08 pm

The end of scheduled operations with KLM is fast approaching with the end coming at the end of the summer season in October. Soooo, has anyone heard whether there is a possibility of KLM doing a Farewell flight for enthusiasts like BA did for the B757, Monarch did for the A300 and Bangladesh did for the DC10?

I don't really fancy Montreal or Toronto this year but needs before wants

I suffered a rather incredulous Canadian immigration agent, a hotel (which was fine itself) in the most run down place I've ever stayed in and $14 pints in Dorval itself to get one this year; its not quite the nicest experience but it could be a lot worse!

Latest MD11 news according the Dutch forum "Scramble, 't Praethuys, KLM" :

- KCA will stop commercial flying per September 1st, aircraft to be ferried to the USA by late September
- KCE will stop commercial flying in the last weekend of October, aircraft to be ferried to the USA by late November
- KCB will stop commercial flying in the last weekend of October: ferry to USA around late 2014
- KCD will stop commercial flying in the last weekend of October: ferry to USA around late 2014

KCB and/or KCD might be used in November for some special events around the end of the MD11-era and the end of the Douglas-era (80 years!) within KLM.
No details are known yet about these special events.

Something as simple as a LHR-AMS rotation announced and sold in advance would be perfect.

wow, I'm cutting it close. I'm flying AMS-YYZ on Sept 6th, scheduled MD-11 service. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, hoping to avoid a tech sub.

Any idea as to the dispatch rates of the MD-11 fleet?

I'm pretty sure they will. This is quite an important retirement as KLM is the last operator of the passenger MD-11. I believe this would also mark the last passenger trijet in service (not counting the Tu-154).

Will the planes be scrapped or is there enough life left for a freighter conversion? I guess they have so many hours it is over?

We've currently got 727 service in GVA (J-only) but I suspect it will be gone before the '11.

Not to forget the Yak-40 and Yak-42 and 727!

It would be fantastic to have a KLM MD-11 farewell flight but I honestly don't see it happen. It's not like KLM at all to organize something like this. More likely a bunch of directors and VIP's that don't give anything about aviation get invited for a flight around Amsterdam.

I heard they will send the MD-11 to ORD at least once more before the end despite the fact that the route is a 747. Does anybody know if this is true?

Weren't they planning on doing some sort of commemorative book? I can't seem to be able to find reference to it anywhere although I know for sure I saw something about it posted here at one point.

Have looked at getting on the last flight YUL-AMS on 25OCT14, but as the day is a Saturday, if you are only going for a few days without a Saturday stay, the ticket prices are horrendous.

The end of an era. We still have the cargo MD-11s but for how long? And I suppose these last passenger MD-11s will be parted out since I don't think anyone is doing cargo conversions of the type these days.

I got to fly DC-10s several times, but never the MD-11. I almost got to fly on an AA example MIA-EZE but they changed to 777s like a week before my trip.

I love the MD-11. Just this past Friday I flew to YYZ for a session of spotting. To my "luck", I arrived by the popular spotting place just as the KLM MD-11 was passing over Airport Road landing on runway 23. I didn't have my camera out (besides, I was driving). I did get a chance to enjoy it in all its beauty.

I will always cherish my memories flying the MD-11 from YYZ to HEL in 1999 aboard Finnair. I remember seeing the "Moomin" AY MD-11. Such a great plane and great paint job. Now Finnair, like the rest of them went to the "boring" A330...

... I do like the A330, but the Tri-jet is something else! Maybe one day I'll get to fly it for Eva Air, even though it's in "F" version only...

yes, it is due out in October. Please note, however, for those of you who don't speak Dutch, you will only have to look at the pretty pictures.. as the entire book, minus the cover, is written in Dutch. Also, for those living in the US or Canada, the shipping cost is 26 euros.

I'm glad I had the chance to fly on a few MD-11s -- KLM, Swissair, JAL, Delta and City Bird (operating for Sabena BRU-YUL in SN livery).

One of the best things about the MD-11 (and DC-10) was the big windows, probably about the same size as those on the 787.

No, actually, far from it. I'd compare 777 windows to the MD11, 787 size is in a class of its own. MD11's cockpit windows are gigantic though.

I'm glad KLM has YUL and YYZ as the last two destinations. I, however, never understood why that was.

Can't wait till mid September, here at YYZ we have our annual Street Festival. KLM every year parks their first flight of the day (6 hour turn around so why not) at the event on static display, and joins in on the festivities. Last year was the MD11, and this year for the 2nd and last time it'll be the MD11 again.

I'm really hoping to be on the last one out of YYZ on Oct 25, 2nd last flight in the world...

Cheers

In any case, the DC-10 and MD-11 windows are about 25% larger than those on the L-1011 and also larger than the windows on the 747.

I'm hoping they'll do something like AMS-LHR, CDG or similar, KLM is usually good at that kind if thing, I just hope if they do something they don't charge ridiculous one way fares like they do with the majority of their scheduled flights

The answer is simple:

- AMS-YUL and AMS-YYZ are among the shortest transatlantic routes, therefore permitting a one aircraft out-return operation on a daily basis (if necessary).
- Both stations are relatively close together, thus aiding any spare parts issues in case one aircraft goes tech.
- YUL, in particular, is a longstanding KLM MD11 station and mechanics are fully familiar with the aircraft.

KLM has four aircraft in service at present, but only three a/c from September.
Three is the absolute minimum to operate the two routes on a daily basis, with one back-up.

I don't see it happening. First these MD-11 would require a conversion, which is not worth it for an aircraft type that is slowly but surely on its way out of the sky. The last MD-11 conversion was conducted about four years ago and that aircraft was finally placed into service last year.

Also, Martinair is up for sale and last year one of their then seven MD-11(F) was removed from the fleet and taken over by Skylease and the last time I heard of it it was parked SFB.

Still regarding the MD-11F, Centurion is in the process of replacing theirs with some 744Fs.

Martinair's future has already been decided upon by AF and these plans will be made public on the 25th. There is a good chance the remaining MD11's that call AMS home will be gone soon too.

I expect another reason is that YUL and YYZ aren't the strongest premium class markets and the MD-11 has the smallest J cabin (24 seats) of all KL widebody types.

I'll be flying KLM MD-11s on Oct 9th and 15th from Montreal to Amsterdam and back. I'm using a frequent flyer award on Delta to get from RIC to YUL. The fare was quite reasonable when I booked it several months ago.

Not enough value in MD-11 conversions as noted:

That is the sad truth. The cargo market is weak and fuel prices are high. The market for used MD-11s already converted isn't there. If someone wanted a MD-11F, there are newer examples already converted that are stored:
http://www.airfleets.net/listing/md11-4.htm

This KLM example would be about the right age for conversion, but it is sad to see the fate of its siblings. Every one has "scrapped" by it after a short time as "stored."
http://www.airfleets.net/listing/md11-3.htm

If someone really wanted a MD-11F, FedEx has a number stored I'm sure they wouldn't mind selling a few more.

As per KL schedules, looks like AMS-YUL will be operated by an A332 (42 less seats than the MD11) most of the time after the retirement of the three-holer, with the odd A333 on certain days.

One more A330 operator from YUL across the pond, along with the likes of LX, LH, SS, TK, AH, FS, AC and TS.

A true testament to how the A330 has developed over the years!

My only MD11 flight was also one of the shortest regularly scheduled MD11 route: ZRH-GVA on Swissair.

Expect the A333 (292 seats) daily in S15, an increase of 7 seats per flight vs MD11 (285 seats).

lightsaber

It shows PH-KCH as scrapped in Jan 2013.

Do you know when the other 3 were cut up, (presumably 2013 for PH-KCF and PH-KCI, and 2014 for PH-KCK).

If someone really wanted a MD-11F, FedEx has a number stored I'm sure they wouldn't mind selling a few more.

Of the four FX aircraft stored listed on the link you provided, two are former WO MD-11s that were acquired as sources for spare parts. The other two may as well end as such.

Indeed, I remember when EI started trans Atlantic flights with the type in 1994. How things have changed since.

I remember waiting for my flight to ZRH at CVG back in '95 on DL . I remember being disappointed that it was on a L1011. Boy,how times have changed.
