TransAsia Airways ATR-72 Crashed In Taiwan

A TransAsia Airways ATR-72 crashed in Taiwan.
It has been reported that there were 58 passengers onboard.
No further details has been reported.

Early reports are coming in of a crash involving an ATR-72 operated by Transasia Airlines in Taiwan. The accident happened on PenHu which is part of the Pescadores group of Islands. The aircraft appears to have crashed while attempting to land. The ATR-72 has crashed into residential buildings, resulting in a hull loss and fire. 8 people are currently accounted for, and it appears that 48 passengers and crew have perished.
It is worth noting that a typhoon has passed through the region within the past 12 hours.

This is the second TNA ATR they've lost in the Penghu region.

They suffered an ATR72 Cargo loss there due to severe icing about 10 years ago.

Yes, the last years were amazing. One could have hoped this was the result of better airplanes, better training, better infrastructure (and it certainly is), and this year, at least two crashes (MH) were special events, but still, its a shame this year is doing so badly.

I'd like to point out that Typhoon Matmo was crossing the Island of Taiwan from South to North today. It has made landfall on the Southern coast of China a few hours ago, and the weather in the Taiwan strait, especially at low levels, was pretty dire.

There is absolutely no indication that this accident is linked to the bad weather at this stage, however.

If the weather conditions were within the operational parameters of the aircraft, it's not "linked to bad weather." Looking at CXs flight status out of TPE for today, there were some cancellations and delays in the AM, followed by mostly on time departures after that. Having flown in and out of TPE/KHH in all manner of storms, usually it's only a few hours where flying is unsafe.

Now, on the other hand I don't know what the local conditions were at Magong airport at that time; if the weather was not safe for landing, then the pilots shouldn't have attempted it. But just having a typhoon in the area is not a reason to stop all flights.

Taiwan radar at the time of the accident shows a heavy rainband from the typhoon over the field.

The last one is certainly not a "crash" (even though they could have avoided the region), but MH370 could be just another AF447, nothing "special" about it.

They were NOT operating in the middle of a typhoon.

The middle of the typhoon was over 150 miles away from the crash site.

The strongest winds I can see reported for the crash airport were 23 kts with gusts to 32 kts.

Like most other falsely called "typhoon crashes" this one is likely more visibility related due to heavy rains.

From the data I can find Magong Air Base (MZG/ RCQC) does not have an ILS system.

For what it's worth, although Magong Airport's website is rather slow and clunky right now, it looks like planes were landing there after 3 PM local time, including ATR 72s. (GE 511 from TSA landed 15 minutes late at 15:35 local time.) The storm would have been moving away from Taiwan by then.

Now, with Typhoons, even when the storm moves away, there may be localized heavy rains, but that's not necessarily a reason not to set out, but rather a reason to hold, go-around, or divert for more fuel.

It seems like Asian airlines love operating in typhoon's. SQ006 in TPE, CI642 in HKG, and several others. If they want to operate in bad weather, more power to them, but they should at least make sure travelers are aware of the risks, and allow them to take other flights. I don't want to say that bad weather was the cause of the crash, but I would guess that it will not be left out of the report.

None of those flights, nor this one, were "operating in typhoon's".

The flights were all far from the typhoon, but receiving some of the remnants of the storm as rain and slightly higher than normal winds. Just as flights do in the US when hurricanes pass various airports, and in most of the world after storms pass.

As noted above - today another ATR landed safely without difficulty before the crash at this airport.

Those other flights were not the only ones operating from those airports either.

I'm certain weather and limited visibility contributed to today's crash, but it wasn't a death flight certain to crash.

Some eye witnesses are saying the plane "slammed to the ground" from about 300 ft after attempting to go around. Poor visibility due to heavy rains seemed to have been an issue. Details change with every news report so no idea if that's true or not.

They are calling for Penghu residents to donate blood as there's not enough in storage.

FAIK , The other two flights only had crew onboard (who did not survive). One was a repositioning flight that mistook a road in Taoyuan for a runway, while landing VFR into Taipei Sungshan airport and the other was on a cargo flight that encountered icing over the Taiwan straits near Penghu and crashed into the sea.

ATR had previously had icing problems with their planes.
