MH Future 777s

Mon Jul 21, 2014 9:16 pm

Now that MH has lost 2 772ERs over the course of 5 months (9M-MRO and 9M-MRD)....a few questions came across my mind:

1) Will they be getting replacement 772ERs to replace them? (Assuming they survive this)
Is Boeing Even making the ER's anymore?
Or will MH have to get 772LRs or 773ERs for a short term replacement?
Or will they just let the reduction in capacity slide?

As far as I know, the 772ER's are still available for purchase.

I also assume since MH's insurance company would be assisting

with the funding, they would need to by similiar models to what they lost.

At what point does the insurance contract kick in for MH370 ? If they never find it, does the insurance company still need to pay ?

I suspect MAS would be looking for Second Hand - Insurance will just cover the value of the aircraft at the time of loss. That is of course if they own them. If they are leased then the Leaseco will be compensated by the insurer and the lease to MAS would be terminated

They can also lease an airplane, or buy one from the second hand market.

I doubt they would get new ones anyway, and used 77Es are available on the market.

I suspect that, in the short term at least, their traffic volumes will be impacted to the extent that they may not even need to replace the two aircraft

Wasn't the B777 fleet at MH destined for retirement by 2015?

Yes 777 fleet is all scheduled for retirement by end 2015 as leases end per the CEO. Posted in this thread about 744s.

I am afraid that on pretty short term MH will have to sell planess instead of buying new or used ones.

Yes, reportedly they have one (9M-MRN) that was sitting around that's being reactivated. Because they're retiring them anyway, it won't cause that big of a disruption.

Since most of MAS Long Haul is to Europe and not the Pacific Ocean to America they were looking at the A330-300 now the A330neo. They probably don't want more 777 of any type, 787 could work.

Yes.

MH370 and MH17 have just brought part of the process forward.

They obviously aren't short of 777s given that MRN has not flown for some 2 months... MH will be just fine, but as for their 777s...

What planes are they going to use to fly to AMS and FRA?
I guess the A330 can fly to Istanbul, China, Hong Kong and India which is where we still see MH operate the 772ER.

I heard rumours that they might cancel FRA so that could also solve the problem but AMS will definitely be continued and I am not sure if the A330 will have the range to fly their without a payload restriction.

Hi,

Just to clarify, the fleet was supposed to be reduced to 13 anyway by the end of the year after recent A330 deliveries. The tragic events of MH17 and MH370 sped this process up. MRN will likely be reactivated soon to cover the loss of MRD keeping the number at 13.

That's the problem. The 333HGW that will enter service next year (which MAS has not ordered any yet) definitely can't do AMS-KUL year-round, not without payload restriction.

They could lease some A380s from Amadeo

MH had said they would be sourcing a replacement for the 777 this year. But I don't think this would be one of their priorities at the moment with their future in uncertainty so maybe they will lease a few similar models. But I know that there is a 744 which was taken out of storage to cover for A380 wing fix and it was only being used on stand by so this may be used for the time being.

AMS => 777 (we had an 747 some years ago)
FRA => A380

The A330-300 won't be able to reach AMS, not sure what they will put on that route.

There's also some talk about EK moving on some of its older 77A and 77E which might be an option if they need one short-term. Although as has been said above with their current outlook maybe they'll just cut their losses and not worry about plugging this particular gap?

Still available but I doubt any more will be built. The last one was delivered exactly a year ago (July 26, 2013) to Asiana and the last order was 5 years ago. Boeing shows 422 orders and 422 delivered.

Doesn't SQ have 1 or 2 772ERs leaving their fleet this year that they could buy or lease?

Good to hear MRN will be flying again - not to make up for the loss or under these circumstances - but I have fond memories of several flights on MRN.
